Your mercies are new every morning
As I walked up the porch, I hoped my mother wouldn’t be waiting. I have gone to a party that I specifically told not to go to, but I did. “Hello where have you been?” My mother said. Oh great, she knows as I think of an excuse she starts lecturing me about safety and responsibility. “And as a punishment you are grounded. You can’t leave the house for youth group or sleepovers or any other activities that you are with friends other than school, you can go to Church work in school,” Mom started to continue but I cut her off “what!” I probably woke up the entire neighborhood “go to your room and we’ll talk more in the morning” Mom might have something might as well give me an eternal sentence, cause I am socially dead.

Once I woke up, I thought it was a dream, but when I saw my mother‘s face I knew it was real. “Ready for day one of my sentence” I joke, “go to the laundry then I’ll drive you to Dunkin’ Donuts” Mom said. “What do you mean? I can drive you don’t need to do that.” I say hoping that didn’t mean what I thought it did. “You aren’t allowed to drive until you earn it back” mom stated, my jaw literally dropped to the floor and shattered into a million pieces.

I was sitting at the counter waiting for my favorite customer to walk in, as I started to get ready for her, a tall boy with black curly hair strides in. He looks around and then spots me and walks over that’s when I saw his bright green eyes that looked like they could make any girl fall immediately for him, including me, “Can I have a dozen with three Boston creams, four glazed, four Holliday ones, and one strawberry sprinkle.” He ordered as if memorized it. I started then paused for a second, wait this is Callie’s usual order. “Are you related to Callie Dailey?” he looked up like he was surprised that I knew that and that she’d told me about him. “Umm yes, I’m her son Avery” he said quietly. Why was this boy so quiet, once I finished he paid and left just like that.

Ooh this looks really good! I would say just add more punctuation. If the thought is completed, put an ending mark. And instead of a huge block of text, try adding more paragraphs (every time someone different speaks or every time a character starts a new action or when the words don’t relate to the previous words, add a new paragraph). Other than that I think it was pretty good. Make sure to keep me updated! Are you planning to publish once you finish cuz I was thinking I could create a section to talk about how everyone publishes their books, whether that’s self publishing or through a publisher. But I will definitely buy a copy if you do!

Hi Tris!
You pulled me right into this story. I'd be interested to read more! Also, kudos to her mom for actually doing all that driving, that made me feel tired just thinking about it lol.

A quick note: I don't know who 'I' is in the story. That is the one downside to first person. Maybe her (the main character's but I don't know her name) mom can say the main character's name?

I'll second too what Presley said about starting a new paragraph for dialogue. I really enjoyed the dialogue you wrote! Every time a different person says something, it should start a new paragraph. I've included a quick edit below of what it would look like, and I added some punctuation.

I hope you post more because now I want to know what's going to happen with Avery!!!

That’s when my boss came up to me. “Crista you have to pay attention to the customers not whatever is in your head”
My cheek are on fire and look the same, I look around and spot him Lincon a boy that goes to my co-op.
As he walks up I start blushing even more if that’s possible. “Hey Crista can I have the smallest munchkin please?” He says politely.
As I get it for him he leans on the counter saying. “Do you want to go to the movies soon?” He is asking.
“Umm I’m grounded so I’m blaming my mom” I try to sound cool but sound exhausted. I try to got as fast as I can so I can get out of this moment.
As he walks out him smiles and waves. My friend Lilly that happens to work with me starts talking to me. “Crista you didn’t tell me that you like Lincon” Lilly about yelled.
I love Lilly but she gets on my nerves so much sometimes. Before I can start telling her I didn’t Avery walked in with Callie this time.
“Hi Crista how are you? Sorry I didn’t see you this morning I sent in Avery instead.” She was about to go on then Avery cut her off.
“Mom stop annoying her let’s order and get home I still have homework.” Avery was saying. Wait! Callie never misses talking to me. She’s trying to set me up.
“Hi Callie I’m good how are you? Also stop trying to set me up with your son.” Is what I wanted to say. Instead I said “I’m good how are you? And let me guess a strawberry refresher?”

