I believe in treating living things humanely. However, animals kill each other. We, as humans, are just a higher animal. Killing animals isn't wrong, torturing them is.

Hm, I just think it's important to be clear. There are lots of people that aren't cruel that work in animal industries. On fur... the issue is, animals are kept/raised in inhumane conditions, skinned alive or killed in a cruel manner, correct?
There are no federal laws protecting animals on fur farms in the United States. HOWEVER, that's not as bad as it seems. Laws governing fur farms are on a local/state level. That means that if you're concerned about fur farms in the U.S, I'd start by checking your own states laws and if you don't find them up to snuff, write your congresspeople.
And yes, I'm aware that "Write your congressman" is what jerks say when they're being smart-alecks, but I managed to get a hold of one of my state representatives before (on an unrelated matter). The idea that your local politicians will ignore you is not true. Most states have quite a few representatives.
Once you've checked out the local laws you could also write into the opinion section of your newspaper to raise awareness locally.
As for PETA I've never heard of a bigger pack of morons.
PETA is an animal rights organization. It rejects speciesism, and the idea that animals may be regarded as property. It therefore opposes the use of animals in any form: in animal testing, as food, entertainment, clothing, furniture, decoration, companionship for people, seeing eye dogs for the blind, or as working in any form such as shepherding sheep. PETA would like for all animals to be completely free from dependency on humans to survive.
So, PETA thinks having pets is wrong. Having seeing eye dogs is wrong. Shepherding sheep is wrong. Bigger bunch of baloney I've ever heard.
