What a lovely quote! I have heard of the story, but never read it. Thank you, Gabriele! I'll look for it.
Gabriele,I am with you. We read it every year and my mother and I read it every year back when. We just started it this week at my house. Jeannette, I like the edition with the Trina Schart Hyman illustrations. And I have the video, but we haven't watched it yet. I can't say enough good things about the book though!
I love Trina Schart Hyman, too. I hope my library has this edition!
It's been a long time since I read the story (and used it in my English classes for the few years I taught), but I think that the movie is verbatim - with Denholm Elliot narrating - and with a few other bits thrown in. The production is truly beautiful.
I think the film is exact to the book too as far as I can remember. You are right, it is so different from the run-of-the-mill holiday movie. It should make an impression on most people.
I found the book, but I don't think the movie has made it to dvd. It isn't at my library and it isn't on netflix. :( Do either of you own it on dvd or just vhs??

I'll look for it. :)

I just finished this book. It is lovely! Is this indicative of Dylan Thomas' work? I don't believe I have read anything else by him. Thanks for recommending it!

Dylan Thomas's story is a treasure and also beautiful to watch on film.

Merry Christmas Gabriele and everyone in this group!! Hope Santa is good to all of you!
Thank you, Jeannette! And yes, Merry Christmas to you all. I'm already reading my "Christmas" books. : )
Merry Christmas everyone! I have Vile Bodies here waiting to be read. I'm looking forward to the discussion.
Hello and apologies for not being about recently but I would like to say that I hope everyone is having a Joy Filled Festive Season......
Lucky little me, I was blessed with some lovely presents from my mum this year. Befitting to the group, I got the newer version of the Forsyte Saga, Stephen Fry's Bright Young Things and the whole collection of Poirot (Suchet's). Books-wise, she got me The Priory and Mariana. I do love her! Anyway, I'll probably be sick to death of "between the wars" come next year!

Great presents! Just be sure to pace yourself! :)

I watched Bright Young Things this morning. Has anyone seen it yet? I liked it a lot. Stephen Campbell Moore and Fenella Woolgar stood out for me, but the rest of the cast where great too. But I haven't read Vile Bodies (yet!) so I can't compare. I have a feeling Stephen Fry lightened it up a little.
Hope you all had lovely Christmas, and will have happy new years. And DJ, I meant the era, not the group/you lot. :P

Just back after a marathon Christmas - fun but tiring. I got Bright Young Things a month or so ago, and really enjoyed it, Lauren. And I just started reading Vile Bodies, so it will be interesting to compare.
For Xmas I received the DVD set of A Dance to the Music of Time, which begins in the 1920s. I realize that I saw it many years ago, but am enjoying is again from a different perspective (i.e. research). We watched a few hours last night, and will probably be watching the rest of it all week! I think I'll really have to read the books as well now! - A Dance to the Music of Time First Movement

Dear Lauren much relieved!Though I didn t really think you were serious...Take Care and Happy Viewing and Reading!!
How is Vile Bodies so far, Gabriele? I suppose I coudl just hop over to the discussion to see. I wanted so much to read it but couldn't manage to track down a copy (I don't have a library card and I didn't fancy paying - cheapskate that I am).
I hope we can do The Priory soon, if people have managed to get copies.
The film/book look interesting. I'll have to have a proper look in a minute.
Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR MIDNIGHT ALL! I hope you all hae a great time. I won't be, as I'm babysitting my sister's son. He's a terror. xxx

Aww, Lauren, how tedious for you! I will drink a glass of champagne for you! We aren't doing anything in particular, otherwise.
I'm enjoying Vile Bodies, but am not far enough into it yet to make any thoughtful comments. I'll post a poll soon for a February read. I have The Priory, and a few others that were suggested last time.
Happy New Year, all!

"And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"
