Theresa | 17284 comments Those of us who are fond of studly dog reads - a/k/a K-9-special forces-military romantic suspense/thrillers - have lost one of our authors this month. I believe Sue and Olivermagnus have read her work, others may have as well.

Piper J. Drake was one of the pseudonyms for Lalana Dararutana under which she wrote studly dog series, including her True Heroes series. Her dogs were always the best part of her books, even when plots fell short or were rushed.

She lost her long battle with cervical cancer on May 18th. Here's a beautiful obituary posted on her public Facebook author page:
https://www.facebook.com/AuthorPiperJ....

I discovered I have at least one from the True Heroes series that I don't seem to have read yet. It's moved onto my nightstand, intention being to read it in the next few weeks as a memorial to her.

Studly dogs everywhere are mourning her. As is clear from her obituary, she loved animals, owned many dogs through her life which for sure provided models for her books.

Booknblues | 13287 comments One I had meant to post was Alan Bradley who wrote The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and the whole Flavia de Luce series.

He was 88.

Oh, I hadn't realized this! :-(

How sad. I just saw his final book is expected out in November.

She looks so young. I love any Studly Dog series.

She was 49. Way too young.

Theresa | 17284 comments I just changed the title of this thread to generic Author Passings. Unfortunately this is a necessary thread to have.

Latest sad news: Marjane Satrapi.

I am very sad to hear this news. Her Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood was one of the first graphic novels I ever read, and I went on to read more of her work, Embroideries being one of my favorites. In fact, it was her graphic novels that led me down a rabbit hole reading more books authored by women and set in Iran, the Middle East or addressing the diasphora, which continues to this day.

She was only 56. Here's a great article from the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g...

Oh, wow! I was going to comment that I didn't think she was much older than I. She wasn't.

Persepolis was also the first graphic novel I read. I loved it. Except for the sequel, I haven't read others by her. I should at least take a look at Embroideries.
