She's referring to Anne's eventual change in relationship with Gilbert. Hope I didn't spoil the book for you.
Kathy wrote: "She's referring to Anne's eventual change in relationship with Gilbert. Hope I didn't spoil the book for you."I agree. I believe her comment, if completed, would have been something along the lines of, "Friendship IS beautiful, but someday you will find there is something more." - alluding to love, specifically with Gilbert.
Yeah i also think that she was going to say abt Anne and Gilbert.she knew something will happen b/w Anne and Gilbert.
I am so glad someone else wondered about this! I just read this chapter and wasn't sure what she meant. The responses to your question seem spot on. Thank you!
Yes, she meant that someday she wouldn´t find friendship fully satisfying, and she would want love in her life-Gilbert, to be short.

I'm reading this (my favourite childhood book) again for the first time in probably 20 years! It's bringing back so many happy memories but also reading from an adults perspective I'm reading so much more into Montgomery's writing. I'm glad i decided to go back and read the books that shaped my childhood

"Friendship IS very beautiful," smiled Mrs. Allan, "but some day..." ... she left her sentence for the future years to finish.
I cannot with one score and one year behind me figure out what she left unsaid. Can you?
