The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen. In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief, her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor and begin the difficult process of healing. In the hands of a brilliant novelist, this story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.

Kari I finished this book last weekend and I liked it. I had heard prior to reading it that you either love it or hate it but I was the only person that didn't have a strong opinion on it. But like I said it was a good book!

I'm kind of the same, it wasn't my all time favourite book, but it was definietly good. I heard that the movie wasn't though.

message 5: by Kari (new)

Kari I do want to see the movie but I want to wait till it comes out on video so I don't waste a fortune @ the movies! Besides I am not a huge fan of going to the movies, I would rather watch them @ my own pace @ my own house!

I'm actually going to the movies tomorrow, i don't mind it. But sometimes it's better to curle up on my bed and watch a movie with friends than go to the movies, and it definietly is expensive that's for sure. And i think that I'm going to wait till it comes out on DVD too.

I really enjoyed the book. The ending was different, I kind of liked that the ending wasn't all that happy. Happily ever after is needed to make a story good. Although, there was part that was kind of creepy. (I don't want to give it away if people haven't read the story.)

I think I have an idea of what your talking about with the creepy thing. And the ending was different, I wasn't sure what I thought of it at first.

Heather, I was a bit upset about the ending but as I thought of it... I think it helped make the book. I read it quite awhile ago and it is something that I have not forgotten.

I don't know about the movie. The previews don't look good at all. Actually, I'm not sure I want to see the creepy part either. As much as I liked the book I'm not going to be rushing to the theater or to blockbuster any time soon. Unless there is a rush of you must see.

They are, and I haven't personally seen the movie yet, but my friend that have and have read the book, say that the movie wasn't good at all. They left a lot out.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I believe it. Thinking back to the book I think that some parts would have to be cut out to make the movie more viewable by all. So, I'm guessing all the good parts are shown on the previews and I wasn't impressed with those.

Me neither, and they always do that with movie, show the best parts of it. But I went to the movieslast night and saw Avatar, and I have to say it was just as good as they show on the trailers, I really liked it.

I loved Avatar!!! The effects were AMAZING!!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes Avatar was a great movie about the globalization, taking advantage of the Natives. Is there a folder for that movie?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

no, but maybe we can make a movie folder, what do you think Heather?

I haven't seen the movie, but my friends that have and have read the book say that it wasn't very good at all. I'm still going to watch it eventually though.

I always end up watching the movies if I get a chance, if I don't like it I don't like it.

message 19: by **Carla** (new)

**Carla** I just started the book. Not very far into it yet though.

message 20: by **Carla** (new)

**Carla** so I am about half way through the book and I have mixed feelings on the book. It's good, a good story and whatnot but can seem a little confusing at times. There are parts that I am in aww that the part I just read was so beautifully written or well written but I almost feel at this point I liked the movie better so far. I find the movie has taken the book and put it in a logical order of events making it easier to follow. But I still have the second half to read which could very well change my opinion yet.

message 21: by **Carla** (new)

**Carla** I finished the book and I still feel mixed feelings on the book. I like it I really do and there are parts that written so well. I didn't realized the book would go so many years after the murder. I guess I would have to say for the most part I liked the bulk of the book but felt some parts were unnecessary. But overall a good story.

I found that it slowed down a lot in the middle for me at least and I didn't read it as fast once I got there.

message 23: by Scott (new)

Scott Carter I enjoyed the book and was pleasantly surprised by the movie. Any thoughts on why the movie got bashed?
