Level 2: 41-70 Tasks October 1,2026 - 9/30/2027
Level 3: 71 or more Tasks October 1, 2026 - 5/31/2028

Each task can be done as often as needed.

TASKS

1. Salem, Massachusetts was founded in 1626, and is one of the oldest European settlements in New England, predating Boston. The most notorious chapter of Salem’s history occurred between February 1692 and May 1693. Triggered by mass hysteria, political instability, religious extremism, and local family rivalries, the community turned on itself and the witch trials started.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book set in Massachusetts or read a book where there is a trial or tagged as history.

2. Cotton Mather was a powerful Puritan minister, author, and intellectual whose writings heavily fueled and sustained the Salem Witch Trials. While he never served as a judge, his religious authority gave the court immense legitimacy. His actions and publications directly defended the execution of innocent people.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is an author, or a character who is a judge or a character who is powerful.

3. The hysteria began in January 1692 when the young daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris fell ill with mysterious fits. Under intense pressure to name their tormentors, they pointed fingers at three marginalized women who had little social standing to defend themselves
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where the MC has a daughter or with a character who is a religious figure (Reverend, rabbi, or somthing like that) or with a character called Samuel.

4. More than 200 people were accused of dealing with the Devil. 20 people were executed. Nineteen were hanged at Proctor's Ledge, and one elderly man, was pressed to death with heavy stones for refusing to enter a plea. At least five others died in brutal, disease-ridden prison cells.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book that is 20th in a series or where a character is in prison or where the authors initials can be found in PROCTORS LEDGE.

5. Public opinion turned against the unfair trials by autumn. Governor Phips banned spectral evidence and shut down the special court in October 1692. A new court handled remaining cases without spectral evidence, and Phips pardoned and released all remaining prisoners by May 1693. Massachusetts formally apologized for the tragedy in the 20th century, and cleared the names of the last remaining victims in the early 2000s.
🧙‍♀️Read a book published in 2000 or a book published in October any year or where a character apologizes for something.

The Accused who were executed
6. Sarah Good was a destitute, pregnant beggar who was widely disliked in Salem for cursing at neighbors who refused her charity. She steadfastly maintained her innocence. Before she was hanged on July 19, 1692, she famously screamed from the gallows to the prosecuting minister, Nicholas Noyes: "I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink!" (Noyes later died of a hemorrhage, choking on his own blood).
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is innocent or with blood on the cover or a character who is good (Your interpretation).

7. Bridget Bishop was a sharp-tongued tavern owner known for dressing in flashy clothing (including a famous scarlet bodice) and having a history of domestic disputes. Because of her non-conformist lifestyle and a prior, unproven witchcraft accusation years earlier, she was an easy target. She became the first person to be tried, convicted, and hanged on June 10, 1692.
🧙‍♀️Read a book where a character works at a bar or a character who wears flashy clothes or a character called Bridget.

9. Rebecca Nurse was a 71-year-old, deeply religious grandmother and one of Salem's most respected citizens. Her accusation shocked the community. During her trial, 39 neighbors risked their own safety to sign a petition testifying to her saintly character. The jury initially found her "not guilty," but the judge and the screaming, convulsing afflicted girls pressured the jury into changing their verdict. She was hanged on July 19, 1692.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with the numbers 3 or 9 in the page count or where a character signs a petition or a character who is respected.

10. Reverend George Burroughs was the only Puritan minister accused and executed during the trials. He had served as Salem Village’s minister years prior and left over bitter salary disputes. The afflicted girls accused him of being the "Ring-Leader" of the witches. At the gallows, Burroughs shocked the crowd by perfectly reciting the Lord’s Prayer a feat Puritans firmly believed a witch was incapable of doing. The crowd wept and nearly stopped the execution, but cotton Mather intervened, insisting the Devil could take the form of an angel of light. Burroughs was hanged immediately after.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character leaves a job or where a character cries where the authors initials can be found LORDS PRAYER.

