Hello! I am Melissa, and I will be captaining this challenge with Marie-Anne and Bernadette.

We are here for an 8 week fast and furious challenge - random spins of the wheel, letters, letters, letters, BOMs, and then some mod inspired book findings that may warp our brains forever!!

Here are some questions to get to know each other as teammates :) Feel free to answer however many you would like :)

I like meeting folks and figuring out books that would fit the challenge. I love going to the library and skimming through the stacks.

Nope! But I have the first lined up for the 31st!
🔮What genres do you prefer?
I like mystery, general fiction, nonfiction, and historical fiction. Although I'll read just about anything.

🔮If you enjoy fantasy, which type? High fantasy? Cozy? Urban? Portal? Low? RPG?

I want to like high fantasy, but my brain just says no with the world building sometimes. I can be picky - so easy enough world building, and I'm burnt out on the resource finding ones.
I really loved Priory of the Orange Tree - setting is super important to me.

🔮If you could teleport into any fantasy realm (or any setting), which would you pick?

Rivendell - no doubt.

I like detective and sidekick - or one leader and the other as a wingman / wingperson.

I don't think I'd care to see into the future. I would over think way more than I already do.

I don't think this is this kind of fantasy book, but flying is definitely up there on cool abilities.

I am a middle school teacher, so when I'm not teaching I'm either staring off into space, cooking, or walking the dog! I do love board games.

I'm always along for the weird books I end up reading 😂 as well as new GR friends and chat. I already know some of you so it's good to see you again.

🔮What genres do you prefer?

I'll read almost anything if I have to for the team, but my favorites are Historical Fiction, Fiction, Mystery and Thriller. I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi but I do like some Fantasy. I've never heard of the Riyria Series but I will give one a try and see what I think.

I would say I enjoy cozy, low and portal. I usually need to read (vs listen) to fantasy because of names & locations, etc.

My husband and I just finished a 3-week trip to Alaska where we visited the 8 US National Parks there. We've visited 29 of 63 so far.

AND MOST IMPORTANT - I'm a new grandma🩵 My daughter had our first grandson 4 weeks ago 🥰

Hello, everyone! I'm Erin, and I'm sure many of you have seen me around Goodreads challenges. For those who haven't, look forward to playing with you all! Robin and Kylie and I play on team challenges often - including another starting in September in Kindle Freebies group, so of course I'm especially delighted to find you both here. Bernadette, also especially nice to see and play with you on a team challenge again!

I'm extremely gabby and frequently post in these team challenges. I'm big of pre-planning but not necessarily finishing those plans. I enjoy a wide variety of genres and formats.

All the team NRBC are a blast. Towers is my favorite, but I have played Wheels a few times and greatly enjoy it as well.

No - in fact, never heard of this series. I went ahead and picked up the first in the series on sale in e-book form. If I like enough, will read some more.

I read a large variety - big series reader, paranormal addict, and mood reader - also a book juggler. Many sub-genres of Mysteries, Fantasy, Romance, Horror. I also dabble in non-fiction and other genres. Don't think there is a main genre I don't enjoy where I can't find something.

🔮If you enjoy fantasy, which type? High fantasy? Cozy? Urban? Portal? Low? RPG?

Urban and low fantasy are my favorites. High can work if the writing isn't too stiff and out there for me. I'm NOT a big fan of magical realism at all. RPG isn't something I've read a lot of but Dungeon Crawler Carl audio was quite fun.

Probably Harry Potter as long as I wasn't a muggle. Hogwarts when not at war seems awfully fun.

Depends on the genre, but comedic sarcasm is always a kick when it's not romance heavy

That's a mixed bag. It would help with investments and decision making but could get awfully depressing. Would be a good way to make money as long as the government didn't steal me for experimentation

I have an amazing son who lives with me in his 20's, and across the street my parents and brother live there. I'm so blessed to see them frequently. Have a great group of friends, couldn't be happier with my people and animal group. Three wonderful cats - Malz, my elderly sidekick; Oscar my adorable snuggler who is unusual; Raven my female calico who loves watching TV. Hobbies besides reading - music, exercise (newish), walks, tv, book nook puzzles (newish), computer stuff, spreadsheets

I'm along for the ride, and the challenge of fitting as many of the books on my To Read Next lists, as well as finding new favorites.

No, I have not read any and hope to find the first one at the library and give it a try.

My favorites are mysteries, all genres, including historical and some scifi/fantasy. I'll read anything to do with archaeology, art, ballet and classical music. In non-fiction I particularly like biographies, especially those of female scientist and artists.

High Fantasy and Cozy, some Urban. I'm not familiar with the other ones.

That's a hard one. Maybe the Thurdsay Next (#1: The Eyre Affair), or the Checquy Files world (#1 The Rook), or Inheritance world (#1: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms).

I love playing tennis with my friends and going to the ballet, symphony and other events with my daughter and family. My other hobbies include reading, walking and relaxed time with my husband. He does have a National Parks Passport, and we visit those when we can. My absolute favorite so far was Mesa Verde.

I do have a National Parks Passport with many stamps. Some parks have more than one stamp locations.

For living outside of Philadelphia, we have a fair number of the Western Parks done already. In April we have 3 of the Utah Five planned that we haven't been to yet - Arches, Capital Reef and Canyonland.

I don't think we have played together either off-hand I believe, I'm sure we'll have fun together. Sure, any spreadsheets questions I can see if I can help :)

For sarcasm I like reading a lot of Urban fantasy and such where sarcasm is present, such as Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. I know with NRBC we had a high fantasy book that was high fantasy people enjoyed with humor and to me some sarcasm a few years ago, Kings of the Wyld, that had humor fit this for me to help with the high fantasy.

