I am Mel, long-time participant and devotee of NBRC Challenges and a newly-minted Mod. 😊

I am from Hungary, living in a small lakeside town not too far from Budapest with my husband and 12-yo-son.

Together with Karen and Lavender, I will be captaining for this adventure.

I’m happy to see familiar faces and also looking forward to getting to know all of you I haven't played with before. 😊

📕Have you read any books by Michael J. Sullivan ?

Yes. I read my first one in 2016 when I received it from NetGalley and I fell in love with his writing, but also how he writes the series in advance so you know when you start there is always an end and you know when the books will be released.
So I started with which is The Legends of the First Empire series and then in 2017 I devoured The Riyria Revelations series, in 2018 The Riyria Chronicles, and then it wasn't until 2023 I went back to The Legends of the First Empire series and finished it only this year! haha

I have ready to go and also to start The Rise and Fall series. I'd like to read these two in wheelathon.

When we were contacted by MJS in this group ( some spammer was posing as us and he wanted to double check!) it had me, Judith and Sophie a bit excited and so this theme was born for wheelathon :)

🏰 What’s your stance on Fantasy and its various offspring?

I read quite a bit. I always thought of it as High Fantasy/masculine/very 1990s but over the years I've read awesome books and I've even read some in that High Fantasy genre now which I have liked.

🧙 Do you have a favourite fantasy series or author?
That is a tough one. Honestly, MJS and Brandon Sanderson are probably the two up there for me. Then we start going into sub genres with SJ Maas and Ilona Andrews and Jim Butcher who I always read too

Hadrian and Royce are up there (keeping to the MJS theme!) but there are honestly so many. I'm not sure I can pick.

Just because we recently finished it, Princess Donut!

I do prefer a hero

I don't think so. As the books I love I re-read and have a different experience each time. Never disappointed.

I do paint by numbers on canvas that are all over my house and office, and I have done many mosaics, although not for a while!
I also love travelling and in less than 4 weeks we are headed to Japan 💃

Im laura, I live in Greece, kefalonia. I also see a few faces that we may have played together before. And Mel has and always will be my favourite Uno captain.

I haven't read any books by MJ sullivan. Maybe I can do an audio book during the challenge and see, hmmm.....

I am a Romantasy girlie... throne of glass was the series to give me the wow factor.... also loved Direbound I read last year, so my magical companion is a Direwolf!!!

I am British, so my sense of humour is very dry... im going to say sarcasm it may be the lowest form of wit, but it packs a punch if delivered right. But I will use my handbag in a physical fight it has a nice long strap for swing and a variety of books creams and kids' toys and other general crap for impact.

I love a morally grey (fictional man). i think if my husband growled at me, I might get him tested.

Harry Potter for the friendship and memory wipe....

At the moment, i love book journaling and cross stitching bookmarks. But im a mummy to two incredible little boys 9 and 11. My 9 year old is autistic and my 11 year old is an old soul

Can't wait to play. I will get my shelf sorted tomorrow. I hope...

Ooh that's a hard one. But Royce and Hadrian from Riyria are actually a pretty f great duo so I'll just go with that.

If I lived in a high-fantasy world I would say magical wolf, but if it's a fantasy creature somehow living in my REAL world I think I'd go with self-sustaining genius large shaggy dog who doesn't need to be fed or do potty. If I had one of those I could actually, well, have a dog.

Morally grey absolute disasters. Like, apart from reading, this summer has been the summer of House of the Dragon Season 3, and The Vampire Lestat (aka Interview with the Vampire Season 3). Give me Targaryens and give me Lestat, and I am FED.

No, but I’ve had Theft of Swords waiting patiently on my Kobo for years, so maybe this is the impetus I need to pick it up 😀.

🏰 What’s your stance on Fantasy and its various offspring? I love fantasy, primarily epic fantasy/grimdark, although I don’t mind the occasional cozy fantasy or a great standalone (The Poet Empress I’m looking at you).

Joe Abercrombie! I’ve read (actually listened because Steven Pacey is an extraordinary narrator) most of his books and will continue to read everything he writes. I also enjoy Brandon Sanderson and Robin Hobb, but I still have a way to go through both their backlists.

