"If he is not the Word of God God never spoke". I'm still not able to articulate the way this quote guts me. It’s the Catholic school memory of “the Word incarnate” that comes back to mind while the boy attempts to save regardless of what it costs. The word without application is empty preaching that even the boy can see through. Love is practice, and to practice it indiscriminately is a profoundly beautiful risk.
The two remind me of the ascetics of the desert, isolated and in deprivation. The boy, living or dying for the sake of his father’s hope and will, carries his fire like a cross. I had never imagined life as martyrdom, but maybe what we’re willing to live for has the same gravity as what we find worthy of our death. It strikes me that there is any reverence to capitalize both the Word and God and I did double check. The way The Man clings to something like that despite himself confuses me. Maybe its just awe for the Boy.

Instead, God is the love in the eyes of a friend or the sanctity in the compassion of a child if we’re going by McCarthy. I don’t judge the man’s loss of good will or his inability to risk an oblivion without the boy. I never understood Abraham’s faith in God to sacrifice his son. We trust and we hesitate. We pray when we don’t believe. We try knowing we’re incapable. We find divinity in odd places and commit to them beyond rationality.
