The compulsion to complete is vital. Like most of us, I suspect, I have a massive backlog of first drafts. (Full length, shorts, novellas, screenplays...)I'm beginning to think that while writing a novel is a massive first step, the major steps to becoming a writer are to:
a) Edit, rewrite and proofread mauscripts (i.e. finish them)
b) Submit the manuscripts!
So, yes, let's keep track of all the editing and submiting we're doing. It's as important as the actual writing, if not more so.
I agree with Paul, the work of writing is finishing well. Glad to know I'm not the only one with piles of unfinished work. Good luck Clifford, good editing to the finish--your work deserves it. Cheers
A plus on my side has been since 2002, a subscriber to three writing magazines ( The Writer, Writers Digest, and Poets & Writers) where each issue I've read from cover to cover and have saved all copies, highlighting important information for future referances.
As I finished reading my first novel in 2010, I returned to my writing on this day in hopes to finally finish my work in progress.

Finished reading my 2nd novel of the month. On my last trip to the public library, there's an area where the library discards used damaged books to be taken out by anyone to not be returned. A novel by Rachel Billington The Garish Day was the book I took home and just finished. I'm impressed with the story of Henry/Harry who struggles with the concept of the Catholic religion.I'm struggling also in completing chapter 9 of my work in progress Death By Denial.
I continue to work on chapter 9 making changes and adding because I feel that this chapter is a critical point in the novel for the main character (before I even consider moving to begin chapter 10).
I've caught up reading all my magazines to date. I'm reading my 4th novel of the month. I'm slacking in my writing time for the month, except for my daily log that I started on the first of the month.
It's four above zero and just finished reading the fourth novel of the month Wages of Sin by Andrew M Greeley. Eager to walk to public library for two more novels.
Almost the end of the month and I've done little writing. Was inspired by Amazon.com on 1-30-10 and CreateSpace.com to the possible entry of a completed novel by deadline 2-7-10. Started 2nd draft on work in progress Guilty Motives. On Friday spent 6-hrs on Chapters 1 & 2.
On Saturday spent 7-hrs on Ch 3 & 4.
The past 2-days I've reworked chapters 21 & 22 the ending of Guilty Motives. Will continue to 2nd draft chapters 5 - 20 with little hope to complete for 2010 entry to Amazon. At least at present I'm back to writing...
I'm happy for you. your getting a lot done.i too had a similar epiphany, if thats what you want to call it, in the past couple months to finish my first novel that i started. it's harder than i had expected
Keep working at it, you're doing great :)
good luck with the Amazon deadline, you've still got time
Never lose hope because the moment you do, you'll have little left to live for
In performing 2nd draft on chapter 22 Guilty Motives, I expanded on the chapter that does end this novel about a young boy and his hatred toward his mother and sister, his love of certain women in his life, and of murder.Another novel in progress (chapters 1-8, Death by Denial by Thecliff Chamber can be seen on the website at authonomy.com in United Kingdom. I've recieved constructive criticism that has been benefial as I continue writing the first draft.
I finished reading another novel by Andrew M Greeley and will begin reading a second novel for the month.
I completed a 2nd draft of chapter 4 Guilty Motives and this came to my attention; I finished the first draft years ago and as I work on this 2nd draft, the changes are numerous because I realize the amount of learning I've acquired in the past few years. I'm in awe to the improvement with a second draft.
Finished reading my 2nd novel of the month as I continue to write 2nd draft of chapter 5 Guilty Motives.
The concept that each day has twenty-four hours plays havoc on my mind. If I died today, people would say that I wasn't lazy. I keep busy trying to make each day worthwhile. Now being in my sixties, each day is spent with sleep (need rest), eating (I eat good), lack of exercise (I try to take a walk each day for fresh air), and then my many projects consisting of writing and reading. This includes my sports, poker, website building, and casino trips. (AND, the fact that I'm a friend of Bill W. that means meetings and sponsorship). Can I say my plate is full (overfull)? And then the sun sets to end another twenty-four hours as I write in my daily journal.
Finished another novel reading by Andrew Greeley that had an epilogue. Received brainstorm to write epilogue to my work in progress novel Guilty Motives that's fitting for the sequel with characters Clifton York and Rex House in another work in progress novel The Engram Factor.
The short month of February ended with sporadic writing as I fall behind in my quest to finish all my works in progress. However, finished reading another novel by Andrew M Greeley Patience of a Saint and another issue of Writer's Digest.
The mood to write continues to be sporadic as I build more webpages on the Internet for sports and poker. My website has so much to offer that it's hard to imagine that I've the time to catch up on a daily basis, and that I continue to read at least two hours a day (another novel by Andrew M. Greeley).
Will start reading another novel by Andrew M Greeley as my work in progress sits idle on my desk. Honestly, no real excuse to not be writing. I'm good at thinking.
Completed reading novel by Greeley and because of an upcoming movie on Lifetime in April, will embark on novels by Patricia Cornwell starting with At Risk. The month of March is shot with no writing. Preparing with upcoming baseball season with drafts and many fantasies. This alone has taken many hours in a day in preparation. Playing poker on the Internet and taking the bus tours to casino. However, did read three novels this month and my magazines updates.
Finished a short novel At Risk by Patricia Cornwell. MLB starts Sunday and webpages are set for the long season. Hopefully, will start finishing works in progress. Spring/summer has sprung.Get your head out of ass Thecliff .
Finished 2nd draft of chapter 5 Guilty Motives that took over a month. Why? Do you really want to hear of an excuse?Spending many hours on webpage creations and reading novels. Also reading new copy of The Writer .
