I love the compact edition of the OED. (I'd love to have the funds to subscribe to the online edition, which gets updated frequently.)

My edition is so old (The Compact Edition of The Oxford English Dictionary: Volumes I and II, slipcased with reading glass) that nearly 40 years of changes are not included.

I love the The Canadian Oxford Dictionary: Thumb-indexed; it actually has some typically Canadian words and sayings. One of my favourite linguistic reference books is the Encyclopedia of the Languages of Europe; it lists not only current European languages, but also many of the ones now extinct, a great reference for anyone interested in linguistics.

I am listing here Right Dog For You. It is an excellent reference book if you are considering getting a breed dog. Muts are fine, but you never quite know what you are getting. Not that that matters b/c a dog will return all the love you give them. It is just that I get so annoyed when I see people picking dogs by how they look. You have to know the general breed characteristics befor you choose a dog. I know, I know, every dog is different, but you SHOULD know the general characteristics of the breed you choose. The dog's breed has to fit your own lifestyle! And if you choose a mut you can check out the breeds that lie behind the wonderful dog you are considering.

Chrissie, Thanks. I have a ton of books like that from over 20 years ago. I haven't listed them on Goodreads. I have an entire dog (small) bookcase, but I've added only a couple of the books from it. I love these kinds of books. I think it's so important to read them before you adopt a dog. I like mutts, but you can usually tell the predominant breeds in them so these books are still incredibly helpful.

Lee, RDFY is NOT a new book. I bought it years ago. It IS very good. Old can be better than new sometimes :0) . I am chuckling aver here.

Books are dangerous, I would like to get some of the great German reference books, particularly "der große Brockhaus), but I cannot afford it and I don't have room for it as well. But, I am going to list my favourite birding reference guide here, All the Birds of North America.
