Cecilia | 167 comments I really like the "Odd Thomas" series by Koontz, too, and also "Watchers" by the same author. Geez...there are a lot of good thrillers out there. One that has stayed with me, probably because it theoretically could happen, is, "One Second After" by William R. Fortschen. It's a story of one man struggling to save his family and small town after America loses a war, in one second, because of an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) weapon...which does exist. In one second after 9hense the title), America is basically living back in the Dark Ages. Too real and scary for me!

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 140 comments Hi Cecilia,
Paul Rix here, if you like books which could, [if you believe them:] scare the begeebers out of you, I dare you to try my current book. I write under the name of Timothy Pilgrim ans the book is called 'The Day The Ravens Died'
There are a couple of reviews on Amazon and a comment on the one from 'thunderguts' who I think could be an old army buddy. You can also read the first chapter for free on 'Authors on Line' which will tell you a little about the principle characters and very little about the plot! There are also a couple of comments around the 'goodreads' site and 'Tracey' gave it 4 stars.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]
[also available as an e-book:]

Cecilia | 167 comments Hi Paul,

I looked at your book info and reviews and it does look like a book I might enjoy.

Thanks for the tip. After reading your info page, you remind me of a friend of mine that was in Special Forces in Vietnam, worked for the CIA, is a doctor, paleontologist and is still into who knows what! You two would probably get along just fine & I'm sure I'd fit in the mix somewhere, too.

Thanks again for the tip on your book, Paul! I'll put it on my "To-Read" list.

Paul Rix here again, if you want a copy of 'Ravens' drop me an e-mail [oldgeezer177@yahoo.co.uk:] I've promised two copies to GR members in return for an honest review. I might be in the UK but getting a copy in the states is just as easy, as our printers [lightning source:] is an american company. Like I said if you want one let me know, all it will cost is your opinion.
Hope you're not snowed in, it's getting tricky around here, but at least the power is back on after nearly 48hrs! Brrrrh that was cold! and painfull, falling over the cats!
all the best'

Adele Gibbes (yellowstonegirl) | 6 comments Hi my name is Adele Lassiter and I'm the author of a new conspiracy thriller entitled "Burden of Proof." It is being published by Lone Mountain Press and distributed via Ingram.

Plot synopsis: In 2001, after seven innocent Americans open their mail, they die from inhaling deadly doses of the toxin thorax. Thorax is a fictional pathogen, which causes trouble breathing and cardiac arrest. The U.S. government instantly labels the attack as biological warfare from abroad. The Thorax Terror becomes a leading catalyst for U.S. entry into a controversial war in the Middle East.

Flash forward to 2007. Americans have grown tired of the war and distrust the current administration. When a plan is set in motion by a committee of nine D.C. power players to cover up the truth behind the Thorax Terror, it becomes a race against time to unravel a web of conspiracy which could shake the foundations of the American democratic system.

"Burden of Proof" is available online via Amazon and on Barnes and Noble. It is also on Amazon Kindle and Smashwords for $4.00 $1 of each copy sold will be donated to the American Red Cross for Haiti Relief.

Thanks for letting me post a blurb. I enjoy hearing about other good thrillers on this site.

Sugar & Spice

When you've got two young children, and you think the unthinkable, where do you turn?

Sugar & Spice is a ground-breaking new crime-thriller set against the background of Britain’s fragmented criminal justice system, with the key protagonists the mother and partner of a murdered child.

Inspired by a news story of a man who begged a Judge to give him a longer sentence, because he knew he would harm another child if released without treatment, Sugar & Spice is meticulously researched, asking the questions society prefers not to have answered. At once disquieting and challenging, Sugar & Spice is car-crash reading.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: A child fails to return home. As hours turn to days, all they can do is hope. Some children never come back...

Two boys find the severed arm of a missing child. For the distraught mother, Claire Meadows, and her partner Matt Burford, the arrest of local sex-offender Thomas Bristow seems to offer closure. But doubts soon emerge. The Met officers who “interview” Bristow are from the Gene Hunt school of policing, and the confession appears worthless when another child is killed while Bristow is on remand awaiting trial.

Driven by a mother’s need to know, Claire visits Bristow in prison. He presents a compelling defence, convincing Claire not only that he is innocent of harming her daughter, but that his previous convictions were not what they seemed.

