WHEELATHON XI — ALL THE THINGS!
🎡August 31 – October 26 | 8 weeks | 4 rounds
Welcome to this Riyria-inspired adventure! If you are new to wheels, here is a quicky rundown: Each round, the wheel gives us a word, and our job is to read books that let us spell it out. Letters can come from titles, authors, significant fictional characters, narrators, or translators. 📚
⚔️ THE QUICK VERSION
🔸4 rounds × 2 weeks each
🔸Each round = a new word
🔸Books must be 100+ pages and started after the challenge begins
🔸Only books finished during the current round count
🔸Once we spell our word, we can keep spelling it for more points!
🔸Points are based primarily on page count
🔸There are also BOM points + Riyria/Elan bonuses + mini challenges
🔸Full official rules are here — please read them if you haven't!
---
🚨 NEW: READING CAPS
This is the big change, so PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS ONE. 😂
When you signed up, you gave the mods your expected books-per-round number. That becomes your individual cap for EVERY round.
So, if you signed up for 15 books per round, you can personally count up to 15 books each round.
BUT! We know life happens. Maybe you're on fire one round and suddenly read 18 books. 🔥
The TEAM gets an additional 10 books per round beyond everyone's individual caps.
So with a 15-book cap, you could potentially read 18 — provided the team as a whole stays within our extra 10 books.
Those extra books can be divided however we want. One person could use all 10, or several people could use a few each.
If you're confused about how this works, ASK! I'd rather explain it now than have someone discover their 16th book doesn't count. 😅
---
📊 TEAM TRACKING SPREADSHEET
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
We'll have one central spreadsheet for the entire team. It's linked above!
Everyone should add their books there (on the "Book Input" tab). This isn't about making your life harder — it's so the captains can see everything in one place and figure out:
📖 What books can fill which letters
🧩 What we can use for mini challenges
🏆 Where we're scoring points
📈 How we're doing toward our team goals
Once the mini-challenge coding is added to the spreadsheet, you'll also be able to claim mini tasks directly there.
Please use the tracker! It keeps us from having 47 different posts trying to figure out who read what. 😂
However! If spreadsheets are not your thing or you're just not comfortable using it, that is absolutely fine! You can still post your completions here in the team thread, and one of us will add them to the sheet for you.
If you'd prefer to do it this way, just give us a heads-up now so we know to keep an eye out for your completion posts!
If you have questions about the sheet — FIRE AWAY! Seriously, ask. No question is too dumb. 😂
And never fear: if you break something, I can fix it. It's just a spreadsheet. It's not special. It does not have feelings. It cannot hold a grudge. 😌
---
🗡️ MOST IMPORTANTLY...
Check in on this thread at least once a week. This is more important than it used to be, thanks to Goodreads deciding that direct messages were apparently no longer necessary. 🙃 We really have no way to find you if you disappear, and the mods are much stricter about replacing inactive players now.
Add your books to the tracker.
Talk to your fellow adventurers.
Ask questions when something doesn't make sense.
And remember: we're trying to win this thing, people. 😈📚
Let's go spell some words. 🗡️

