seb (oddrid) I know it's been a while since most of us have read the books, but why not discuss the ones we HAVE read while waiting for the new one?

Favorite Character? The Hound
Why? Cause I'm a sucker for ugly nasty murdering guys with self-hate issues and soft spots for pretty girls.

message 2: by Marci (new)

Marci (bookjunkie71) mine would have to be Tyrion, he's a dastardly dwarf! but too funny. and also john snow, he's like the breakout hero of the series!

message 3: by Joro (new)

Joro I stand for Jaime. I love the way he turns from anti hero to a character you can understand and connect with.

message 4: by Helen (new)

Helen Arya is my favourite - such a fighter, and with a gift for friendship. I want her to end up safe and happy, but after what happened to Brienne in AFFC I'm scared to hope too much happiness for anyone.

message 5: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (robo) | 2 comments I'm going with John Snow. I love the way he's cast about as "the bastard," but ends up having some great adventures along the way.

message 6: by Christine (AR) (new)

Christine (AR) | 1 comments It's almost impossible to decide, but for me, it's toss-up between Jon and Danaerys. With Jaime and Arya right behind. And Tyrion. Plus Cersei is so evil she's awesome.

Okay, never mind, I can't decide.

message 7: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 1 comments I love Tyrion for the funny things he says and Danaerys for ... well she has her own dragons.

message 8: by Zach (new)

Zach Maxell (zacharymaxell) | 1 comments Tyrion. Hands down. He is by far the most entertaing character. I also enjoyed reading Ned's chapters in AGoT...but obviously that didn't last long.

message 9: by Lia (last edited May 27, 2008 11:53PM) (new)

Lia (bastet) | 8 comments george rr martin has said that tyrion is meant to be him, so that kind makes him my favorite... but dany will probably be the queen of westeros soon with jon and the third targaryen (?)when they ride in on the 3 dragons... but i think i especially love arya, who's on her way to becoming a faceless man (woman) ;)

message 10: by Allen, Warden of the Northwest (new)

Allen Allen (audiovore) | 71 comments Mod
I have to go with Danaerys, I love the immensity of her situation while she is just a young girl still. Then Tyrion, cause he is just plain bad-ass.

message 11: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (kerrymc) | 6 comments Anybody but Sansa. Phrase often heard at my house, "Stupid Sansa!"
So I guess that puts me on Team Arya.

message 12: by Chuck (new)

Chuck Bohannon | 1 comments I'm just waiting for John Snow and Danaerys to hook up and end a great but lagging series.

message 13: by Lia (new)

Lia (bastet) | 8 comments jon targaryen you mean... :p

message 14: by Rania (new)

Rania Melhem | 1 comments Robb, Rhaegar, Jaime and the Hound.
I realize that two of them are dead, but so what.
And absolutely yes Jon Targaryen.
I am surprised that there isn't a discussion about Jon's parents.

message 15: by Doza (new)

Doza | 2 comments Dolorous Ed.

message 16: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Baker | 1 comments Tyrion and Jaime are my favorites. Aside from the obvious, it's interesting to watch both brothers trying to keep King's Landing from imploding around them.

Oberyn Martel was my favorite minor character.

One character that I wanted to like was Jorah Mormont. It seemed like he was genuinely trying to get his act together and redeem himself, but at the end of book three he's just broken and jealous.

message 17: by Camb201 (new)

Camb201 | 1 comments Jamie or the Hound by far.

message 18: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (loderkelly) | 4 comments Well I belong to a medieval reenactment group and my name is Khaleesi so that should tell you something.

Tyrion also rocks And Lord Little Finger's character makes me laugh.

message 19: by Adam (new)

Adam | 2 comments I think the dichotomous nature of Jaime makes him my favorite. His character has made my emotions in these books swing as if on a pendulum. I am also beginning to love Brienne of Tarth. I can't figure out if I just love to root for the obvious underdog or what. And also an honorable mention to the stoic and all to quickly killed Ned Stark. Winter has come!

message 20: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Travers (notdarkyet) I typically don't read 'fantasy,' and that's not even the genre I would've considered this series personally (maybe only because of the social stigma!). The cast of characters in this series is so vast, unlike anything I've ever encountered. It's hard to find a character who you don't enjoy on some level or another.

My favorite would have to be, however, Sandor Clegane, because I like scumbags.

message 21: by Tek (new)

Tek | 8 comments Sarah wrote: "I know it's been a while since most of us have read the books, but why not discuss the ones we HAVE read while waiting for the new one?"

Trying to choose just one in this great collection of characters is a tough thing to do.

My favorite right now...Arya Stark.
But I love Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, and Sandor Clegane. Those are the top of my top, I must say.

message 22: by Michael (new)

Michael (darkdaysarehere) My fav character is Arya by far. I heard a rumor that the next book or a part of the next book may take place 6 years later. If that is true it will be an amazing read to see how her character has evolved

message 23: by Joe (new)

Joe | 2 comments I'd have to agree with you about Arya Stark, she is an amazing character. Close in second place though would be Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow.

message 24: by Chip (new)

Chip | 1 comments My favorite character is Danaerys, followed closely by Jon Snow and Tyrion. Of course I really liked Ned Stark too.

message 25: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 05, 2010 10:44AM) (new)

It's dificult to decide, so to name just a few I'd have to go with Tyrion, Arya, the Hound, and Jaqen H'ghar.

message 26: by John Behnken (new)

John Behnken | 12 comments Arya, Tyrion, Jon Snow and Ned Stark are the ones I relate to most and probably closest to my heart. The most interesting characters for me, I think, are Jaime, Little Finger, Brienne and the Hound. Honorable mention to Stannis - though I don't necessarily love him as a person, I really love reading about him. I think he's incredibly complex.
john

message 27: by Ami (new)

Ami (aimdoggg) Ayra. She rocks. And Jon Snow is pretty cool. I didn't really like Daerneys at first, but she has grown on me. Same with Sansa.

