By popular need - er - demand, Fall Into Smut is BACK!

Runs October 1, 2026 through December 20th, 2026 - just to be sure we capture those smutty witchy books and Christmas Cowboy romances.

This is pure silly fun. It's all about reading trashy romances of any kind -- even those that end with nothing more than a 'really good kiss' as Peter Jackson says about Aragorn and Arwen's long awaited reunion after Sauron's defeat and Aragorn's crowned king. There is no smut level minimum! In fact, I tested out a Smut Level Rating system during Christmas in July, shared in Message#2. Feel free to make up your own and post it as a guide for all.

There are no points, no page minimums, no tags - though I believe we can give some real help to those still struggling with some of those Grab Tags, You don't even have to link or share your review. All you do is pull out a smutty romance or three to read then report back here on what you read, how it was as a smutty - or not - romance, and oh, particularly good or amusing metaphors.

Take a deep dive into your TBR - or someone else's - and see what you find. Any genre will do. Since I did not have the time to create the highlights reel I planned, to help guide your reading, here are 2025 Fall Into Smut Link and Inaugural Fall Into Smut Link.

Smut rating: Use❤️‍🔥 a flaming heart

❤️‍🔥 - nothing graphic, except possibly one kiss at the end - often called 'sweet' or 'clean' romance - Christian ones too
❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 - hot kisses, some fondling, suggestion that heading to intimacy/bed or have been intimate, no details.
❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 - now have moved to full on intimacy but no details of the intimacy - closed door.
❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥- full details of one or two intimate encounters, often but not always in the last couple of chapters

Note: if any thing too bizarre - crotch snakes come to mind from an Omegaverse tagged book - is an automatic loss of a ❤️‍🔥in the smut rating. Maybe as many as two.

I actually started a Fall Into Smut shelf at some point -- probably last fall. So I've got some books already identified there from my TBR. But I have loads in ebook and even print to pull from.

I also have a couple that are for a TBR Trim Challenge in another group --- there turn from my TBR came up. But I am quite sure none will get past a ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥. They are good romance books, just not really smutty romances.

What's everyone planning? Are you planning? Feel free to pose questions about a books content or tags or smut level. Someone might be able to provide guidance.

However, I do have some studly dog reads which should do a bit better.

I have How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf lined up waiting for October.
The cover isn't sexy, but it promises to be smutty and spicy.

I just lined up a Jill Shalvis - she usually is good for some spicy smut or smutty spice!

I will definitely be participating.

I can recommend two series for smut that isn't not yucky. The first is the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J. R. Ward. It's perfect for Fall Flurries, too. The main characters are sexy vampires. The storyline is interesting and the characters are so well written. If you like audios, the series is narrated by Jim Frangione, the same man who narrates the Chet and Bernie mysteries. He does a phenomenal job. Start with the first book in the series Dark Lover. I may reread some of my favorites.......

If you are looking for something short and with a mystery feel to it, try the Mindf*ck series, by S. T. Abby There are only five and the first one is The Risk . The premise is the revenge that Lana takes on the men who gang raped her and left her for dead ten years ago. She falls for the FBI agent who is tracking her. It has some sections with graphic violence so it might not appeal to most of you. I skipped over it but it's definitely not a YA book.

I looked at my remaining tags, and it appears I managed to grab the spicy ones early in the year. Still, mc and bdsm should put me in play for this fun activity.
I might have started already, with my harlequin book, The Iron King but I think it will have a rather low smut rating because I'm at about 64% point and they still haven't kissed. I do enjoy the double-entendre from Kagawa, because I'm sure they are not accidental:

I've been surprised to see just how many of the tags on the Grab Tag list are secret synonyms for romance. In fact, I think it might have been possible to complete the whole challenge with nothing but romance!

Billionaire? There are more billionaire romances than actual billionaires in the world.

Hockey? I'm not even sure hockey is played in any of these books.

Age Gap? Some of these look pretty icky - "Dad/teenage daughter's friend" does nothing for me.

Mafia? Romance; MC? Romance; Single Parent? Romance

Omegaverse? I'm renaming "OMG-verse". It takes some effort for me to reject an entire genre, but Omegaverse just vaulted past High (yawn) Fantasy as my least favorite genre. (Theresa - I'm happy to see we're deducting ❤️‍🔥's for crotch snakes!)

I thought the same. Or maybe all it shows is how broad the romance genre universe is.

The one other genre I have often thought is similar is crime fiction - and I often lean in to crime fiction for promots and tags.

And of COURSE there had to be a demerit!

Definitely using this as an incentive to smash some of the remaining Grab Tags though a glut of smut earlier in the year got me through most of them.

final smut rating ❤️‍🔥 : a little tame but fun.

