Terrie | 1 comments City of survivors in a walled city. Lit at night to keep man-eating bats away. Three book series. I read it in the 90’s early 2000’s

Joseph Marquis | 434 comments Likely The Passage series, by Justin Cronin.

Second is The Twelve, then City of Mirrors.

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 557 comments Just wondering if it might be the Darwath series by Barbara Hambly. The original three book series was The Time of the Dark (1982), The Walls of Air (1983) and The Armies of Daylight (1985)."

Three thousand years before, the monstrous Dark had sprung from loathsome underground lairs to destroy most of humanity. Now they were again ravening and ruining in their blood-hunger. Only a few thousand people had managed to find refuge in the ancient fortress Keep of Renweth."

Sue Elleker | 1090 comments I couldn't find a complete summary, but the Loremasters of Elundium series by Mike Jefferies has buildings that need to be kept lit to jeep monsters away. https://www.fantasticfiction.com/j/mi...