🗡️ YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD CAPTAIN HAS ARRIVED!Hi, everyone! I'm Ashley, your captain for this particular adventure. 👋
A few things you should probably know about me before we spend the next eight weeks reading our way into increasingly questionable situations:
🏡 Where you're adventuring from: Alabama — where apparently the adventure is mostly heat and humidity. 😂
⭐ Favorite genre(s): Fantasy, romance, lit fic, memoirs, and slowly but surely becoming a classics person.
❤️ A book you'll recommend until people block you: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. I will not be taking questions at this time. 😂
📖 Currently reading: The Turn: The Hollows Begins with Death, A Court of Wings and Ruin (outloud... to my husband), Small Great Things
... because apparently I enjoy having approximately 14 books going at once.
😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: I will absolutely remember a completely insignificant detail about a book I read 10 years ago, but ask me what I walked into the room for and it's GONE.
🧙 Have you read any of the Riyria books? NO. In fact, I had never even heard of them before this challenge.
Which, as someone who reads A LOT, I find deeply appalling and frankly embarrassing. 😂
So apparently I'm your captain despite having zero Riyria credentials whatsoever. I assume this is where the adventure begins.
ICEBREAKER QUESTION
🧠 The Strategist
I'm definitely the strategist. I like a plan, I like knowing what we're doing, and I would very much like everyone to please follow the plan I have carefully constructed. 😂
I'm also a Gemini, so naturally I will look at the situation, make a spreadsheet, develop a contingency plan, and then five minutes later say, "Okay, but what if we did this completely different thing instead?"
Basically: I have a plan. I also have a completely different plan. And honestly, Plan C is looking pretty good right now.
Hey Team Eton! Looking forward to joining you all on our adventures. I’ll be one of your co-captains…I’ve wheeled many times and I recognize several of our teamies and look forward getting to know everyone!
🏡 Where you're adventuring from: I live in the St Louis area
⭐ Favorite genre(s): I enjoy historical fiction most but honestly I’ll read anything…I do tend to avoid horror.
❤️ A book you'll recommend until people block you: I think everyone should read Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. It’s one of the books that changed my perspective…I love those plots especially.
I also love recommending books…count on me for recommendations if you need them!
📖 Currently reading: I just finished The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar and starting Off the Hook Julie Olivia.
😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: I’m typically reading a paperback and an audio simultaneously as I spend a lot of time in the car. I like to have something handy as I’m not a social media person and I don’t watch much t.v.
🧙 Have you read any of the Riyria books? I’ve not. Fantasy is not my ‘go to’ genre but we’ll see :)
🧠 The Strategist
I’m also a strategic person. I’ve usually got my reading plan in place about 1 month out. I am very flexible though and will go along with what the team needs and change / detour as needed.
***REMINDER TO ALL…please mark this thread for notifications!!***
📚 Name / Goodreads name: Carrie 🏡 Where you're adventuring from: Near Pittsburgh, PA
⭐ Favorite genre(s): Mystery, Thriller, Nordic Noir and Horror
❤️ A book you'll recommend until people block you:
📖 Currently reading: Just finished
😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: I collect bookmarks and have themed ones to match the genre of book I'm reading. Matter of fact, I just bought a really cool Halloween pumpkin one to prepare myself for spooky seasonal reads!
🧙 Have you read any of the Riyria books? I have not and I, too, had never heard of them before this challenge!
Icebreaker Question
I'm a fly by the seat of my pants and mood reader for sure. Every once in awhile a new release may demand my attention but not often.
I'm thrilled to see we have some strategists on the team!
Tammie! I'm reading Small Great Things right now! I'm about a third of the way in... it's fantastic so far!
📚 Name / Goodreads name: Rosina my nickname is Zina🏡 Where you're adventuring from: in the foothills of the Rockies - outside Calgary Alberta

did an immersive read and loved it!!📖 Currently reading:
just finished watching the series and wanted to finally read the books😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: I tend to plan out my reads and then once the challenge starts it all goes out the window and I just read according to how I feel.
🧙 Have you read any of the Riyria books? Have not heard of the series but will try to read one during the challenge.
🗡️ ICE BREAKER!
Every adventure needs a little getting-to-know-you before we start throwing ourselves into danger. 😂
You've been recruited for a quest, but nobody bothered to tell you what the quest actually is. What role are you taking?
🍗 The one carrying the snacks - Every good quest needs someone to provide the drinks and munchies.
I am not much of a snacker when I read but I do enjoy a really good cup of coffee or tea.
Hi Zina! Great to have you! I LOVE Dungeon Crawler Carl! I've read them ALL and I'm dying for a new one!
Ashley wrote: "Hi Zina! Great to have you! I LOVE Dungeon Crawler Carl! I've read them ALL and I'm dying for a new one!"Hi Ashley great to be with the team. I absolutely LOVE Dungeon Crawler Carl and will be reading them through this challenge. The audio is so good.
I will be doing 2 of the BOM...already read The Frozen River last year and enjoyed it. A great read!...I have the other one waiting for me at the library and I will try the Back Room BMO for a laugh...Its on KU and hoping I can read it out of series order. Its a short one...
I have been struggling on jumping on the Maasverse band wagon for the Oct release of ACOTAR 6... Not sure I have the stamina to read all 3 series....Crescent City series is more to my liking...
Has anyone read all of her series? Views should I give a try?
I have read them all, and I'm rereading all the ACOTAR books to my husband for funsies! He is really enjoying them! Personally, I really like her books, the Throne of Glass series is my favorite, I think about it all the time. I was emotionally scarred! But, I like that. Crescent City is also really good, I enjoyed the heck out of that series! So, if you ask me.... YES Read them ALL!
But also, there is no reason you need to rush through them - I see people freaking out all the time, "How will I read all these before the new book comes out!?" and I wonder why they need to... the book... isn't going anywhere! lol

