EPS 97 in the Books on Asia podcast has a section on Bashō and follows Matsuo Bashō’s journey through Yamagata’s sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan, described in his travelogue The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches as translated by Yuasa Nobuyuki. They also look at Leslie Downer’s travelogue, On the Narrow Road to the Deep North, for another perspective on retracing the poet’s route.
