This is advice I gave on another discussion, about how to promote. The first part of my advice was the title - in that case, the title didn't clearly convey what the book was about - that's more important in non-fiction than in fiction. With small press, self published or niche books, it's a good idea to start local. Go to your local library, find out who is in charge of programs and see if they will book you for a reading/talk and allow you to sell your books after. (You will have to bring your own books.) At the end of your talk and with every sale, politely ask people if they will take time to post a review and mention the platforms (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Facebook, Goodreads) - do not assume they will know what, how and where to do this. If you have a local radio station, locally hosted programming, see if you can get booked for an interview. Most local stations are very willing to do this (it's also a good idea if you could book this in advance of a library appearance). Offer a few books as giveaways. And again, make sure you mention the book by title, not just "my book". The radio strategy also applies to podcasters - if there are any that are local or regional, or dedicated to self published authors contact them and see if you can get booked for an interview.
If your town has an indie book store, see if they'll take a few copies on consignment. Also, if your town has any sort of street fair, holiday fair, craft fair - often there is a cost for tables (you can sometimes share with another author); they are a good opportunity to interact with the public.