With our current BOM's coming up, I have read Brandon Sanderson before but not his high fantasy type stuff so hoping this one is good. Skyward. I had read his series (still need to finish last book, keep meaning to this year) for The Reckoners, which I found a lot of fun - https://www.goodreads.com/series/9301...

I had The Frozen River as a note to check out for awhile, so happy that one was picked. Have never heard of Blood Over Bright Haven, but I do like some of the Dark Academia.


Book Nook puzzles are little book or library themed kits you slowly build like a mini dollhouse and put on bookshelves. I own three but have only started on one of them. I'm slow but enjoy them. They can be pretty involved.

I deal with anxiety sometimes so maybe being able to predict the future wouldn’t be the worst ability. At least I would already know how something was going to turn out instead of stressing about.

Right now, I am severely lacking in hobbies. I’m currently in grad school so that takes up a lot of my time when I’m not working. I do have a few houseplants and a garden that I tend too. I have a dog, who is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and he is the best boy. I also have 5 chickens. I live with my husband and three-year-old daughter. She is a delight!

I see some of my favorite peeps here--Erin and Kylie--which I do a lot of team/partner challenges with--so they are used to me and all my shenanigans 🤣

@Bernadette--HEY GIRL HEY!!! It's so good to see you --although you might be dreading being stuck with me and Erin again for another NBRC challenge 🫣 I remember you telling us that you and your husband were working through the National Parks--so fun and exciting!

For those of you who don't know me--Well, I'm just me. I'm an AVID reader--hitting about 1000 books per year. YEP, I read that much. I rarely watch tv--I normally have an audiobook going OR I let the kindle read to me--even though I don't really care for the virtual voice narration.

I live in Middle TN--just south of Nashville. I have two grown sons, 2 grandsons, and 2 step granddaughters. I have 2 grand furbabies too. I'm disabled so I'm at home most of the time. I spend a lot of time here on GR and involved in a lot of challenges.

Besides reading, I like to do crafts--all kinds, computer/tablet games, I do a lot with my 2 grandsons, and whatever else I can insert myself in 🤣

It's nice to meet all of you and I look forward to playing this challenge with you.

Well, that's a hard question, I like almost anything. The classics, of course, and there is a lot of variety there depending on the company and director/choreographer: The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote; Something colorful and fund for kids is The Nutcracker, offered by almost any ballet company during the holidays -- there is a wide variety there, so not all of them are great. I also like a lot of the modern ones. The 2 most amazing modern pieces I've seen in the last couple of years at PNB (Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle) are The Season's Canon and Emergence

UMMMMM--I love SPELL OUT type challenges. So that part I'm super stoked about. I read an extreme amount of books--so I usually just wing it by slotting my books in. I like the chat and the competition. Being a heavy reader, I also don't mind helping out the team by doing those dreaded tasks nobody else likes 🤣

TBH-- I have never heard of this series or the author.

I mostly read Historical Fiction, YA, MG, mystery of all kinds, thanks to Erin I now will read Horror--I read a little bit of everything.

UGGGHHH-- I don't care for Fantasy--I have tried it and I just don't care for it too much. But if I had to choose--I would have to say Cozy--there's been a couple of those that I really liked.

All that world building and weird creatures--NOPE just not for me--so much wasted time.

UMMM this here gal isn't teleporting to any fantasy realm 🤣 Now, I might consider teleporting to the Titanic as long as I can get back before it sinks.

HMMM--I don't know that I really have a favorite--it depends on the story line--I can get really picky with some of this stuff 🤣

I'm not sure I want to know what the future holds--if it was all positive good things--then sure bring it on--all the negative stuff--bypass me with all that 😒

Hobbies: crafts--crochet, diamond art, beadwork, making odd n end things with my grandsons--I dibble and dabble in all kinds of crafts.

Pets: I lost my two dogs--one in 2020 and the other in 2022. Now I just keep my 2 son's dogs, Freya and Titan.

Things to do/people: I spend a lot of time with my children and grandchildren. I tend to have my 2 grandsons a lot. I like to be at home so most times you will find me right here, reading, doing crafts, hanging out on GR or playing games on my phone/tablet.

What kinds of cats and dogs? I have the general mutt variety here - although my dog is a mostly blue heeler, and the amount of love and sass that he provides is perfect, so I'm smitten.

Cats have sass and love already - so I can never go wrong there :)

We are working on our tracking sheet. It should be up and ready within a day or so.

Nice to see our first word is out, I was spending this week as I tend to do before big challenges start and end of month with some pre-planning for the next month, so that helps. MEDFORD isn't bad at all for our first round to me.

Elephant in the room.....

So I noticed that reading The Riyria Chronicles each book is a mini basically 20 bonus points once per book per team.

Lots of points since there are 17 books listed = 340 points

I don't recall them doing this before with a series theme.

I had never heard of these books.

Since it's just one bonus per book per team, we cannot have several read the first book for the bonus points, we'd have to keep climbing.

I know with Robin that she is not a Fantasy or Adventure Fantasy fan

So my question is, anyone on the team a fan of these and plan on reading them?

I will try the first early and see what I think but no idea if I'll like or not. Hopefully so.

Maybe? Would be nice if they are great found books I had no idea existed and we become instant fans, but then again that certainly may not happen. We had a Discworld theme here before as well and while those books are cute, I don't like ready many of those.

We know some of the other teams will and the point difference is decent but not a full dealbreaker.

Hey Team!!!

I'm a little slow responding 🤣 this week. I just had surgery on my left hand on Tuesday and just got the bandages etc removed today.

Lots of soreness and swelling but I'm using that hand minimally today 😒hopefully over the next couple of days...it will be better.

I hope for a speedy recovery!

:) I really hope it feels better though. I've never had surgery, but I've had many loved ones have surgery, and recovery seems to be tough at first.
