Rocket Boys discussion

I went to a book discussion of this book and everyone else was alive when Sputnik went over and they talked about the profound affect on their lives that had. The members of this book group were also quite against the father in the book. My own opinion is that he did the best that he knew how and that he really did take care of people in a way. He let people stay on here and there in the town even though it was against the rules. I didn't know why he didn't think that much of Homer but in his own mind, he could see that it was important for him to have a trade and he himself loved the mine.

I got to hear Homer Hickam speak and have him sign my copy. He was very nice and interesting. What struck me was his love for both of his parents. Also he said that he really had to go back in time to write about his childhood and that he is no longer that person. Also he considers himself more of a writer than an engineer even though he did eventually work for NASA.
He has written more books than I knew.

I read the synopsis of this book, and it sounded familiar, then I realized that we've seen the movie
based on it: "October Skies". If you haven't seen it, you should.
