also it would be insanely good if the criminial in question did crazy things to save the other character

I’m also interested in recommendations! In terms of shows killing eve is absolutely incredible if you haven’t seen it, the books it’s based on are okay.
Other recs that fit the description or are kind of a similar idea-
They never learn- Layne Fargo
Affinity- Sarah waters (similar kinda vibe is also fingersmith by Sarah waters which is an incredible read anyway)
The nightingale and the rose- jolie dvorak- I didn’t love the writing of this one but it might be someone else’s cup of tea and for sure fits the description!
And I’ve also heard good things about requiem for immortals- lee winter, which is on my tbr
