Welcome to the tent, bakers!
The bunting is up, the ovens are preheated, and everyone is pretending they’re not nervously staring at everyone else’s workstations. It can only mean one thing: The Great Reading Bake-Off has officially begun!
We’re starting exactly where any respectable Bake Off should—with cake. This week is all about light sponges, beautiful swirls, classic flavors, and tiny cakes that are far more demanding than anything that small has a right to be.
Aprons on. Books ready.
On your marks… get set… READ!
🍥 SIGNATURE — SWISS ROLL
First into the tent is a deceptively simple classic: the Swiss Roll.
A Swiss roll starts with a thin, light sponge cake that is spread with a filling—traditionally jam, cream, or both—and carefully rolled into its signature spiral. The trick is getting a soft, flexible sponge and a neat, tight swirl without cracking the cake, squishing out the filling, or accidentally creating something better described as a Swiss Fold.
Like every good Signature Challenge, there’s plenty of room to make this one your own. Classic and elegant? Bold and unexpected? Completely over the top? The choice is yours.
🍒 TECHNICAL — MARY BERRY'S CHERRY CAKE
Now please step away from your workstations while we prepare the Technical Challenge.
Under the gingham cloth this week is a Bake Off classic: Mary Berry's Cherry Cake.
This traditional cake is packed with glacé cherries and finished with icing and cherries on top. Sounds straightforward, doesn't it?
Oh, you sweet summer baker.
The real challenge is getting those cherries evenly suspended throughout the sponge instead of watching every last one make a determined journey to the bottom of the cake. It was exactly the sort of deceptively simple bake designed to test technique rather than fancy decoration.
🧁 SHOWSTOPPER — CLASSIC MINIATURE BRITISH CAKES
For your final challenge of Cake Week, it's time to go big…
…by going very, very small.
The Showstopper is a collection of Classic Miniature British Cakes. In the original Bake Off challenge, the bakers had to produce 36 miniature cakes, turning familiar British favorites into tiny, polished versions worthy of the judges' table.
Think Battenberg, Victoria sponge, coffee and walnut cake, lemon drizzle, fruit cake and other tea-table classics—all shrunk down into individual little showpieces.
And miniature does not mean easier. Every tiny cake still needs the flavor, texture, decoration, and personality of its full-sized counterpart.
Because apparently making one beautiful cake wasn't stressful enough.
Three challenges. One Cake Week.
Whether your reading rises beautifully or sinks spectacularly in the middle, all that matters is that you step into the tent and give it a go.
Welcome to The Great Reading Bake-Off. Let the baking—and the reading—begin! 🍰📚

📋 Before We Start Baking...
Before the first challenge can come out of the oven, we need to make sure the whole baking crew has arrived.
Every team member should check in to this thread. A quick hello, wave, or enthusiastic declaration of baking readiness will do!
Once everyone has checked in, the judges will return with your first Baking Week and your challenge spreadsheet.
🍰 A Few Things to Remember
There are no points, no race, and no advantage to finishing quickly. Work together, read at the pace that works for your team, and have fun with what your books give you.
When you've completed a Baking Week, take your finished creations to 🍰 The Judging Table — Baker Check-In. Once you've checked in there, watch this thread for the announcement of your next Baking Week.
Until a Baking Week is officially announced here, don't start working on it yet.
For now, all we need is your check-in.
The tent is ready.
The judges are waiting.
And somewhere nearby, a Technical recipe is already plotting against you. 👀

Not quite yet. Check in first. 😏🧁