11. John Proctor was a wealthy, outspoken tavern owner and farmer who openly scoffed at the trials, calling the afflicted girls frauds. When his pregnant wife, Elizabeth, was accused, John stood by her and defended her fiercely. In retaliation, the girls accused him as well. He was hanged on August 19, 1692.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character is a farmer or with a character called John or with a character who is a fraud.

12. Martha Corey was a pious member of the church who vocalized strong skepticism about the trials, even hiding the saddle of her husband, Giles, to stop him from participating. Her defiance caused the girls to target her, and she was hanged on September 22, 1692—the last woman to be executed in Salem.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book published in September of any year or with the word saddle in the text (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #) or where a character is defiant.

13. Samuel Wardwell was one of the few men executed, Wardwell was a carpenter who had dabbled in telling fortunes in his youth. Under extreme pressure, he confessed to witchcraft to save his life. However, struck by guilt for lying, he bravely recanted his confession. Because he withdrew his confession and insisted on his innocence, he was promptly convicted and hanged on September 22, 1692.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is a carpenter or a character who is brave or where a character feels guilty.

14. Giles Corey was an 80-year-old farmer and husband to Martha Corey. Originally swept up in the fervor, he turned against the courts when his wife was arrested. He was subsequently accused. Corey knew that if he stood trial, he would inevitably be found guilty, and his large estate would be legally stripped from his family. He chose to stand mute, refusing to enter a plea of "guilty" or "not guilty."To force a plea, the court subjected him to peine forte et dure. He was laid on the ground while heavy stones were progressively stacked on his chest. He withstood the agonizing torture for two days without uttering a plea. His famous last words, gasped out to his torturers, were simply, "More weight." He died on September 19, 1692, and his land successfully passed to his sons-in-law.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character is tortured or where children inherit land from a parent or where the authors initials can be found in FORTE ET DURE.

15. Elizabeth Howe was a kind, well-liked woman who was targeted primarily due to a decade-long grudge held by a neighboring family. They blamed her for the illness of their daughter and the mysterious deaths of their livestock. Despite her brother-in-law and husband testifying to her gentle, Christian character, she was condemned.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character called Elizabeth or tagged Christian or where two characters have a long time grudge.

16. Susannah Martin was a fierce, outspoken widow from Amesbury who had successfully fought off a previous witchcraft accusation years earlier. When her accusers threw themselves into dramatic fits in the courtroom, Susannah famously laughed out loud. When asked why she laughed, she replied that she could not help it at such "folly." Her refusal to act intimidated or submissive sealed her fate
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character laughs or a character who refuses to be intimidated or a character who is a widow.

17. Sarah Wildes was a woman who had a reputation for non-conformity in the highly rigid Puritan society. Years earlier, she had been sentenced to a public whipping for wearing a silk scarf (a violation of local modesty laws) and was frequently caught up in local legal disputes, making her an easy target when the hysteria spread.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character wears a scarf or a character who is non corformist or where the authors initials can be found in PURITAN.

18. Martha Carrier was a defiant woman who refused to yield to her interrogators. She was so intensely hated and feared by her neighbors that Cotton Mather labeled her a "rampant hag" and the "Queen of Hell." When the afflicted girls screamed that she was biting them in court, Martha fiercely yelled back at the judges, "It is a shameful thing that you should mind these folks that are out of their wits!"
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is hated or feared or a character who yells or where a character gets bitten.

19. George Jacobs Sr was an 80-year-old grandfather who walked with two canes. He openly laughed at his accusers in court, declaring, "You tax me for a wizard! You may as well tax me for a buzzard!" Tragically, his own granddaughter, Margaret, was terrified into confessing and testifying against him. Though she later recanted her lie in tears, the judges refused to spare him.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a grandfather as a character or where someone lies or where a character cries.

20. John Willard was a local deputy constable who was initially responsible for arresting the accused. As the body count rose, Willard grew disgusted by the injustice and refused to make any more arrests. The moment he spoke out against the court, the afflicted girls turned on him, accusing him of witchcraft and the murder of a local man.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a murder or with a character who is a local cop or where a character is disgusted with something.

