Actually, the best way to find friends, if your list is sitting there pathetically small and you want to network and make useful contacts, is to go through the member list of groups that you are in. If the profiles are public, look for friends that have common interests or are involved in something that you're looking to learn about. Send the friend request, and a message helps. Just to explain why you're 'randomly' friending them.

When you have a few friends, look at their friend lists, usually there are one or two on theirs that would suit you as well.

Now, if you're just stalking, stop it. That's rude and creepy.

Thanks for that little tip, Renee. I suppose if none jump out with real compatability, then they could look for friends like you etc by emailing within groups and getting to know people better.
Regarding the random thing. I think your right, a message breaks the ice better than getting a friend request from someone you have never heard of. I have a wee message that asks the person why they think I'd be a good friend. Sometimes works.
Yup, I'd whole-heartly agree to stop lurking, if you are brooding around in the corners, don't do it, it's better fun to join in. Honest.

Yes, people shy away from lurkers, they're creepy. Best to join in the discussion for something, then friend requests tend to multiply, unless you're argumentative, then they tend to decline. You don't want negative numbers of friends.