I was homeschooled too! Although a few more years ago than you! lol And I totally plan to homeschool my kids one day too.

If you are looking for Christian Teen Romance, you might like Melissa Knight or Andrea Perez, When I was reading your story, it reminded me a little of them. Knight has several modern high school romances (Feelin' the Chemistry), but she always has her main character strive to have healthy relationships with member of the opposite sex, even if the main character didn't in the past. And Perez has a couple of modern teen romances about formula one racing (Racing the Boys), which is pretty unique, but it's obvious that she knows what she's talking about with cars. Perez is also KJV only too. I have had interactions with both authors, and they are really nice and want to glorify God with their writing. If you need any content info., let me know.

Christina Shaw | 64 comments Presley wrote: "I know it’s always so hard to find good Christian books. That’s also why I want to become an author."

I agree! But there are a LOT of Christians writing fiction out there. The problem is that they are often publishing independently or are not well known. I posted a request for YA/MG Christian authors who are still living and writing in two different groups and from the responses I received I discovered over 350 authors, most I did not know!

Now, it does depend on how you define 'good Christian books' because everyone has preferences and lines they don't want crossed and some lines are much broader than others.

message 18: by Presley (new)

Presley Was Here | 511 comments Mod
That’s true, my preference is fantasy or sci fi so I guess other people could say they don’t like those either. But I know some Christian authors include so much crap into their books that should not be classified as Christian.
I also want to become an author to glorify God in my work and I hope that people could get saved from some of my future books. And it’s always fun to write fictional characters 🤪

“Would you like anything Avery?” I ask hiding my heart with that one sentence. “Yes please, may I have an ice coffee?”

message 32: by Presley (new)

Presley Was Here | 511 comments Mod
The only mistake I saw was no commas. When directly addressing a person, use a comma before and after their name. Here’s a few examples:

If the name is at the end of a sentence, put the comma only before. “Good morning, Sarah.”

If the name is at the beginning of the sentence, put the comma after the name. “Sarah, how is your morning?”

And if the name is in the middle of the sentence, put commas both before and after. “Hey, Sarah, how is your morning?”

And this doesn’t apply to every single time a name is used, only when clearly addressing the person. Hope this helps!

Nice continuation of the story! Lilly is fun!

On grammar and specifically for dialogue, whenever a new person starts to talk, it is a new paragraph. And there is always punctuation inside the quotations, like '"I'm grounded," I explain.'

But the plot thickens! Can Callie get Crista's mom to let Crista do something?!? I hope you get more writing down while you're having fun on the beach!!

“Go to your room and we’ll talk more in the morning” Mom might as well give me an eternal sentence, cause I am socially dead.

Once I woke up, I thought it was a dream, but when I saw my mother‘s face I knew it was real. “Ready for day one of my sentence” I joke.

I was sitting at the counter waiting for my favorite customer, Callie, to walk in, as I started to get ready for her, a tall boy with black curly hair strides in.
He looks around and then spots me and walks over. That’s when I saw his bright green eyes that looked like they could make any girl fall immediately for him, including me.
“Can I have a dozen with three Boston creams, four glazed, four Holliday ones, and one strawberry sprinkle.” He ordered as if it was memorized.
I started then paused for a second, wait this is Callie’s usual order. “Are you related to Callie Dailey?” he looked up like he was surprised that I knew.
“Umm yes, I’m her son Avery” he said quietly. Why was this boy so quiet, once I finished he paid and left just like that.

“Hey Lilly” she says as she waves. “Crista time to go, also I have to talk to you about something”
Oh no… I have listened, thrown a couple sarcastic comments but nothing else. I realize this is a talk about something Callie said. “Okaaaay” I say, I wonder what Callies planning.
Once Mom starts the car she starts explaining what she was talking about. “So Callie said that she thought your love life is pathetic. Also that she wants you over to help her set her WiFi up.”
So Callie’s going through with it. “And you will go help her” Mom finished quickly thinking I would interpret her.
“But Callie wanted to do something in return. So she, Avery, and you are going to a movie after.” Mom stated in a tone meaning there was absolutely no way of getting out of this.
I was about to try to get out of this to realize that I don’t want to. “Okay, sounds good. Hey mom can we please talk about something?” I try to sound casual but that ship sailed a LONG time ago.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩

As I cook some ‘sprinkle party’ pancakes, pancakes that have sprinkles in them (my sisters are obsessed with Gabby’s Dollhouse), once I flip the last one the door bell rings.
I slide around our house in my socks to see Avery at the door.
“Umm, hi?” I say as I open the door. He has a look of surprise and astonishment? Why do I look that bad?
“Hi” he says curtly. Wow this boy is quiet. That’s when I realize it. I’m in CHRISTMAS PJ’S in the middle of October.
“I… umm… I, just come in and you can have a pancake. I just made them let me get dressed” I say before he can say anything else.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩

Once I get dressed I come back out to find Iris my 8 year old sister and Lila my other 8 year old sister, there twins, talking to Avery.
“Once Crista was making eggs for us and somehow cooked the yoke but not the whites!” Iris was telling him.
“Iris I was 9 you had just started solids. B E Q U I E T.” I was trying to defend myself but that wasn’t working out.
“Before you two start a cat fight. Crista eat…” before Lila could finish I cut her off. “How do I know Iris didn’t poison it?” Lila must have got Moms personality because she continued as if I said nothing “PROTEIN! Before you destroy Iris. Iris come with me to talk about when to tell stories about Crista”
“Why are you so smart Lila?” I ask with as much sarcasm I can muster. When the twins walk away Avery starts talking.
“So my mom told me to pick you up for WiFi setup. And if you didn’t already know she’s trying to set us up” he added nonchalant.
As I think of a come back Avery takes my hand say something I didn’t think he could say. “You are an amazing person an even more beautiful than you are sweet”.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩

Once we get there I have a song stuck in my head. I start to mutter the lyrics to Nothing Like The Movies by BookTok under my breath.
For a second I thought I heard Avery’s breath catch. Then I run out of lyrics so I start repeating it.
“Crista,” he said hesitantly like he thought I was about to run away. “do you like reading?” Why does he act like I’m about to yell.
Then I remember. Why he’s so close with Callie and his little brother Eric. His father.
“Yes, I love to read.” I say trying not to trigger any uncomfortable thoughts. “I also love music, gaming, crafting, swimming, and TALKING!”
It starts as a chuckle then is laughing so hard I join in. “Now you” I pry trying to learn more about the boy that takes up my space in my brain for gaming (it is quite annoying).
“Uhhh, I like romance, sci-fi, and dystopian.” Avery only describes books.
“Same but what kind of Music” I continue to pry trying to learn more.

When he says something it’s not what I expected, “Okay now I have to do this I like all the same music as you and I love the Bluey music”
When he finishes he starts to cringe but as I don’t make fun of him he looks at me with a sweet look in his eyes. “Why aren’t you making fun of me?” He asked trying to sound like a joke but he can’t hide it from me.

Once we stopped, I thought we had arrived at Callie‘s house. Instead when I looked up I found out. We were at the movie theater.
As I was silently screaming Callie walked up. “Hey Crista I actually figured out how to do my WiFi.” She was about to continue but I stopped her.
“That’s great I guess I’m going home now.” I said in a joking tone because I knew that wasn’t going to ever happen.
“Haha you are hysterical Crista. What do you want to watch?” She replied, fast as if she knew I was gonna make a comment about it.
“Anything clean.” I said clearly telling the truth.
That made her super excited. “Time to broaden your horizons.” She said with a little too much enthusiasm.
When we walked in I saw that they were doing a replay of the entire The Amazing Digital Circus series. I saw it and immediately perked up.
Callie of course noticed and say what I was looking at. “You know it?” She said with a questioning look.
“You do?” I replied hoping that this is what she ment about broadening my horizons.
“Three tickets to TADC” she said when we made it to the checkout line. “Umm, that’s not the best show for a date.” The cashier answered.
My face turned into a tomato. “We,” I pointed between me and Avery “are not dating.” as I said that Avery kept nodding.