Finished reading a novel by Conrad Richter A Simple Honorable Man about a priest written as a narration. And now back to the the character Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell Postmortem . The only copy at the library was in large print.Chapter 6 of Guilty Motives is under second draft.
I've completed reading the novel Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell and now will read Body of Evidence .Entering the final week of April having done no writting on works in progress. No excuse.
Yesterday I completed the reading of Body of Evidence and started the third book in the series of Dr. Kay Scarpeta All That Remains .Now that the month of May is upon us all, is not it time to get back to writing? I think about my many works in progress as I walk the streets or sitting in my comfortable chair...
Completed All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell and now will read Cruel & Unusual and completed another Poets & Writers issue as I continue to succeed in much reading in 2010.
On finishing reading Cruel & Unusual I'm delighted to have uploaded the first six (6) chapters of Guilty Motives to the website authonomy.com for everyone to view; under my pen-name Thecliff Chamber .I shall move on to chapter 7 for corrections and additions and proceed to county library for two more novels of the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.
Completed reading The Body Farm the fourth novel in May and continue to work on redraft of chapter 7 Guilty Motives as we near Memorial Day ending the month of May and the start of summer.
It's a Saturday and I've not been here in two weeks. My novel reading for 2010 has been right on to date as I finished another reading by Patricia Cornwell From Potter's Field and currently reading Cause of Death .My writing to date has been sub-par, struggling to even turn on the writing computer to my right side as I sit typing this entry.
Finished another novel reading Cause of Death by P Cornwell and started reading Point of Origin written by Patricia as I continue to read the whole series of Dr. Kay Scarpetta's stories. The library had a DVD 10 CD's of Unnatural Exposure and for the first time that I can recall instead of reading a novel I'll listen to C.J. Critt read the novel to me. I've already listened to 2 of 10 of the discs and am in chapter 4.I find this fantastic. Have you ever listened to a novel being read?
Yes, I even have performed more work on chapter 7 Guilty Motives .
As I near the end of reading Point of Origin I've also listened to 5 of 10 discs of another novel. My writing of Guilty Motives came to an abrupt halt for fighting with POV. Why, am I screwing around with POV? It's not the character, but rather the present/past tense that I'm stumped on.
Finished reading Point of Origin and started reading Black Notice by Patricia. I've also have now listened to 7 of 10 discs to Unnatural Exposure and find this experience a blessing. To listen to one read a novel does work on my senses and have looked at the program Screenwriter that I purchased years ago and has been uploaded on my computer. Why not use the feature of talking script with my work in progress Guilty Motives ? Performed a draft on chapter 7 using present tense throughout the work.
I completed listening to the final disc of the novel read Unnatural Exposure by Patricia Cornwell and up to date with the ongoing lives of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, niece Lucy, and Captain Pete Marino. What a thrill to have listened to a novel being read.Completed another draft of chapters 6 & 7 of Guilty Motives and uploaded both to the website authonomy.com for viewing.
I seemed to be in a groove for writing today.
Completed reading Black Notice and will walk to the library tomorrow. Also edited chapter 1 of Guilty Motives and uploaded same to website for viewing.
I've started reading The Last Precinct the next in the series of Dr. Kay Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell.I also completed editing chapter 2 Guilty Motives and have started on chapter 3 as well as another draft to chapter 8.
On July 2 I finished reading The Last Precinct and started reading Blow Fly by P Cornwell. Yes, I've been writing much the past ten days. I edited chapters 3 - 7 Guilty Motives and uploaded back onto website at authonomy.com for everyone's enjoyment. Also, finished another draft on chapters 8 & 9 and have uploaded. Currently working on chapter 10 as another Fourth of July passes.
Finished reading Blow Fly on July 10th and started reading Trace by Pat Cornwell (I read this novel earlier in the year).Completed another draft on chapters 10, 11, & 12 Guilty Motives and uploaded all to authonomy.com for viewing.
The month is reading and writing, the enthusiasm is at a high.
My writing is frequent as the mood is great. I completed another draft of chapters 13 & 14 Guilty Motives and have uploaded to the Internet for viewing. Also on Jul 15 I developed a book cover for the novel Engram Factor using a photo found at scientology website. This novel is a sequel to Guilty Motives and I've performed 25 chapters of the first draft.
I completed another draft on chapter 15 Guilty Motives and uploaded to the Internet for viewing.Completed reading Trace by Patricia Cornwell for the second time in three months as I continue to read each sequence novel of main character Dr. Kay Scarpetta. Am now starting to read Predator .
This has been a great month for writing. On July 19 completed another draft on chapter 16, on July 21 completed another draft on chapter 17, and on July 23 completed another draft on chapter 18 Guilty Motives and have uploaded all three to the Internet for viewing.
Completed reading Predator and began reading The Book of the Dead by Patricia Cornwell as I continue to read the complete series on Dr. Kay Scarpetta.I also have completed another draft of chapters #19 & #20 in my work in progress Guilty Motives .

Since 2000 (while working a job) I've started writing five novels of which the first draft is completed on two. All is a work in progress. In November '09 being a member of NaNoWriMo I began to write the start of a sixth novel. After one week it struck me that this all wasn't right. I stopped and took a hard look of my past nine years. Why start something that I will not finish?
I never was one to make New Years resolutions. However, now that a new year is upon us all, I've set a goal for 2010 to finish all that I've started. That being said, I'll keep this discussion open and let's share our thoughts as each day passes.
