As we arrive in Afghanistan, the C-17 aircraft is flying tactical with no lights onto the runway. Its 0300 hrs in the morning. Pitch dark the night is cold!
We immediately begin to unload our equipment and at the same time we look at the surrounding tarmac area and see other European Coalition Special Forces also unloading their personnel and equipment.
We immediately load all our equipment on U.S.Army cargo trucks and begin our transportation to our Forward Operating Base in Kabul.
As we observe the entrance of this Special Forces Firebase the area is well fortified with heavy crew serve weapons manned by personnel from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division.
We noticed a few personnel from the French Foreign Legion also on one of the fighting defense positions at the main entrance of the firebase.
We finally reach our designated area to begin our unloading of our personnel and equipment, when suddenly we begin to hear the sounds of exploding mortar rounds or rockets hitting inside the Forward Operating Base.
We scramble for cover! I could hear a second and third incoming rounds hitting inside and outside the firebase perimeter. Boom! Boom! Boom!
Our firebase immediately begins firing illumination mortar rounds on the southwest side of the firebase.
You could hear personnel from the 3rd Special Forces Group yelling commands and giving fire missions to their mortar crew teams.
U.S. mortar crew teams fire mortar rounds. We quietly listened and observed -then heard our mortar rounds hit their targets in the distance: "Boom! Boom! Boom!" all we could do is sit and wait!
Hell, we were in Afghanistan no more than 1 hour and we were already getting attacked by the Taliban.
This was my first day in Afghanistan!