I like that the bad characters are really bad, and that the good ones still have faults- it makes them more relatable. And then there's the complex complicated ones that wind the story all together.

message 28: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) Tyrion is my favorite.

He's such a smart ass, nearly everything he says makes me laugh.

Jaime would come in second, much for the same reasons.

I also like Ayra, because she's make of rock.

Also, I agree with Ami, that the bad guys are really bad but the good guys all have their own faults. Usually, for the good guys, the fault is in being too good, or trying to be.

message 29: by Eowyn (last edited Jun 30, 2009 07:42AM) (new)

Eowyn O'Dwyer (eodwyer) Goddamnit. I don't think it's possible for me to pick a favorite. I have to agree with everyone here though- I don't think Tyrion has ever failed to make me laugh. I admire Daenerys, but I don't feel she's as well developed as some of the others, though that may be because I'm only partway through the third book at this point.

As much as I like Arya, she irritates me with the way she acts sometimes. I just feel that I really connect with Sansa more- not necessarily a good thing, but true all the same.

Cersei is one of my favorites, despite my extreme hatred of her. It disturbs me that I understand many of her emotions and actions. (With the exception of Jaime and her issues with penis envy, of course. She'd make Freud proud.)

message 30: by Erika (new)

Erika Boncz (erikaboncz) | 3 comments wow I really need to read the books again...I would have to say.....from what I remember and what you all are saying, Tyrion....I agree with Jason he is such a smart ass but such a survivor. I also like Arya and John Snow...he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

message 31: by Sabina451 (last edited Jul 01, 2009 10:23AM) (new)

Sabina451 | 1 comments OK: Bronn, Sansa, Sandor, Stannis, Jaime, Cersei, Daenerys and Varys.
KO: Bran, Arya, Greyjoys, Catelyn Stark, Littlefinger, Sam.

Impossible not to empathise with Jon Snow and Tyrion.

message 32: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) Ah, somehow I forgot about Jon Snow. He's one of my favorites too!

Actually, I really loved reading all scenes that involved the wall and the men in black. I don't think I'd want to be apart of that group, but they have an interesting society.

message 33: by Zala (new)

Zala | 7 comments Arya. No further words needed. :)

message 34: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) | 2 comments Arya and Dany

message 35: by Rasmus (new)

Rasmus Rubæk (lordgothmog) | 1 comments The great thing about ASoFaI is that almost all the characters are so fantastic.

In most fantasy novels with POV characters, I always have some definite favourites that I look forward to reading. In ASoFaI that's not the case. I enjoy all chapters almost equally.

But....if I had to pick one, I'd probably say The Hound. I'm always a sucker for the wickedest bastards.

message 36: by Rohan (new)

Rohan (rohangpatil) | 1 comments Little Arya :) and Jon Snow .. Beautiful Danny too..
and all the wolves !!

message 37: by Frankie (new)

Frankie | 1 comments Sandor Clegane. I, too, am a sucker for bad guys. (And I think he's heading for redemption...)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I have a few favorites-Ned, Catelyn, Sansa of the Starks, Jon Snow, Dany and Tyrion.

message 39: by Tammo (last edited Nov 27, 2009 08:41AM) (new)

Tammo | 6 comments I cannot really go for one as well,
mine are John, Ned, Arya and most of all Tyrion.

and never forgett the onion-knight. One of the most tragic characters IMO.

message 40: by Tim (new)

Tim | 4 comments Dany's my dream girl, blonde, kind but not spineless and dragons

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 1 comments Tyrion is a humanist, as much as anyone can be in such a world... and his wit and sense of self-irony make him utterly likable. Also, he has a wicked sense of humour.
Then there´s Jaime, who turned out to be a fascinating character after all, especially after the loss of his arm.
And since I always take a liking to the bad guys: Theon Greyjoy is my guilty pleasure here.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments even Greyjoy?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments me either, I want to throw him out a window.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I say that all the time that I want to throw so and so out the window. "The things we do for love."

I prefer to use the proper term, defenestrate. It always makes me smile [inside:] a little when I think of obits/autopsy reports saying Died by defenestration/Cause of Death: Defenestration. I'm probably a bit weird tho.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments Joffrey is a prick. How can anyone like him? Though, I introduced the series to a friend who introduced it to someone else and she developed an infatuation for Joffrey. For example, Oh Sansa so lucky. She gets to marry Joffrey. He is so handsome and he loves her so much. *gag*

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I kid you not Brie, she has "fantasies" about Joffrey and she broke up with her bf because he wasn't Joffrey. Mind you, she only read the first and second books then she complained they were too long.

Allen Allen (audiovore) | 71 comments Mod
She most surely be/sounds like a youngin.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments She's 21 and she thinks everyone over 25 is OLD :)

Huh. Thats a bit of a surprise. Was expecting halfway though high school at the most. :/

Just read about the Defenestrations of Prague, and von Hohenfall made me lol a little.