The Red Rising series 😁. Most recently, I’d love to relive the second half of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, which turned my whole experience of that book from ☹️ to 🥰 in the very best way.

I hate Fantasy and am mainly a crime/mystery reader. I have read some fantasy for other challenges but don't really like any of them apart from the Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl series. I don't think I will be much good with any fantasy books as I am trying to avoid them unless I really have to.

I have become involved in speed puzzling just recently and have just returned from a social competition event. I will be attending a puzzle retreat in November. I am retired now and most of my time is spent looking after my two grandsons aged 3 and 1 and my oldest daughter is expecting another baby in November.

I also love doing puzzles, but couldn't do them fast to save my life.

I was delighted to get a 1000-piecer this January from my best friend called "The World of Jane Austen". Took me 3 months, but did it eventually.

Now I'm contemplating getting another puzzle from the series, but with an Agatha Christie theme this time. ;))

Appointment accepted! I'm sure I remember some books better than others and don't like them all equally. But will help however I can.

One of my main tips -- and considered a pretty universal truth in the fandom -- is that the audiobooks are a must. Riyria is the rare case where the audio narration (by Tim Gerard Reynolds) enhances the experience so much that it's arguably superior to just traditional reading-reading.

Awesome. This Challenge made me remember that I have had The Crown Tower languishing on my physical bookshelf for 10 years ... oops.

I'm definitely planning on reading it for the challenge and if I like it, I will consider buying a next book on audio.

I'm a Lord of the Rings Gal through and through and has also been a fan of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, though the latter made me deeply suspicious of long-lasting High/Epic Fantasy series taking forever to conclude. I tend to avoid them nowadays.
From time to time I'm venturing to other subgenres, like Cosy Fantasy & Sword-and sourcery.

TERRY PRATCHETT & DISCWORLD, first and foremost, Sam Vimes is the fictional Love of My Life and my Chosen Literary Husband.🥰
I also love Sharon Shinn's The Twelve Houses & Elemental Blessings series.
And Ilona Andrews Innkeeper and Hidden Legacy series (I was sorry to find that I was less than impressed by Maggie. It was OK, but bordering on MEH for me.)

I can understand not loving Maggie, the info dumping in the first 40% was crazy, I nearly gave up on the book. Thankfully for me it changed course in such a way that I absolutely loved, so ended up a fave. But goodness it was a struggle at times.

I wholeheartedly agree with that! Though I think I'm just not a big fan of Ilona Andrews romances to begin with. I didn't like Kate and Curran even though I really enjoyed the series otherwise.

LOL, what a relief.

I arrived at reading IA by starting with Innkeeper & Hidden Legacy (they are my great comfort reads) and left the KD books to the last, not the other way round. I actually finished KD 10 this summer. I enjoyed them, but don't have that strong connection to them like most IA fans do.

I don't like gore, but love suspense. I'm excited for this team challenge. It's a nice mix of familiar and new faces for me. I'm usually on Goodreads every day, but this year has been a little weird. I have teen/young adult children and it seems that someone is moving to or from our house every couple of months. Here are my answers to Mel's intro questions:

I have not. This series is completely unfamiliar to me.

Definitely not my go-to genre, but I've read a few.

I don't think I have a favorite. I'm reading the Fourth Wing series, but have mixed feelings about it. I liked Game of Thrones, but I'm frustrated with the lack of ending...and I don't think we are ever getting one.

So many! The Shadow of the Wind, The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Rebecca, and of course The Thursday Murder Club series.

🎲 And finally, tell us something completely non-bookish about yourself! Hobbies, obsessions, pets, games, crafts .... anything goes.

We have a very spoiled beagle named Dudley. He's my reading/walking/napping buddy.

We spend a crazy amount of time at running events. We have three boys and they are all distance runners. We figured out this summer that we've been to over half the states in the U.S. watching track and field or cross country meets. We go in sun, rain, or snow!

I am still catching up on reading this thread, but it has been fun (so far) to get to know you all better. August 31st will be here soon!
