I just finished this book 2 days ago and highly recommend it if you are intrigued by English country gardens and/or thoughtful garden commentary that goes beyond the "plant this in acid/alkaline soil" mentality. The photos are superb, the writing is enjoyable, and it's altogether an inspiring and satisfying book, especially for a cold winter's day.

This book sounds right down my alley. I got "The Garden in Winter" for Christmas and am about half way done reading it. So far I've enjoyed it and having been getting some ideas about what I could do with my own yard.
Thanks for the suggestion Cynthia! Cheryl, my hubby got me The Garden in Winter last Christmas and I love it!
Are you guys talking about Rosemary Veery's The Garden in Winter or Sue Bales' The Garden in Winter?
Mine is by Suzy Bales, sorry for not mentioning that! The Garden in Winter Plant for Beauty and Interest in the Quiet Season. The cover alone made me want it, lol!
LOL. Just wanted to mention my favorite book for drooling purposes is "Best Borders" by Tony Lord. Another favorite is The Harrowsmith "Perennial Garden" by Patrick Lima. This book is geared to the northern gardener, has great pictures and tons of info. When I first started to garden with perennials this book was my bible. My favorite all around info book is "The Garden Primer" by Barbara Damrosch. No color photos, but info on everything to do with gardening. My copy is pretty battered indicating how much I've used it over the years.
Great ideas. Thank you so much. I'm amused at myself - I thought I had seen most of the gardening books out there, but I haven't seen any of these as far as I know! Amazon, here I come!
Love finding out about more drool worthy books! One that's not drool worthy but Laugh Out Loud funny at times is "Beds I Have Known" by Martha Smith. It's a permanent fixture on my night stand. Hhhmmm... I have to check my shelves for other faves! (My memory fails me sometimes).
I've added "Beds" to my to-read list. I just remembered a book I don't think I have anymore called "Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots" or something like that. It was a lot of fun to read with lots of illustrations, interesting ideas of stuff to make from or for the yard and garden as well as practical information. Does anyone have this book? I can't remember the author although I think it might have been Sharon Lovelace.
I've heard of Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots but I don't have it. I think I've seen it at the one library branch. I'll take a peak & see if it's there and let you know the author. I read a great one called Eat More Dirt: Diverting and Instructive Tips for Growing and Tending an Organic Garden within the past few years from the library. I need to get my own copy.
