Deanna | 3663 comments Welcome to Team Ferrol and Wheel-a-thon XI!!

Gather your books, charge your favorite e-reader, and join us in exploring the world of Elan. Please read through the rules for wheel (linked in the posts above), and let Teddie and I know if you have any questions.

I'm Deanna, your captain for this adventure. I read mostly fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, and mystery, but I occasionally venture into other genres as the mood strikes me. I live in Virginia and spend my time doing classwork for an accounting degree, working retail full time, and wrangling our dog and 3 cats.

Please take a moment to introduce yourself and post your wheel shelf. I look forward to loads of books and lots of fun!

Keli | 1480 comments Hi all Keli here. I’ve played with many of you before. So soz if you’ve heard this. I’m a Texan living in England. I’ve lived here for 23 years! I get back home ( to the US) about every other year.

I read anything but my fave genres are fantasy and science fiction. I bought the first two books of the Riyria series. I’ve never heard of this series, so I’m looking forward to it.

My shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I look forward to reading and winning with y’all!😉

message 10: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Hi Team! I'll read any genre but tend to gravitate back to fantasy and mysteries - funny, I rate books the same way Keli does too - lol.

I've read a few of the Riyria books, but haven't yet finished a sub-series - planning to do so in this challenge.

Look forward to playing with everyone!

Alyana | 1129 comments Hello everyone! It’s great to be back on your team, Deanna. Just a quick note to let you know I’ll be away for a week but will return before the challenge begins. I’ll share a proper introduction once I’m back!

message 12: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5870 comments Hi everyone!

I’ve been on a team with several of you but it’s been a while since I’ve been with Teddie and Deanna. I’ve captained with Teddie at least once in the past.

I’ve read the first 2 riyria books so hopefully this will push me to read some more of the series.

I’m from the UK and live about an hour south of London with husband (he who created the mazes), 2 children and a 6 month old puppy. On top of that I’m a GP so I keep myself busy! Can sympathise with Deanna’s level of activity.

Until recently I’ve been on the mod squad, but I’ve taken a step back so don’t know more than the rest of the team about what is heading our way (other than educated guesses about how they think).

message 13: by Shan ~A~ (last edited Aug 22, 2026 04:52PM) (new)

Shan ~A~ | 929 comments Hi everyone. I'm Shan. I live in Louisiana.

I read a lot of romance, but I do read other genre such as, but not limited to Mystery, Horror, Memoirs, YA Fantasy, etc...

When not reading, I either working, listening to music, which I'm doing as I type, or watching TV. I also love hanging with my kids, my sister, and my grandbabies and my niece and nephew when they come visit. All of those kids are 7 and under, and although they are a handful, they can be hilarious.

I will admit that I join too many challenges and I have to force myself to do something besides read, unless it involves people. And sometimes even then. 😂

message 14: by Keli (last edited Aug 23, 2026 02:50AM) (new)

Keli | 1480 comments So someone asked a good question in the Medford chat. Many of the books have been reissued as 2 in 1. Will this count as 2 books or 1. I bought Theft of Swords which contains books 1 and 2. Do I have to read the whole thing for it to count? Can I claim the books separately?

message 15: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Keli wrote: "So someone asked a good question in the Medford chat. Many of the books have been reissued as 2 in 1. Will this count as 2 books or 1. I bought Theft of Swords which contains books ..."

Generally, the version you read and add to your shelf is what is counted. So Theft of Swords is counted as one 691 page book.

message 16: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments @Shan: too many challenges? Is that really possible? ;)

@Sophie - fun to be on same team again!

@Alayna: Enjoy your trip!

message 17: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2309 comments Hi everyone! I'm Jackie. I live in North Carolina. I'm retired so generally have a lot of time to read. I'll read almost anything but fantasy, mystery, horror, and science fiction are my favorites. I have read several of the Riyria but it's been quite a while so I might do some rereads. Looking forward to this version of Wheel and reading with you all.

Well, that might be a bonus for me then. I couldn’t find the individual books over here in England under £20 each. Theft of Swords was 4.75 with p&p.

message 20: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 929 comments Looking forward to the challenge! I'm in Ohio, US. I read a lot of horror, sci fi, and thriller but I'll read just about anything and I love to read translated books.

Before I forget again, this is my shelf.

Stacey - if you enjoy thrillers and translated books, the Harry Hole series has been very well done.

message 22: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 385 comments Hi all, just checking it - great to jump from one challenge to another! I am Nistha, originally from India but living in the UK.

Recently, was in TT teams with Teddie and had a lot of fun in it :)

Looking forward to this (though I have a bit of holidays here and there)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Yay! Everybody's here!

The mods should be releasing the team sheets soon, and we'll get a tracking sheet set up soon after that.

Deanna will be spinning for our starting 3 Wheel of Fates soon, so we can start looking at those tasks as well.

