How do we want to do this? Own pace or so much of the book per week?

I'd say own pace, I could never do x per week, it'd be stressful for slower people and a limit for faster one

Has anyone read other Harrison books?

First one for me!
It's funny cause I had this one in my read list as the book to try out this author with, since it was her most interesting one for me.

I've read Cackle and Such Sharp Teeth. Liked them both.

I've read Cackle. Really liked it! That's what made me want to read more of her books. I've got Play Nice on tbr.

I've actually ended up starting early, yesterday morning, cause of my read before this turning into a DNF and the next try the same, so I just moved on to this.
I hope I don't finish too soon, cause so far I really like it and it's a very fast read.

At pg 38... this does read fast.

A baseball game came on and I stopped reading to watch it. But the way the game is going... I wish I'd kept reading. :(

Without spoilers, I really like how slowly it builds up, too often recently I read books that start very strong and then decline, build down instead of up.

I just changed it's status on my books. Since I finished a group read book yesterday I'm ready to start a new one. I generally keep 3-4 going at a time. Sometimes more.

Well that was an eventful first chapter!

I'm a multi-reader so I always start a new book with just one chapter, to settle into the world. Then after that I read as much as I want or have time for.

This one did a good job of shaking the fmc out of her current situation and raised a LOT of questions. I'm very intrigued.

Maybe she has a good reason for being this way, but Vesper is so damn whiny. Hard to feel much sympathy for her.

Yeah, I disliked her from the start, right off the bat people don't seem like her and I can't even blame them for once. Indeed makes it harder to empathise.
I had something similar with Come Closer, I really disliked the protagonist so it was hard to feel bad for her.
Especially self-centered characters who wouldn't care about someone else's suffering.

Finished. It's a fast read. The story gets a bit repetitive with Vesper always complaining, with good cause as it turns out, about her mother and her family.

How many of us have passed Chapter three? Significant information in that one that I wouldn't want to spoil, but if we've all passed it, I can ask how others reacted to it.

I finished it days ago already, and now I forgot which was chapter 3.
If it's the one I think, I was really surprised and didn't see it coming, I had to re-read it a few times to be sure. And I had a whole phase of (view spoiler)[ hold on, is Hail Satan normally in Christian prayers? Is there such a thing from maybe certain Christian groups, since you gotta recognise Satan to recognise the Christian god? (hide spoiler)]. It took me a while to understand the truth!

Yes, that's the one. Brings a whole shift in perspective.

That was the chapter I realized why there were so many references to (view spoiler)[heat and fire. (hide spoiler)]

I missed that connection. I may have to re-read to see all the clues.

I've finished now though. Found it an enjoyable read, though I agree Vesper is far too whiney.

Rachel Harrison does get some weird but original ideas for her books. I'm going to have to read more of them.

I was reading a chapter a day up until a week ago, and simply forgot about it. I don't mean to spin any negativity at this time but will say from what I've read, Rachel Harrison has to be a pseudonym for Stephen King, lol. There's way too much padding and repetitiveness to think otherwise, lol.

Joking aside, I just checked my e-reader and says I'm at 70%. I'll try to finish sometime this evening or the next.

He could be one of her influences, just guessing.
