Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

It's now time to get ready to vote for our next set of prompts! The thread will be open for at least 24 hours before the poll gets posted. This is a good opportunity to ask any question you may have regarding the prompts, do some research, or ask for recommendations.

Voting will open in the morning of Monday, August 31 and results will be posted in the morning of Friday, September 4 (CST time).

First thoughts, I will be going 3 up and 5 down. I'm going to think on some of these.

I'm kind of meh on these. No definite downvotes but very few that excite me.

I missed suggestions due to sleeping in, but it's going to be hard to pick.

13) Satire or humorous book - no, I like seriousness, thrills and horror. (I laugh a lot and am a humorous person, I need to balance that with either darkness or serious matters that don't make me laugh. I could do with another kind of uplifting book, a book that makes me feel content and happy in a calm way, but not comedy! I preferred an earlier suggestion about an uplifting book.)

The rest are Neutral or "why not"? But "why not" is not enough for me to upvote, I won't mind them being upvoted buy others though.

Satire doesn't have to be humorous.

Just a note of clarification: the Nobel Prize for Literature is actually awarded to an author for their body of work, and there are no individual books that get nominated.

I know there are some who don't like lists but the N sounds promising. A lot of the links just go to the most recent year, but if the prompt wins, we could include how to find previous years. And some of the links just show the winner, not those nominated/long listed. Wikipedia usually lists the whole history. of each award.

To Joy's point, it could be any book by a Nobel winner.

Thanks for this list, Dubhease! So many options for different reading tastes - without being "read any book."

Sorry I didn't clarify that the Nobel Prize in Literature is for a body of work (for our purposes, read anything by a winning author).

There are 3 that I really like: the N Lit awards, Star Wars, and suggestion that didn’t make the list. I’m not averse to any of the prompts so maybe no down votes this week. Maybe.

Re: the awards, I know some people don’t like list prompts. I’m usually one of them but it does depend on the list. I like that there is a variety of lists and some really good ones! I tend to read books that are on lit award lists anyway but I also like to browse different awards and look for new titles. The Nero award is one I’ve never heard of and looks interesting! I’m always interested in the Nebula, the National Book award and the Nobel Prize. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Newberry list, which I also like, is linked to my local library in Albuquerque. 😃 I also found 2 other awards: Naoki prize (Japan) and the Nordic Council Literary prize.

Thank you! I'm always in for reading the Nobel Prize winners, (it's a huge event in Sweden, since it's a Swedish prize and the ceremonies and deep discussions and the festivities are always broadcasted. I'm curious to know if it's broadcasted in any other country? )

But there are several other interesting award lists included here!

Nike - I think you can livestream the ceremony but it’s not broadcast on major commercial TV stations in the U.S.

2. A pop culture book - I like books that analyze pop culture, but there are lots of other prompts here that I love so not sure I like this oen enough to vote for it

3. A book nominated for the National Book Awards, the Nobel Prize in Literature, or any other literary competition starting with N - Downvote. I don't pay attention to awards at all, and I found the similar prompt with W Awards overwhelming to research when it was suggested in the past.

A book about a maritime adventure and/or misadventure - My instinctive first response was downvote because for some reason I have an aversion to books set on boats, but then I realized I have a surprising number of locked room thrillers set on boats as well as books involving pirates, so I might even upvote

6. A book related to Australia - I don't quite get the "related to" in this one. It feels like it should have been a setting prompt, but using the related to wording keeps it a bit more broad. Either way, I'm not particularly interested

#3 - I LOVE the N award prompt because there is really something for everyone - all ages, tastes, in different parts of the world. See the lists in message 2 and 15. If you don’t see something you like, just ask for help. Some of us love making suggestions based on your favorites or tbr.

#1 I always vote for this. It usually doesn’t gets in until the end.

#2 - I have the perfect Pop Culture book for anyone interesting in social change and gay rights. It’s about how television helped change social attitudes about lbgtq rights and gay marriage.

#4 I have at least two books about female assassins. Why? Idk I must have known this was coming,

#5 and #11 - I have plenty for each. Maritime and Star Wars are great for long car trips with my husband, We read a John Scalzi book this week that would fit Star Wars. It was very entertaining.

#13 - For Humor, my GO TO is David Sedaris book on audio. He is great for car trips too. I already bought his newest book.

#6, #7, #9 I like all 3. I usually read at least one a year. I also like multiracial books.

The rest are all easy enough to find.

I thought about leaving an up off to also down vote related to Australia because it feels like it was meant to be a setting prompt but like my top 4 enough to leave it be.

The rest of the neutrals I wouldn't mind seeing get in..but there are only 8 votes.

I think the wording “related to Australia” opens the prompt up so it’s not just a setting prompt. It could be a book by an Australian author or with Australian characters with a setting outside the country. I didn’t use Australia in the 3 country prompt this year so I will likely vote for it. I have several books by Thomas Keneally, J. M. Coetzee, Tim Winton, and Jane Harper and I might even look for an Australian sci-fi or fantasy author.

I like the N prize, maritime and Star Wars most.

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

I was wrong about the other one. I just checked with AI, and discovered the assassin was male.

I'm admittedly not very excited about this set of suggestions and hope the fun ones comes back next round.

