Sooo, I'm writing a romantasy, and so far, I have 265 pages... It's going pretty well...
Does this line land flat??
The words don’t really feel real to me. That word wasn’t something people used to describe me. I wasn’t magnificent to anyone. I was just a princess with some useless powers. That’s what they all thought.

“What the saints!?” James’ jagged shout was behind me. I had forgotten about him. He was staring open-mouthed, horrified, at the beast. His mouth opened and closed, as if he couldn’t find the courage or the words to speak.
“Help me,” I gasped, clutching my chest. I was choking and spluttering and breaking.

I couldn’t see her like this. I couldn’t bear to be even halfway okay while she wasn’t.
It all seemed to happen in slow motion. The sails came rushing down. To where she was lying. They were going to hit her.
It would kill her.
No. No, it wouldn’t kill her. When I made the decision to live earlier, I may not have consciously known it then, but I made that decision for both of us. If I live, she lives. If I die, she better not die with me.

She looked put out for a moment, deprived of her gossip, but then her face lit up, and she seemed to have another satisfactory conversation idea.
“Well,” she clapped her hands once. “James has been talking about you quite a lot.” She grinned deviously.
