Hello everyone. I will be starting this book over the weekend.

Hi Jill and Lorraine, thank you so much for joining me in this buddy read. This will be a re-read for me. I stumbled upon this book in our library bus during the pandemic, and it felt to fatally timed and eerie to read it. I'm quite curious how it will feel reading it now that we're luckily behind those sickly times. I really loved the book, the characters and the writing, so much so that after reading the library book I bought a copy for myself. I'll be starting as soon as I finish my current reads (I'm a bit behind on my planned books).

I read The Sea of Tranquility in 2025 and really enjoyed it, so that prompted me to join this buddy read. I'd also heard great things about Station Eleven, especially since it was nominated for—and won—so many awards.

I've finished the first three chapters, (view spoiler)[ although I'm not hooked yet, I do find it quite interesting. I like that the author doesn't waste any time and quickly immerses us in the pandemic. Now I'm curious to see how humanity will cope with it and what kind of world will emerge afterward. I've finished another three parts of the book. (view spoiler)[ I find the constant jumping back and forth in time really interesting. We get to see both the day everything began and what life looks like much later.
It's incredible how quickly civilization collapses. It makes me wonder what scientists think would actually happen if we experienced a pandemic on that scale. Would electricity, the internet, and gasoline really disappear that fast? And what about artificial intelligence? Would it find a way to survive—and perhaps even help humanity? (hide spoiler)]

Hi all, I've started reading it. Not that far into the book yet though. I agree with you, Lorraine, that it's quite surprising how the author portrayed the (view spoiler)[ decline of all civilisation to be such a fast process. I feel like we've seen already from the actual history of how incredibly resilient humans are and how things go back to (a changed) normal after a while, and so it makes me wonder why the people who survived the pandemic in the book, at least the adult generations, not the kids, why wouldn't they have picked the pieces back up and return the internet, electricity etc? (hide spoiler)] I'm not enjoying the whole (view spoiler)[ prophet (hide spoiler)] subplot of the story, and I remember kind of not liking that part the first time I read the book either. In general, all kinds of (view spoiler)[ falls prophets and manipulative, narcissistic and just plain bad people (in real life) make me really weary about this world, and so even in the books I can get sensitive about them, if they're well convincingly written. (view spoiler)[ Overall, I did like the story, even though, like you, LinaVer, I could have done without the prophet part. That said, it does make sense to me that vulnerable people would want to find an explanation for the pandemic, and that some of them would turn to religion. Unfortunately, without any boundaries, religious thinking can easily become something more like a sect.
I did like the ending, especially the way the author brings all the characters back together and lets us find out what happened to them.
Finally, I also agree with you, LinaVer, that it is somewhat surprising that, since some adults survived and brought their knowledge with them, so many of the survivors seem to have been reduced to only the most basic necessities. But there is hope! (hide spoiler)]