My first impressions: (it's quite downvote heavy so I'll definitely check back to read comments to make my final decisions)

3. A book nominated for the National Book Awards, the Nobel Prize in Literature, or any other literary competition starting with N - On the fence about this one. It really bothers me that the Nobel Prize is included because books can't be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which is given to people, not to individual books. You could stretch the meaning to say a book by an awarded author counts as being nominated for it but if it makes it in, I still hope the wording gets fixed since that'd be a KIS interpretation and not a factually accurate one. I also don't understand the relevance of the N connection. However, as far as award/list prompts go this one has a good number of options and I like that it's not a prompt I've seen before.

4. A book with a female villain, criminal, or wrong-doer - downvote. This is a massive spoiler for many mystery books and the last time a similar prompt came up people brought up books without hiding the titles for spoilers.

5. A book about a maritime adventure and/or misadventure - neutral

6. A book related to Australia - downvote. We have Asia/Australia/Africa this year and already voted in Asia for next year so I just really don't want a repeat. I couldn't find a book set in Australia this year and finding one related to Australia sounds even harder.

Another interpretation of the 'related to Australia' could involve a person being sent to prison, or to a prison island, or to a prison planet if it's scifi.

I apologize for short-cutting what would have been the correct wording. The mods have stressed many times that they prefer if we keep prompts as short as possible and mine was already long even without adding an additional note about Nobel being for the author's entire body of work rather than one individual book by them. I am also normally a stickler for accuracy but this one defeated me. If this gets in and you choose Nobel, I hope you can think of it, rather than using a KIS option, as honoring the intent of the prompt creator!

I usually don't like list prompts, but with the Newbery in there, I'll probably upvote it. My daughter is starting to read chapter books but I'm having a hard time finding something she and I would both like, so a deep dive into Newbery nominees and winners could kill 2 birds with one stone for me!

I also love the multiracial family prompt. I feel like we haven't had too many prompts that you have to hunt for. I think the listopia will be a gold mine. I also like that it allows for different genres.

The NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature is also awarded to an author rather than for a specific book. Although the prompt does say a book, I would include books by an author for the NSK and the Nobel.

I didn't care for the cover prompts - wild animal on the cover is too hard and clothing on the cover is too easy. Usually any person on the cover is wearing clothing! I guess the BIO would be an article of clothing not on a person.

We had a discussion about this on the Wild Discussion thread, and it was pointed out that the term "maritime" refers to the seaside as well as the sea itself (as in the "Maritime Provinces" of Canada). So books where the action takes place on the seashore or in a seaside town would count for this as well.

I've read When the Dancing Stopped: The Real Story of the Morro Castle Disaster and Its Deadly Wake and The Great Halifax Explosion: A World War I Story of Treachery, Tragedy, and Extraordinary Heroism and both were excellent, if you like disaster books!

Though they're not my cup of tea, I feel like there's been a lot of romances on cruise ships books lately.

Killers of a Certain Age is great. the 2nd book in the series, Kills Well with Others, is good as well.

This is great information. That never occurred to me, but it's absolutely correct.

I want to comment on the "multiracial" expression. The word angers me. Already when I studied anthropology 25 years ago the word race was dismissed but I know that you're still using that word in the US - but I do wonder why!

All human beings on earth belong to one and the same race. Multiracial would then mean that there are families containing e g both Homo Sapiens and Neanderthal humans or Homo Habilis. Well, many do have 1- 4 % Neanderthal genes anyway.

The correct word would be Multiethnical or multifenotypic. It always angers me when I see or hear the word race in US series or books - or here. It's as if there's an agenda of benign structural racism* that Really wants people to be misinformed and view "other people" as alien. It's not scientific!


Apart from that I'd love to recommend a great US novel about a family with people of the same race but with different skincolour and hair quality (fenotypes).

*I don't like the word racism either due to the same reason, it's derived from race and I really think that there ought to be another word in it's place, but for now on I'll stick to it until something better comes up.

Edit: I do Not mean to accuse the individual who came up with the prompt suggestion, I'm sure she used the wording because it's an expression that everyone use in your country, but I do believe it's crucial to Inform about this. I don't want to shame the suggestor.

I know you are correct and I would love to see a change here in the US, but changing anything on the basis of scientific accuracy is highly unlikely in our current political climate.

Is it only the US that uses the term multiracial? Brits, do you use it? Folks from other countries?

Yeah, it’s not a big deal, just more choices! I guess discussions like this are useful so people aren’t confused later when they look for books.

Dixie, You did a great job with this one. There is truly something for everyone. And thank you for including nominees, for some reason I often like them better.

I agree about the word choice. I've given up expecting scientific accuracy in the States and don't expect Canadians will give up American TV, etc, so there are Canadians who use that term as well. However, in Canada demographics aren't done by "race" the way they are in the States.

I do understand the usage of the word "race" in the US, but I don't use it, and I don't want to. There ARE no "human races".

I don't ignore or deny the socio-cultural reality of people being discriminated against - because of their cultural or geographic origins, their religion, language, their gender, or the color of their skin. But all that has nothing to do with any biological "race".

Moreover, in German, the word also means breed - which makes it even worse. So I don't like to use it. It's a terrible concept.

I agree with the wording on this one! Although I do think I will read a Nebula award winner because The Buffalo Hunter Hunter sounds so good. I am going to fit it in next year somewhere so hopefully this gets in.

Just curious, but is not having the ability to contact people who misvote a new thing? I've only just noticed the note on the top post, so just wondering if it was always there and I just didn't see it or if it's new.
