it is so annoying how people claim powerless is just a red queen copycat because having a girl with no powers in a world of superhumans is just a common trope and not a stolen plot. people act like victoria aveyard invented the special girl in a royal court vibe but mare is a literal lightning weapon while paedyn is just using her wits to survive which makes the stories totally different. no hate to any of the authors because they both built amazing worlds we love but it is totally possible for books to share a similar vibe without one being a rip-off.
plus it is so hypocritical for red queen fans to come for lauren roberts when red queen itself took so much inspiration from red rising like the whole color-coded society and the reds being oppressed by silvers with god-like powers. if we are going to play the copying game then almost every ya series is just a remix of hunger games or x-men so attacking powerless specifically feels like people are just being haters. victoria aveyard and lauren roberts are both super talented and it is clear they both put their hearts into these stories for the fans to enjoy.
at the end of the day authors always build on tropes that came before them and just because two books have a royal trial or secret identity doesnt mean it is a crime. powerless focuses way more on the romance and banter while red queen is a heavy political war story so they dont even feel the same when you are actually reading them. we should just celebrate having so many cool books to read instead of starting wars because every story is inspired by something else and both authors deserve respect for their hard work.

The thing about that tho, if you compare the plots in general they are almost the exact same.
Poor girl theiving for her family in a two sided world with the magical and non magical, accidentally steals from hot mysterious stranger, gets chosen for annual murder games (lowkey like the Hunger Games), learns the mysterious stranger is actually a prince, then meets the softer, kinder bother, dances, love triangle, the Resistance the Red whatever (idk what the Red Queen one is), evil king/father, dead fmc father, etc. They are just so, so, so similar. And yes, Powerless is good for beginners. But when you start to read more books, like Red Queen, Hunger Games, The Selection, you start to see a LOT of questionable similarites. And YESSSSS, all boooks are similar in some way or another, but Powerless just takes it to another level.