I'm reading Carl's Doomsday Scenario, not smut by any stretch of the imagination - well not real smut - but Level 3 of the adventure provides some hilarious moments, like this one with Princess Donut's manager Mordecai, who is also her and Carl's guildmaster:

Mordecai teleported into the room, standing just to the side of the main bar. He stood with his pants down to his knees, eyes closed. “Now ladies,” he said, his voice slurring heavily. “One at a time. Grannie first. There’s plenty of Mordecai to…” He trailed off. He opened an eye, looking upon us. “My good sir, I must ask you sheath your sword immediately!” the Bopca cried. “This is a family establishment!” I glanced over at the gnome. His name was Gordo. Mordecai quickly pulled up his pants. He was still in his tuxedo, but the tie and jacket were gone. His barbed tail got caught on the edge of his belt, and he couldn’t pull them up all the way. He awkwardly fed the tail through the pants and fastened himself. He stood there, swaying. I could smell the alcohol wafting off of him. It’d been twenty minutes since we left him. Twenty minutes.

As a manager Mordecai is a shapeshifter whose form while manager is that of an incubus -- male succubus. If you smut fans don't know what that means, Google it.

I expect much more very mildly smutty fun before I finish this one.

Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman - ❤️‍🔥 - this is accidentally - and humorously - smut but worthy of being included here. The best quote was the one I already posted in previous comment but the background: On level 3, after Carl chooses his race and acquires various prizes, skills, a hobby, and more, he learns that the 'floor', which is called Open City, will include those creations who find him sexually attractive and his enchanted boxer shorts may cause his body to respond in various ways. HILARIOUS! Also, the 2nd half of the book includes solving a quest involving the murder of prostitutes. Oh, and when they go 'clubbing' in a medium sized town, there are separate rooms for those liking women and those liking men that are billed as strip joints but seem to be more like brothels.

I kid you not.

I'm loving Carl and Princess Donut's adventures - I've got book 2 on my list to read this month, but book 3 looks like it'll be fun!

I finished my first Fall Into Smut book for the season, and it was extra smutty! I may need to read a slow-burn, fade-to-black sort of book to balance this one out!

Welcome to the Dark Side

I picked this up for the Age Gap, MC (Motorcycle Club) and Mafia tags, so no surprise this book was extra explicit.

The main characters met when he was 26 and she was (gulp) 7. I had a pause there and considered DNFing the book, but then the author sent Zeus to prison while the heroine grew up. (Yes, his name was Zeus for crying out loud.) They became penpals while Zeus was in prison, and developed a fairly sweet father/daughter relationship.

When their paths met much later, he tried to keep his distance, but she wasn't having it.

No good euphemisms to share. These characters would have laughed in the face of any euphemism, and then shot it in the face for good measure.

But there were plenty of scenes where she called him Daddy (just ewwwww). They end up getting married...she has to go back to high school the next day because Yep! she's that young. There's also a sex scene under the bleachers with the heroine in her cheerleading outfit.

I liked the story and the characters, but this is clearly not the romance sub-genre for me.

Don't forget to mention the AI with a foot fetish that keeps Carl going barefoot through all the levels of the world dungeon. I'm sure there are some quotes or some curses related to the subject

Oh yes, AI foot fetish and passion for Carl's bare tootsies - not so mentioned in 2nd in series Carl's Doomsday Scenario as in the first in the series but a couple of priceless moments (and of course, part of their high scores and popularity with viewers is Carl's boxers, physique and oh those feet and tootsies! It's also not just Carl that AI has a foot fetish about. There's a moment when AI is describing what an incubus is and looks like -- and they are rhapsodic about the narrow white graceful feet they have.

Early on, Carl is choosing his character etc.:
I focused on the line of the three AI-recommended choices and laughed. Hobgoblin Human And Sasquatch “Huh, that’s odd,” Mordecai said. “I’ve never seen the system recommend the existing race before.” “The AI loves Carl’s tootsies,” Donut said.

Then there's the time Carl, when all are discussing what they are going to shop for since there are now stores on Level 3, says outloud his intention to buy pants. AI was having NONE of that! They reward him soon after with a magic enchantment that increases the protective and other magical qualities of whatever enchanted articles he's wearing. WIthout thinking it through and reading the fine print, he applies the charm and his Enchanted BigBoi Boxers (a fan gift he received in Book 1 to replace his quickly wearing out boxers) become not only more protective but if he covers them up with another layer of clothing, they lose their armor effect. Carl is NOT HAPPY.

