At a Christmas party last night, Matt brought bourbon and eggnog, and some people (mostly male halves of couples, it seemed) were delighted to try one. Often the wife would scrunch up her face and say "blech, no thanks" like a five-year-old offered a cup of coffee.
What's the deal? Is this a gender thing? Am I further evidence of gender discrepancies because I like eggnog?

What do you think of the thick, rich, holiday treat that is eggs, milk, sugar, and nutmeg?

message 2: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I've never been a fan, honestly. If it's a gender thing, my feminine side is coming out.

message 3: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I am very fond of this drink.

Yucch!! even the word is disgusting..
*sticks out tongue* yaaackkky

message 7: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You know, WA has a point. The word "eggnog" is disgusting.

message 8: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 06, 2009 10:47AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Phonetically the sound grosses me out. A bad mix of vowels and consonants, I say.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

We're phonetic soulmates RA..ha!
the 'antics of semantics'...:-)

message 10: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) I don't think I've ever actually tasted it. The name sounds so awful.

message 12: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments I love it, both with alcohol and virgin. My wife did the scrunchy-faced thing when I offered her a drink of mine recently. Evidently the texture of it bothers her, as she said that it reminds her of curdled milk.

Daiquiri m..mmmm now that is a proper beverage RA.

Someone once compared it eggnog to drinking pancake batter when I offered her some. She face-scrunched as well.

See - nobody is ambivalent on this topic. Love or hate.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Have you ever seen anyone barf wine coolers? It's not pretty. However, it is technicolor...

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I love eggnog both with or without alcohol.

message 17: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'll take any that anybody else doesn't want.

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) We'll just make extra so there's enough for both of us. The nog, I mean.

If there were a movie night featuring only Laura Linney movies, and with only spiced nog to drink (hypothetical distant future Christmas, of course) I would have to think hard about the decision to endure that much of her, but I think I might come just to drink the nog and be merry.

And, my two cents is that the gutteral "g" sounding twice in "eggnog" is satisfying and thoroughly Germanic to say. Me likey, the word and the drink both.

Félix (habitseven) Misha wrote: "We could make your nog extra rummy to compensate for Laura Linney, Sally."

Maybe after the spring we can. But not now!

Félix (habitseven) Misha wrote: "I was going with the "hypothetical distant future Christmas" you Sally mentioned. :)"

Ah. Of course.

Félix (habitseven) Moggie?

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Ah. Thanks, M.

message 26: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i used to drink it until i watched someone make it. raw eggs, pounds of sugar, eye of newt, wing of bat....

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) ... quart of rum ....

message 28: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) Eggnog is suspiciously absent from all my family's holiday functions.

Does anyone recommend any brands of eggnog you can pick up at a supermarket? I'm interested in trying it, both alcoholic and virgin.

message 29: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) In my vast experience with buying it in stores, I've found them all about the same.

message 30: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I've never had the boozy variety... must try that, but I love the regular version. One of my favorite treats each holiday are all the eggnog lattes that pop up all over. Add just a drizzle of dark chocolate and I'm in heaven!

My Dad used to make it from scratch when I was younger, but since they are teatotallers (did I spell that right?) they never added the rum/brandy. I may have to take his recipe and devirginize it!

"I agree about the gg's Sally. Eggnog sounds to me like snuggle and moggie and hug. Its a cuddly word."
Bun, that made me snort. I agree wholeheartedly! :)

message 31: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i think i will use that word as a slur for people who annoy me during the holidays

[as car pulls out in front of me in mall parking lot:] "nice drivin' EGGNOG!"

message 32: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) ^^That's so much nicer than "fuckwit", which is what I usually say. That, or "shitbag". Perhaps, in the spirit of xmas, we should all try to substitute "eggnog" for our usual favorite profanities. Excellent suggestion, Kevin.

message 33: by Heidi (last edited Dec 07, 2009 08:13AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I don't do the homemade variety, but I will drink it if it's the in-the-carton variety. It's REALLY good with Catdaddy Moonshine. If you go to the recipes page under Catdaddy... and scroll down to Daddy's Eggnog - THAT's the one. GAH. Heavenly.

message 34: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I must try that Heidi, since you recommend.

message 35: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Larry wrote: "I must try that Heidi, since you recommend."

I do recommend.

The only problem - Catdaddy's not easy to procure.

I have eggnog in my cup of coffee right now.

message 37: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah I've never seen it anywhere, that I recall.

message 38: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments According to the website, it's only available in 16 states. The closest state to you would probably be Illinois.

message 39: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Why that's just the other side of Iowa!

message 40: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Sally wrote: "I have eggnog in my cup of coffee right now. "

Now that I've never tried.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll meet you there Larry, it's just south of here.

message 42: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Sounds good Jim. It'll take me about 7 hours.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

It's about 3 hours to Rock Island for me.

message 44: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
So lets see. If Larry takes off now, and drives 60 mph the whole time, and Jim leaves in 4 hours and drives 90mph...

message 45: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) And if Larry drinks 6 ounces of tequila every 20 miles (while talking on his cell phone) ....

message 46: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
While Jim stops at every rest stop for a cocacola and a pee...

message 47: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I'm either gonna stop in Shreveport or Lafayette on my way home to stock up on some.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey if Larry bets tequila, can I have Captain Morgan to go with my cocacola?