Is everyone starting to gather their U, Q, and X books? ;)

message 24: by Teddie (last edited Aug 25, 2026 06:44PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Wanted to mention too, that in addition to our regularly scheduled BOMs, the NBRC Back Room group is reading
Queens of the Jungle (Dino Island, #4) by J. R. Hogan
which won't win the Pulitzer anytime soon, but the discussion's hilarity more than makes up for it.
Queens of the Jungle discussion thread

The other upcoming September BOMs are:
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
starting September 2
DISCUSSION THREAD

Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang
Starting September 16
DISCUSSION THREAD

(These titles and links will all be on the tracking sheet as well.)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments

The tracking sheet is ready for you! There may be a few final tweaks, but you can start entering your planned books, claim a few mini tasks, etc.

You'll be entering your books on the BOOKs tabs, updating your BOM info, and claiming your Sullivan books if you're planning to read some.

For each book, check if it's Romantasy mpg or has the word "arcane" in it and check box, enter how your book works for any of our letters, and enter a mini task ref# and reason if your books works there too. Captains will be slotting the letters into our round's word (which you can see on the Spellout tab) and you can see how many of each letter we need and possibles on the BOOKS tab.

Sounds more confusing than it is I think, but if you have any questions about the sheet, ask away!

You'll need to request access to edit:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 28: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Hey Everybody! Just a little over 2 days until the start of the challenge!

If you haven't had a chance to, please request access to the tracking sheet to start planning your round 1 reads. Y, O, and Z may be the trickiest letters (although we already have 3 Z's, so maybe not) - and keep your eyes out for romantasy mpg and the word "arcane" in the text.

Other than the Sullivan books, do you have any other favorite rogue character books?

What are some books you've read recently that have thoroughly transported you to another place? (doesn't need to be fantasy genre.)

message 29: by Keli (new)

Keli | 1480 comments I requested access a couple days ago but it’s still view only for me.

I am not a fan of romantasy. Yet, I read and love a lot of books with romance and fantasy mpg. Funny.

I got to about page 43 of a book realised it has the word arcane in it. Immediately stopped reading and will start over when the challenge starts. I didn’t really pay attention to those 43 pages anyway😂

message 30: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Lol Keli!

And you should have access to the sheet - maybe close and reopen your browser? Sometimes GS is weird. You should be able to edit and add books to the BOOKS tab (a couple other tabs are locked as they are just getting info from the books tabs.)

message 31: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Romantasy isn't an easy genre for me either, although I have found some gems. I can't do them as audiobooks though - I've found many of them are already dramatically written, and when more drama is tossed in with the narration, it's too much for me :)

message 32: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments If you want to have a say in the October choices, you can vote now:

General Oct BOM

Deep Clean Theme BOM

I'm looking forward to reading The Frozen River this round - it's been on my TBR for a while.

message 33: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5870 comments Woohoo we start today!

Will look at Romantasy. I find it awkward because I like Romanxe and Fantasy separately, but the combination can just annoy me as a lot of it seems on the YA end of the spectrum. But that’s a me problem not an everyone else problem.

message 34: by Teddie (last edited Aug 31, 2026 01:32PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments We're starting in 30 minutes!!

Remember, you can't start a book before the challenge starts, but once we're in it, you can start a book in Round 1 and finish in Round 2, no problem.

message 35: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5870 comments And we’re off! Yay for wheel times.

Unfortunately, no.

message 45: by Keli (new)

Keli | 1480 comments When I finish my book ( in a couple days) it works for morally grey. I think Mircea would be considered morally grey.

message 46: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia | 532 comments Checking in! Things have been super hectic this week so not much reading time but it should hopefully settle soon.

message 47: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 929 comments Finished my first book! Sorry I'm not super helpful this round. I have a few books I need to read from the library. I'll try to do better after the next one or two. (Romantsy is also not a genre I read often).

Question about my current book. Mini task E10 is for a character with a disability. One of the characters breaks their back earlyish on. It's a horror/survival story so not sure how long the character will survive.

message 48: by Teddie (last edited Sep 03, 2026 08:07AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments Thanks for checking in everybody!

Keli, it looks like we now have the morally grey mini task covered, but that brings up a point:

Are you all ok with some moving around of mini tasks now and then? I think the team will benefit by completing these mini 1 spins and getting new ones as quickly as we can. So for example, I just moved one of my books off a task and put someone else's completed book in there.

I'm also thinking it will help if everyone enters the ref#s of the alternate mini tasks your book will work for - or post to the thread to discuss. :)

message 49: by Alyana (new)

Alyana | 1129 comments I'm all good with moving books, whichever works better for the team. I'm also hoping to finish my first book later today. I have been trying to recover from a heavy slump so I'm picking up books I'm comfortable with. Mystery thrillers, romance are my go to books but not really into fantasy.

message 50: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2814 comments I'm glad you're reading what you want to get out of the slump Alyana - hope you find some books you can sink into!