21. Martha Eastey was the sister of former hanged Rebecca Nurse. Eastey was a deeply religious, well-respected mother of 11 and the wife of a local farmer, Isaac Eastey. In court, the girls claimed Eastey's spirit was pinching them. When Mary clenched her hands or tilted her head, the girls mimicked the movements, screaming that she was trying to break their necks. Initially, magistrates found insufficient evidence and released her. However, just days later, the girls suffered renewed fits. At midnight, Eastey was torn from her bed, chained, and thrown back into prison. On September 9, 1692, Mary was condemned to death. Realizing her fate was sealed, she authored a famous, heart-wrenching petition to the judges. Rather than begging for her own life, she selflessly argued for the lives of others
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a MC who has a sister or who begs for someone else to be spared something (Your interpretation) or where a character is released from prison.

22. Alice Parker was an innocent ordinary Salem Town resident who was married to a local fisherman named John Parker, with whom she lived on the Salem Harbor waterfront. Because of her sharp, forthright, and sometimes aggressive manner of speaking, she easily fell prey to neighborly disputes and superstitious gossip. She was accused of sinking a ship, drowning a boy, cursing neighbors after disputes and attending a Bloody Sacarement (Witches Sabbath).
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with water on the cover or a character who is agressive or where a character is drowned.

23 Mary Ayer Parker was a 55-year-old widow from Andover, Massachusetts, who was convicted of witchcraft. Her case is noted by historians as a tragic example of mistaken identity and legal chaos, as she was arrested, tried, and executed in less than a single month. Mary strongly maintained her innocence and directly told the magistrates: "I know nothing of it. There is another woman of the same name in Andover including her sister in-law who was mentally instable.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character called Mary or with a character who is mentally instable or a character who has a sister in-law.

24 Ann Pudeator was a wealthy, twice-widowed septuagenarian. Working as a nurse and midwife, her relative financial independence mader her an easy target for local paranoia. Ann was arrested in May 1692 after being accused of witchcraft by prominent "afflicted" girls. testimonies levied against her included[forcing girls to sign the Devil's book, causing the death of a constable’s wife and her second husband's first wife and possessing "witchcraft materials" (which Ann insisted was just grease for making soap).
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character signs something or a character who has been married twice or more or where the word soap can be found in the text (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #).

25 Wilmot Redd was the only person from Marblehead, Massachusetts, to be executed during the Salem witch trials. Wilmot lived a modest life with her husband, Samuel Redd, a local fisherman. Brought to Ingersoll’s Tavern in Salem Village on May 31, Redd faced the accusers. The young girls immediately fell into violent fits in her presence. When asked by magistrates why she thought the girls were suffering, Redd simply remarked, "I cannot tell," and later added, "My opinion is they are in a sad condition."
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character works or owns a tavern or bar, or a character who has fits or where the authors initials can be found in MARBLEHEAD.

26 Margaret Scott was an elderly widow from Rowley, Massachusetts. Because of her age, extreme poverty, and family tragedies, historians view her as a "textbook" target for witchcraft accusations in 17th-century New England. [ Her husband, Benjamin Scott, died in 1671 and left her with a meager estate. She lived in extreme poverty for 21 years as a widow and was often forced to beg for food and wood from her neighbors, which bred local resentment and suspicion. Margaret gave birth to several children, but lost many of them in infancy. In Puritan New England, a woman who struggled to successfully raise children was often viewed with suspicion or thought to be cursed.
🧙‍♀️Read a book where a character has a child die or a character who is cursed or a character who lives in poverty.

Because he claimed to know how to "detect" and counter the magic of witches, the town grew deeply suspicious of him and arrested him. He died suddenly in the Boston jail. Though a coroner's jury claimed he died of natural causes, the horrific, cramped prison conditions were almost certainly to blame.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book tagged as magic or where a character is suspicious or a character who is a non tradition medical person.

29. Ann Foster was an elderly widow in her 70s from Andover. After being accused, she was subjected to brutal, non-stop interrogations until she broke down and confessed to being a witch to make the torture stop. Despite her confession, she was kept in prison for months, where her health rapidly deteriorated. She died in jail just as the trials were beginning to wind down.
🧙‍♀️ Read a character who confesses to something or a character who dies in jail or where the authors initials can be found in ANDOVER.

