More than ever these days it's incumbent on writers to get up from behind their comfy desks and actively promote themselves. The question is, how do the small fry draw attention to themselves? In particular I'm talking about the Web because that's the big pond we're all splashing around in. I can find lots of sites that include book reviews including my own but my blog averages 200 hits a day so if I get an author a half-dozen sales I can probably pat myself on the back. The same would go for author interviews too.
Where are the sites that will make a significant difference and how might a little sprat like me pique their interest?
That's another great suggestion. Thanks Jim. That deserves a category by itself. I'm thinking a good title would be "Promotion on the Web"...

Hi, this Soumya. Don't you think there should be a catagory on how to write a book? Various people can give ideas on what to write on or how to write it.
Maybe you've already done this but I'd be interested in how useful you guys think an Internet presence is in helping writers with the (relatively new) and endless job of self-promotion.e.g. beyond the obligatory web page
Blogs?
MySpace/Facebook/Goodreads pages?
Characters on Second Life?
There are a lot of writers on Goodreads and I'd be interested in their experiences.
Hi Kit. That's a great question for the Marketing and Promotion thread a little bit further down on the group page. Would you mind cutting and pasting the same question there?