But as the name implies, this benefit allows only a single layer of armor or clothing to cover your crotch area. And since you’re already wearing these, it looks like you won’t be getting trousers anytime soon. ... “Oh this is delicious. Positively delicious!” Donut said. “Don’t worry, Carl. Maybe the next box will contain leather chaps. You can still wear those. Those would really frame out your feet.” She looked up at the ceiling. “Can you imagine how sexy Carl would be in chaps?”

No chaps have appeared ... yet.

I am not at all prudish. But if this is the top of the MC list, I am never ever bloody ever reading an MC romance again. Those bikers can f* off. In fact they can f* right off. And when they get there, they can f* off some more.

The author can definitely write though. There’s some nice snarky commentary. I particularly warmed to this one:

I knew he wasn’t around for all of October and most of November, although he reappeared at the Thanksgiving party, slinking around the Armory like a half-drowned cat, all grumpy and defensive. The rest of the club seemed to ignore it, so I did too. It was okay. Not quite as good as castrating him with a dull spoon would have been, but life is all about compromises, right?

I am in a similar quandary with my bdsm pick: the smut rating doesn't go high enough. I chose Backstage Pass based only on the fact that I like the rock scene and the book has decent enough ratings here, but I'm only a couple of chapters in and the action is already straying into straight pornography.
I took a break (and a cold shower) and I might get back to the book, because it does have a sense of humour, of the crude and explicit sort and it does have something to say about consent and technique, if the reader can get over the voyeuristic discomfort.
I'm not sure I can pick less explicit quotes, but they can also be hysterical. Let's see ...

I like MC books but none are even close to those high rating ones. Most can't even be found in the first 25 pages.

I still haven't picked my MC book, mostly because nothing appeals on those first 25 pages. They all look zombified, leave your brains at the entrance sort of romance, based on the blurbs.
Having thrashed the whole subgenre, I admit that Streets of Fire is one of my all time favorite pulp movies. I would love to read something like that.

mc and harry potter might be the last tags I grab this year.

The Black Nights Inc. series by Julia Ann Walker are MC military black ops thrillers with some smutty romance set in a motorcycle shop - or that's the cover for their real biz. Not borderline porn, real plots, real emotions Most as I recall have MC tags. Try first one: Hell on Wheels 82 MC tags. Note the tame clothed male cover .

I read these long before on GR so I have no reviews or ratings.

This book has exactly one kiss, near the end of the book. But as the first book in the series, it's clearly going to be a sloooooow burn sort of romance.

I'm looking forward to the next book - but it'll be a while, since I'm still working my way through my remaining romance-related Grab Tags.

The Seven Year Slip

This was a very cute love story, with a magical, time-traveling New York apartment playing a key role.

The romance was very much in the "...fade to black..." style - nothing explicit outside of a few kisses. They did much more than kiss, but all "off camera".

A very fun story, it reminded me of the New York "rom com" movies that used to be so common.

I seem destined to read humorous Smut Lite this month. But I really enjoyed a certain use of euphemism in Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher - 4.5 stars but only ❤️‍🔥 smut rating - kisses and a closed door in the last chapter or two.

But this just cracked me up:

“Bodyguards and their charges spend a great deal of time in close quarters,” Javier said, still staring at the milkweed. “It’s, uh, something of a cliché that some of them will … uh.” “Ohhh.” I could feel a blush starting. Aaron thought that? Shouldn’t Javier have set him straight? “That kind of … uh. But of course you and I aren’t … uhh-ing. At all.” “Right,” said Javier. “No uh.”
...
I looked down at myself. I was wearing a perfectly respectable nightgown. Javier was wearing breeches. Just breeches. “There hasn’t been any uh,” he said. I swallowed a few times and reminded myself that I was done with trying to be tactful. Then I met his eyes squarely and said, “Would you like there to be?”
For the record, it is not easy to make love to a man with badly bruised ribs.
Afterward, we lay around with the hazy smiles of people who had just uhhh-ed.

It may make it to the Highlights Reel.

I haven't read a Regency romance in a while - I forgot how much I love these! The fashions, the manners, and SO MUCH TEA! I definitely drank my share of tea during this book, how could I not?

Most of the book was a slow simmering, one-❤️‍🔥 sort of book. But then it steamed right up to ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥.

Sadly, no euphemisms - this book takes the modern approach of providing accurate anatomical terms - a very unromantic development in my opinion!

Yep - I didn't mind, but I do love it when the author brings some imagination to the descriptions.

Did not expect to get any good smutty euphemism from The Fated Sky, the 2nd in Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut alternate history scifi series, but just shows you never to say never.