30. Lydia Dustin was an 80-year-old woman from Reading. Her story is particularly tragic: she actually survived the mass hysteria and was tried and found "not guilty" by a grand jury in early 1693. However, colonial law required prisoners to pay for their own food and lodging while jailed. Because she was impoverished and could not afford to pay her "jail fees," the prison refused to release her, and she died a prisoner a month later.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character is found not guilty or where a character can't afford bail or where the first letter of the location can be found in COLONIAL.

31. Mercy Good's mother Sarah Good was arrested in late February 1692, she was heavily pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl, Mercy, while chained in a dark cell. The newborn was exposed to filth, freezing cold, and malnutrition, and died in prison just a few weeks later long before her mother was taken to the gallows to be hanged.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character is shown mercy or where a character gives birth or where a character is cold (Your interpretation).

Accused But Lived
32. Tituba was an enslaved woman owned by Reverend Parris. She was the first person accused and the first to confess. Realizing her dangerous position, she gave a highly detailed, vivid confession about meeting the Devil, riding on broomsticks, and seeing a "black book" signed by other local witches. Because she cooperated, she was not executed but spent over a year in prison because Parris refused to pay her jail,
🧙‍♀️ Read a book that is first in a series or where a person confesses to something or that has a black cover.

33. ELizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft before her husband. She was tried, found guilty and sentenced to hang. Her execution was delayed because of her pregnancy, and the trials ended before she could be killed, saving her life. She named her son John in memory of his father who was hung.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character is pregnant or with a character called Elizabeth or where the authors initials can be found in WITCHCRAFT.

34. Dorothy "Dorcas" Good: The four-year-old daughter of Sarah Good. Driven by the hysteria, the magistrates interrogated the toddler, who told them her mother was a witch and that she herself owned a "spirit animal" (a small bird) given to her by her mother. Dorothy was arrested and chained in a dark, cold dungeon for nearly nine months. While she survived the ordeal, she was so deeply traumatized by the prison conditions and her mother's execution that she suffered from severe mental illness for the rest of her life.

🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character wears a scarf or a character who is non corformist or where the authors initials can be found in PURITAN.

🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a grandfather as a character or where someone lies or where a character cries.

20. John Willard was a local deputy constable who was initially responsible for arresting the accused. Level 1: 20-40 Tasks October 1, 2026 - 5/31/2027

🧙‍♀️Read a book published in October any year The Outsider - Stephen King 08/10/26

🧙‍♀️ Read a book where the authors initials can be found in PURITAN. Ilona Andrews - Magic Burns

2. 🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is an author, or a character who is a judge or a character who is powerful.
Wicked: The Outstandiful Official Guide to Oz by Melissa Lagonegro - 10/5/26 - the Wizard is a powerful character

12. 🧙‍♀️ Read a book published in September of any year or with the word saddle in the text (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #) or where a character is defiant.
S is for Show Me: A Missouri Alphabet by Judy Young - 10/7/26 - Published 9/17/2001

🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character wears a scarf or a character who is non conformist or where the authors initials can be found in PURITAN.

18. 🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is hated or feared or a character who yells or where a character gets bitten.
The Spider and the Fly by Mary Botham Howitt - 10/3/26 - Character who is hated and feared

Accused and Died in Prison
27. Sarah Osborne: An elderly, bedridden woman who was already entangled in a local scandal for marrying her indentured servant and fighting her children over her late husband's estate. Too weak and sick to withstand the horrific conditions of the Boston jail, she died in prison on May 10, 1692, before she could ever stand trial.
🧙‍♀️ Read a book where a character gets married or where a character has a servant or a character who is sick.

28. Roger Toothaker was a folk healer and physician from Billerica.

🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is a small child or a book with an animal on the cover or a character called Dorothy.

Connie N. | 3851 comments I'm going to go for 50.

Salem
Timeframe: 10/1/26 to 9/30/27
0/50

Each task can be done as often as needed.

🧙‍♀️ Read a book with a character who is a small child or a book with an animal on the cover or a character called Dorothy.