Running parallel to this we meet Greg Randall, respectable accountant and utterly devoted father of six year old twins. But for Randall, the murder has brought to the fore private demons he has long been struggling to cope with:

Fearing he might one day lose control, Randall seeks counselling at a prestigious private clinic, licensed by the Home Office to treat sex-offenders. Randall’s struggle to balance his family life as he undergoes “therapy,” runs alongside the hunt for the child-killer, until eventually the two story-lines inexorably converge.
With the Police inquiry floundering, Matt and Claire embark on their own investigation, teaming up with a second-year psychology student and a fourteen year-old truant schoolboy to bring one man’s reign of terror to an end.

Warning: The research is meticulous, and the characters based on real-life studies.

This is a novel every parent should read.
But be warned: In Sugar & Spice not all things are nice...

Rachel Abbott (rachel_abbott) | 68 comments Karen DeLabar of Writing on the Rocks described Only the Innocent as having "darkness, abuse, degradation, drugs, sex and murder." which should give you a good idea of what to expect!

But here is the 'official' synopsis:

A man is dead. The killer is a woman. But what secrets lie beneath the surface - so dark that a man has to die?

Women are rarely cold blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody’s mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution.

The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

But nothing is as it appears on the surface. A web of complex relationships is gradually revealed and it seems that everybody has something to hide. As each horrific secret is exposed, Tom Douglas begins to realise that this is much more than a simple murder case. And he has a terrible dilemma to face - whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

This is NOT a novel for the faint-hearted! But I would love you to try it and tell me what you think.

You hooked me and Only the Innocent is now on my TR list. I note there is only a Kindle edition (which is fine for when I decide to download it). Did you "rescue" the book so that it doesn't disappear from GR on Jan. 30?

Hi Lee
It's available in all e-book formats - not just the Kindle. I can point you in the right direction if you want? It's on at a special price at the moment - nominally until the end of January - just 99 cents.

But I don't understand the "rescue" comment. Why would it disappear on Jan 30th? Sorry if I'm being dense here - I'm a bit new to Goodreads.

Thanks again.

Rosemarie, GR is losing its feed from amazon at the end of this month and data, including titles and authors' names, from amazon will be lost unless replaced from elsewhere. GR's staff is working on mass replacement. However, to be sure your book is safe, click on it here on GR. If it comes up with no message about needing to be "rescued," then there's no need to worry. If you get a "need to be rescued" message when you click on it, then follow the instructions to provide the needed information. It's not hard to do.

Lee Holz Terror Cell Terror Cell by Joseph H. Badal

Terror Cell is the second outing in the Bob Danforth series, and it is a dandy! Bob is back in Greece for the CIA where he is faced with multiple terrorist threats and geopolitical intrigue on a grand scale. His career and his life are on the line along with the lives of his wife and now grown Army officer son. The action is non-stop and the body count is high. The only thing more a thriller lover can ask for is excellent writing, and author Joseph Badal delivers in it spades. Highly recommended.

Chris Stralyn (chrisstralyn) | 16 comments Ok if I add my novel to this thread?

What would you do if street thugs invaded your home? What if you’re a daycare provider, caring for a dozen children at the time? Lisa Kaamp, a most unlikely heroine, faces just such a nightmare in This Time You Lose, the suspense driven story of one woman’s struggle to survive when she and the children she cares for become victims of a home invasion gone terribly wrong.

In This Time You Lose Lisa Kaamp operates a small childcare business out of her home in Nogeksum, Michigan. Highly respected and known for going the extra mile for her daycare kids, she thinks she’s handled every daycare emergency possible. But nothing prepares her for the horror she now faces. Lisa finds herself bound and gagged, four strange men in her home, and the daycare children held hostage in the next room. Terrorized by her captors as the authorities work to meet the ransom deadline, she tries negotiating with the men for the release of the children, but soon realizes they have no intention of letting anyone go. With the deadline approaching, Lisa must do the unimaginable to protect the children and get everyone out alive.

In 2008 This Time You Lose was named a finalist in the TNBW Strongest Start Novel Competition. Four months later it earned the distinction of being a TNBW Readers Choice Top Ten Novel, and has remained on the Top Ten list ever since.