Outlander is one of my all time favorite series…I almost gave up on book 1…after page-ish 150 I was glad I didn’t. I hope you love it!
📚 Name / Goodreads name: Sharon🏡 Where you're adventuring from: Northeast Pennsylvania, opposite side of the state from Carrie 😊
⭐ Favorite genre(s): Romance, Mystery/Thriller, Fiction. I tend to not read fantasy, but my husband is a fan so I’m familiar with some of the authors and series. Ashley, Ilona Andrews is definitely one he reads
❤️ A book you'll recommend until people block you: Daisy Jones & The Sixbut it has to be the audiobook
📖 Currently reading: A Not So Meet Cute and listening to The Winners

I’m definitely more of a strategist- I like having a plan. Funnily enough the only place that doesn’t apply is my reading. My books are usually at the whim of whatever I get from the library
Tammie...enjoy your visit...have you tried poutine yet?Loving Outlander...i think its easy to visualize Jaime...Sam H..is so perfect of a casting
Ashley...i always think the same about the tush to read...the book isn't going anywhere...
I will have to try Maasverse just not sure when...

I did see the series and I liked the book better. They made some plot changes in the series that I didn’t really like. But I thought the casting was fantastic and the soundtrack was great too.

Hello team! It was wonderful reading everyone's intros. I am one of your co-captains and looking forward to this challenge with all of you. 📚 Name / Goodreads name: Upton or Christine. 😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: My family (myself, mom, and siblings) ALWAYS have a book with us and will break it out and start to read any moment there is a lull in a conversation. The entire group can eat a meal with all of us noses deep in our books.

Hi Sharon - always nice to have a fellow PA reader friend. I’m pretty close to Pittsburgh- about a 40 minute drive so close enough for the fun stuff in the city but far enough away to have a yard full of wildlife!
Also, I love that you remember the first book you read by yourself. My earliest memory of reading isn’t my first book but I know I was obsessed with reading Ribsy by Beverly Cleary when I was quite young.

📖 Currently reading: Anne of Windy Poplars The Secret to Superhuman Strength. I have held off starting new stuff until this challenge starts since I only promised 2-3 books
😈 One completely useless bookish fact about yourself: As someone else said, we always have books with us. Once my daughter and I went into The Last Bookstore in downtown LA and on entering the guy said "Do you have any books with you?" and was flabbergasted when we both whipped out 2 two books and said "yeah". He held them until we left, no doubt to reduce theft. We were shocked at his reaction, like dude you asked and it's a bookstore. Readers carry books with them.

Heatwave twin! I've always wanted to go to The Last Bookstore...I always think it's so weird that I've lived in San Diego my whole life but rarely ever go to Los Angeles when it's so close! I need to make visiting The Last Bookstore a priority!
I would love to be the person who plan across challenges. However, I am the person who will spend hours planning books and then forgets what I planned and goes off the cuff anyway.Ashley and Tammie mentioned Small Great Things and I have been meaning to read that one forever. If I can use it during this challenge, I am going for it.
We seem to have a team comprised of people who have never read or heard of the Riyria series, I feel like that is weird.
