Most of my books have a story somewhere behind them, some kernel of truth, some event or person or phrase that got me started thinking. My brand new Redemption River series is no different. (Book one, FINDING HER WAY HOME, is on the shelves now.) The concept came from a small Oklahoma town that is a step back in time to the Land Run of 1889. Guthrie, with its colorful history and gorgeous turn-of-the-century buildings hosts a Territorial Christmas each year. One year, for my birthday, my husband and I spent the weekend in one of Guthrie's authentic Victorian homes, now a bed and breakfast. We rode the trolley for a candlelight tour, strolled the streets listening to carolers in 1800's dress, bought hot peanuts from boys in knickers, and sipped wassail and sampled cookies as we peered inside storefronts at living Christmas cards that depicted scenes from a bygone era. I was so taken with Oklahoma’s original state capital that I wrote a historical novella set there. But that didn't seem to be enough. Soon, I had the idea of creating a similar, modern day town founded during the Land Run. But Redemption would be birthed by a reformed gunslinger as a place for scoundrels such as himself seeking refuge and renewal. From that beginning a legend grows that the small, now modern day town has something special to offer those in need. And so began the current five book series, a series about hope and healing and, of course, redemption. Please join me soon in Redemption River, where healing flows.
