What is everyone's opinion on the status of Cliffs Notes? As of now, the vast majority (although not quite all) of Cliffs Notes have the author equal to the author of the book which they are the notes for. My opinion is these should have the author as "Cliffs Notes" since they are produced by the company rather than by the author of the book itself. This policy (one way or the author) would apply to other study guides and similar materials as well.

I agree. The author of the original book can go in the second author slot.

soo, here, us medicine cat ppl can post the days that would work for us to have moonpool. i warn u now, my dad is more likely to let me on if it's a weekend.

What if the name were in the title? If you actually look at the covers, most are actually called things like "Salinger's Catcher in the Rye" rather than just "Catcher in the Rye" (although the titles in GR often do not reflect this thanks to Amazon).

And of course there are other exceptions, such as Cliff Notes to the Bible, which is by Charles H. Patterson. If we take the standard Cliff Notes pattern, I guess he must be the original author... Who knew?

*shrug* I would put the original author in slot 2 regardless.

I didn't think Cliff's Notes publications HAD an individual author listed. If they do, I'd say they should be first, no?

I have found the authors by the LoC. So to be clear:
slot 1: author of the cliff notes
slot 2: author: Cliffs Notes
slot 3: author of book being cliff noted

Sound good? I only keep the cliffs notes in there as an author per the above discussion which I took to mean that we could keep all the cliffs notes together. And I included author of the book being noted for ease of searching.
