I decided to watch this book before reading it. The characters in a Dickens story are so many I get mixed up, so it's nice to have a face for them. I watched the version with Paul Scofield as the old Martin Chuzzlewit. The first chapter, the one on genealogies, was scathingly funny, very tongue-in-cheek. I've only just met Mr. Pecksniff and his daughters and found out his character, again in the ironic way that Dickens does so well. Dickens always astonishes me with his captivating style and power. More later when I finish the book.
