Cl0udd | 94 comments recently, I’ve been writing a book and is now on chapter 9. Even though this is my first draft, I’m a perfectionist and still can’t get over how my first chapter heeds change….but what change.
I would love suggestions!! (Later on the chapters you get to know the characters so dw abt just getting thrown in)
Disclaimer for some reason the format is so off and I’m too lazy to change it so mb 💔

Chapter 1

I see something falling from the sky.
No, not something. Someone.
“You see that, Seva?” I yell out to him. “Someone is falling in the sky! Where do you think they’re going to land?”
We’re running—running fast—but somehow I still hear the sirens growing louder.
They found us.
Still running, Seva turns to me and grumbles, “We're trying to escape right now, and that’s what you are thinking about? Focus!”
He slows down, looking at the roads and buildings to the side of us. “We need to hide somewhere--anywhere. We can't outrun them.”
The alarms wail even louder, mocking our puny escape, teasing that we would never actually make it.
“Over here!” Hunter shouts, dashing to a narrow alleyway. It is between two structures, towering high,
the sunlight from the sunset reflects on the walls with pink, orange, and red. The streetlights aren’t on yet--the
sun is setting--but that won’t hide us for long. I check for any cameras nearby, but none are visible.
Seva and I follow Hunter to the alley, all of us pushing against the cool brick wall of the left building,
blending in with our all black uniforms. We are all exhausted, breathing heavily yet quietly. Seconds go by, and
we see the flashing lights. Red and White, beaming into the alleyway, lighting our faces.
Seva, Hunter, and I are runaways. We do what we want, but mostly to survive. Over the past 4 months,
we have all been taking shady jobs in exchange for currency. Last week, we were ordered to knock out some
security drones--easy work for Hunter, who knows everything about technology--and the month before, we
went downtown to map out the sewage lines. Most of the jobs aren’t that bad, but not always.
Two days ago, we were requested for a risky job. The higher the stakes, means higher money, and higher
money means more equipment and gadgets. Seva, the head of our group, reluctantly agreed, so we sealed the
deal.
We were assigned to break into the most well-known research center and steal what the vendor called,
“the sphere.”--A ball that glows faint blue, hidden in a compartment of a project the scientists were working on.
We would have to avoid security drones, scientists, and most of all, the leader, Raven Marlowe. After her
parents died from a confidential accident, she took over and earned her fame by creating many new inventions
that we use today.
When we stole this “sphere”, instantly the alarms went off and it became a manhunt; if Marlowe and her
team could catch us before we could escape.
And right now, they're next to us, where we were seconds before. Seconds before I saw that person
plummeting down.
I glance at Seva, the closest by the opening, and whisper, “We need to see if that person needs help-”
“Quiet!” he murmurs while peeking over the wall. “I need to listen to what they’re saying.”
Seva is still keeping an eye on them when all of a sudden, he gasps.
“What happened? What did you see?” Hunter asks. He tries to peek around the wall too but Seva grabs
his arm and shakes his head, motioning for him to stay.
“We have no time,” He shifts his gaze to me. I can see in his creased brow and worried eyes, now know
that we are in so much more trouble than I thought we were. We are trapped.
“Kyle, what you’re going to do is very important.” He slips his hand into his jacket’s pocket, pulling out
the glowing sphere. “You need to bring this back to where we all planned to go. Please don't look back. Keep
running.” His eyes bore into me desperately. “No matter what happens, don’t come back. Do you understand? ”
I'm confused, concerned, and definitely scared.. “Wha-What’s going on out there?”
He grabs my shoulder with his free hand. His grip is tense as I try pulling away. “You didn't answer.
Please tell me you understand.” I stare blankly at him before nodding.
That's when I hear it, their voices.
“...Search around! I know those bastards are here!”
Right away, I know what to do, securing the sphere out of Seva’s hand, which glows with a radiant blue
light. The rays outlining everything in the alleyway. It’s so mesmerising…but deadly. I shove it inside my coat
and look at both of my friends.
“Please be safe,” I mutter, and slip out of the alleyway.
Out of the billions of people known on Eartha, no one has ever had a power. Not a random person, not
the government. Not even Raven Marlowe. But somehow…someway, I gained one; the ability to camouflage