Elma and her husband Nathanial are having a little time together before Elma leaves again, this time for a 3 year manned expedition to Mars. They get distracted while preparing dinner and after settling by each other and discussing how to pass cyphered messages to each other secretly while she's in space:

“I don’t get to see you be stupid very often without thrust involved.” I slid my hand down to his trousers to see if launch conditions had been met. Not yet. Which meant that I needed to prime the fuel cells.
“Well … You mentioned the reports. What if I could give you private reports?” Nathaniel rolled up onto his elbow. “Private reports, you say.”
...
“Ah…” I pushed myself up on my elbow so I could kiss him.
“But if they don’t see the code,
Nathaniel stared at me for a moment—or, rather, he stared in my direction.
His focus snapped back, then he smiled and bent forward to kiss me. His mouth was warm and still tasted a little of gin. Elsewhere, thrusters came online and we were go for launch.

These space euphemisms pop up later ... in the secret cypher messages they send buried in the nonsense coding at the beginning and end of the teletype official communications sent between Earth and space ship.

Makes it to a ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥smut rating and entertaining euphemism.

Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning ; 2 stars but your mileage might vary.

Doctor Myrna Evans is bored and tired, after presenting a paper at her medical conference. All she wants is a nightcap and an early sleep, alone in her hotel room. Then she spots in the lobby a group of delinquent yet criminally attractive men. She recognizes the members of the popular metal band Sinners .
One thing leading to another, Myrna gets invited backstage to their concerts, with the band leader, Brian Sinclair, hot on her tail.

It's a fun book, but it feels like the author tried to find out how many hot, explicit sex scenes she can shoehorn into one book. Myrna is introduced as a doctor in psychology, bit I feel that her degree is like one of those nurse uniforms in a porn movie, something to take off so the banging can start.
Still, the dialogue is often hilariously smutty.

“I thought we were going to spend today together.”
He grinned at her sleepily. “So why are you out of bed and dressed?”

“Deeper? Are you trying to bruise her liver?

"After he swallowed my banana and I forced him to consume my fluids.”

Very cute romance The Book Witch

Rainy is a book witch who can hop in and out of books at will. All is going well, but then she falls in love with the Duke of Chicago. He's an actual English Duke who gave up the aristocratic life to become a private detective in Chicago.

No smut AT ALL - everything aside from a couple of kisses takes place off camera and off the page. So I'd rate this with 1 ❤️‍🔥

Continuing my exploration of the barely smutty reads, cozy fantasy book:The Enchanted Greenhouse|217388100] includes magic, sentient plants, a winged cat, tiny pollinating dragons, enchantment galore, but no real smut - just hot kisses, longings, and a final consummation completely off screen - a single ❤️‍🔥.

Closest thing to a euphemism was this: She had kissed and been kissed before, but never like this, like she was the most precious jewel in all the Crescent Islands.

Oh and his baking and cooking is basically a love language.

It's looking very much as if my October reading is only single ❤️‍🔥smut level. I'm not even going to get to the 3 autumn books -- and one is specifically and clearly set in October --- before end of month. Just means I won't get to use the books for October Flurries.

Eh, The Enchanted Greenhouse was clearly set in November and December with snow and an ending on the Winter Solstice, so I missed that Flurry read as well.

Glad I made Fall Into Smut run into December! I'll probably overcompensate for my minimally smutty October with my November and/or December reading.

When I picked this book up for the Marvel tag, I would have never guessed there would be anything smut-worthy to report here.

Deadpool, Vol. 3: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was not any sort of romance, but there was certainly a very smutty scene.

I almost cringed when I saw where the story was going, and the female character starting to take her clothes off. Just how graphic was this going to get? Isn't the audience for this stuff 14-year-old boys? I was almost afraid to turn the page...

So no one was shown fully undresseed. In fact the scene in question didn't include the characters at all. Instead it was a series of pictures. Just comic book style pictures, no words.

First was a picture of a beaver. (OK, yes the audience is in fact 14 year old boys 🙄)

Then a golf ball making hole in one, a gun in a holster.

Then I guess things got a little spicier: a picture that I think was supposed to come from the Kama Sutra just based on the unlikely number of arms and legs, a cat-o-nine-tails (!), a freight train entering a tunnel, a lava lamp, and finally a rocketship taking off.

Also in keeping with the 14 year old boy audience, the whole thing took less than a full page.

The book itself gets zero ❤️'s, but that one scene was a good 4 or 5 ❤️‍🔥's. I think using pictures to stand in for euphemisms was pretty creative.

It doesn't earn those 5 flaming hearts just for explicit imaginative very spicy scenes. It got those 5 flaming hearts when very very early on you learned Sol our dragon hunk has 2 cocks! Described as an upper and lower and yes how those are ... engaged ... is quite hot actually. Briar thinks so for sure.

But that is not all. Sol's dragon tail is prehensile and oh does he know how to use it - for Briar's comfort and pleasure. Then there is the use he puts to his long forked tongue ...
