Am I missing context?

I came into this book from a fairly blind perspective. I was aware that Hooks is considered to be a crucial feminist author who is also queer and black and I was interested in reading a book from that perspective since I'm from a different background. I was super surprised that the religious overtones sounded more similar to my Catholic upbringing than what I expected from someone who (from my research) considered themselves a Buddhist.

Personally, I feel like I didn't pick up much from this book beyond a few really nice quotes. Which leads me to the question:

Am I missing some historical context that makes this work more meaningful than I found it on the first reading? I admit I'm typically a little more scientific focused and this strikes more as a meditation, but I was really hoping for more.

Thoughts?

As a Black woman, freshly stepping into adulthood, a huge takeaway for me was perspective and how different perspectives shape our understanding of love. This is 100% opinion-based, but maybe try looking at it through that lens rather than historical, research & literal context. It is both beautiful and disheartening that we live in a world where some know love from birth and some learn it through hardship. Where some read this and realize they've never known love without abuse, and where some didn't know that was a reality. Because of our own experiences, we go into love and relationships (hoping for fulfillment and validation somehow or another) carrying these perspectives, blind to these alternative understandings of love. In most cases, this puts us in a situation where we are playing a game we never knew the rules to, ultimately hurting everyone involved. I think that Hooks wants us to take these different points of view, experiences, and understandings, and come together to define not only what love has meant to us in the past, but what it can grow to be to prevent this disconnect both platonically and romantically.