into anything, even my surroundings.
Seva and Hunter are the only ones who know, and Seva insists on keeping it a secret. If I slip up, then
everyone will know, hell will happen, and I who knows, I would probably be one of Marlowe’s next tests.
“...They’re in the alley!-”
I freeze, my heart pounding rapidly.
Marlowe’s team found them.
Seva told me to keep going; he and Hunter can handle it. I hope they really can.
I keep sprinting, invisible to everyone and anything. The roads are empty, partially because the sun now
set, and partially because they are on this block. If they're here, it means it's no good. The streetlights flicker on,
illuminating the roads and stranded buildings.
Once I reach the end of the block, I stop, looking at the direct view of the main city, Fico. It’s mostly in
a major ditch, with a few buildings sprinkled outside of the excavation. At night, the hole blossoms with
different colors and lights. It’s so beautiful, with the skyscrapers towering high, roads swerving around them,
transportation drones hovering above the city, and the vital beacon of light beaming into the sky.
That beacon is the reason why our city is safe. It pools over the land, acting like a shield, keeping
citizens in, and unwanteds out. If someone does want to cross the beacon, it's a major process, one that we can
never do from our records. None of us has ever left Fico, but looking from the view right here, it's the closest
we can get.
When I finally catch my breath, I continue to the left, where buildings and houses gradually decrease,
and trees and scenery appear. The lights from the city start to fade as I walk deeper into the wilderness, the
crunch of leaves breaking the silence. Suddenly, a memory flashes in my mind.
That falling person--they must be nearby…
I pause, realizing that without Seva and Hunter, this could be a perfect time to go and find them.
Before I think to go back, the sphere flares underneath my coat, humming a low, threatening note. It
pulses an electric blue and white faster and faster, the heat radiating through my shirt.
I begin to panic. What did I do?
My coat glows from the light, gaining more heat with a sharp, metallic buzzing. I need to go before this
thing alerts nearby drones!
I begin bolting down the pathway, ducking under the branches and swerving around the trunks. My coat
sears against my side, the smell of scorched fabric filling my nose.
Finally, the brush starts to clear, and I see my destination, an abandoned neighborhood. It's isolated, trees
surrounding it with one road exiting the wall of plants. The streetlights flicker on and off, on their last life of
energy, while the houses stay still in time, lonely and hollow.
My skin starts burning. I need to hurry now.
I run to the third house on the street--the one we all decided on to meet at--and shoulder open the door.
The sphere is flashing blinding jagged lights now, melting the inner lining of my coat.
I bite my scream down and yank it out of my coat, my palms stinging as I look for anywhere I can put it.
“What do I do…what do I do?!”
The sphere is too hot now. I drop it to the floor, where it floods the whole house in violent blue and
white strobes. I begin to panic again and scramble to the corner of the living room, covering my eyes, but the
light still bleeds through my eyelids. The flashes accelerate, and the humming note climbs to a deafening
screech. I’m about to bolt out the door when all of a sudden, it stops.
What just happened?
Silence rings in my ears. I can’t speak. I can't hear. I can't breathe.
What in the world did we just steal?

The cliffhanger was incredibleeee!!

insert_username2488 | 212 comments WAIT I LOVE THIS genuinely like I would actually read this! the characters and all are amazing, i love it, just to clarify is the mc a male or female? 😭 sorry bro sorry. and the ending was great, suspense is well written, the urgency of the chase is wel written too, and the power is so cool! i think it's the first time ive heard of a power to camouflage with your surroundings, idk, it's interesting! also, personally I think that the sphere could be capitalized to add like that daunting feel, that it's something abnormal and stuff, like The Sphere, or the Sphere, like that, y'know? you get me?

Cl0udd | 94 comments Omg that would help capitalizing “The Sphere” 👀
Also you got a point there I need to describe the main character more in the chapter 😭. My book is a multi-POV, but in this chapter is a guy named Kyle 🙌

insert_username2488 | 212 comments yesss, The Sphere would be so cool and ominous, and ahh tbh since I read more female protagonist books, I just naturally assumed it was one, but then the name threw me off and I was like wait huh? and multi pov sounds so cool, I love books like that!
