This was exceedingly predictable and stereotypical in terms of plot, characters and setting.

But it was also a whole load of fun!

Just a shame about the audio narrator. I think I'll get the rest of the series in paper format so I don't get more migraines!

Judith (brownie72011) | 1381 comments I wish I hadn't picked up the entire series on audible on a 2:1 or whatever sale because I'm not a huge fan of the narrator either. But it's not impacting me to the same degree as you Sammy. still though.

I did enjoy the ride and am looking forward to seeing where the author takes things next!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 5396 comments Yeah, it's one of my migraine triggers I'm very aware of, and I'm normally quite diligent about listening to the samples of female narrators in particular, but this time it slipped my mind. Typical.

Jenny | 3009 comments Am I the only one here who read this series before the Leviathan series?
I read this when it came out, and I found it to be one of the more refreshing fantasy novels that I had read at that point. I mean new-ish fantasy. A lot of the stuff I had read was geared intentionally or not to a YA audience, it seemed, and this one felt more mature. Not entirely original or anything, but with characters that had some depth and a world that definitely kept my interest.
It holds up well on a reread too.

I do think the Leviathan books are better, or maybe just weirder, and therefore interesting to my twisted brain, but I stand by my original 5 star rating for this one.

I only read this and the Leviathan ones because they were BOMs. But I really like the others, and am liking this one too. This one seems more fun than the other series, but I may like the other series more. Lol

Jenny | 3009 comments I just stopped at the bookstore to get the new Leviathan book, and the new Apprentice to the Villain book. Some fun reading in my future.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 5396 comments yeah, it's my first by him. But I may well try the rest also.

but probably not in audio!
