Thanks for the info Monica! I put www.metmuseum.org into my favorites so I can go back to the site all the time. It's nice to have the internet now a days so we can see all these great Art sites from the comfort of our own homes :) . Of course I am still more for seeing Art in person, it is way better in person! It's even better when at a museum with a fellow Art Lover to discuss the art with.
You're right, Ruth. His work definitely was original! Looking at the website that Monica posted, I have to say I especially like Untitled [Hotel Beau-Sejour:]. Quite interesting.
I intend to go to Chicago to see the new modern wing because there's many of Cornell's boxes on view. A friend went there a couple weeks ago and said there were a dozen exhibited. I was hoping all forty would be displayed. Last I heard The Art Institute of Chicago had the largest collection in the world.
I've been to the Art Institute in Chicago, yet I don't remember seeing any Cornells. How could I have missed them? I'm kicking myself. Cornell is one of my passions.
I have a couple muso friends who perform there every so often. I'll let you know when I'm going, maybe you'll make it too.
That's a great one, Kim. Now someone else can post some art news to the 'Art Lover's News Corner' instead of just me! I would love that, thanks for sharing!
Forgive me, this is a bit of a time-waster, but I found Art History Quizzes and Trivia online at: http://www.funtrivia.com/quizzes/huma...
My kind of fun. Thought I might pass it on.

Thanks for the site Divvy
I tried some of the quizzes and found that I'm not as artsy knowledgeable as I thought on some of the quizzes
they were really interesting, fun and informative
I did pretty well. But then, I used to teach Art History. I did miss a couple that I definitely should have known, though.
Thanks for the Art History quiz link -- lots of fun! I did well; I volunteer as a docent at an art museum that has works of art ranging from Sumerian to contemporary exhibits of today's artists just beginning their careers.
Glad you all enjoyed them. I didn't do quite as well as I thought I should have, but considering the wide range of periods and movements...Ruth, did you teach at the college or HS level? Just currious.
I taught at the college level, Divvy. My MFA is in Painting, but for years I taught a general one-year Art History course. In studio courses I mostly taught Drawing.
have you guys heard of the site tinyshowcase? They feature a new limited edition print every week, very affordable. They've shown all sorts of artists, eclectic and fun... helped me discover all sorts of art.

Ruth wrote: "Joseph Cornell was a wonder. There's nobody like him."I fully agree, has mystery and poetry ,a charm difficult to explain

I browsed around...there is nothing like visiting a museum while you're in pajamas and just about to take a nab.
Thank you Monica :)

Pinoy Stitch
while searching for my favorite artist, this one caught my eye. It's designed by Morris & Co

Good one, Amal. While looking for the Unicorn tapestries I found this Morris & Co homage. This gives a clearer idea of what that peacock actually looks like. I love acanthus leaves and try to grow them in my garden if I can find them. In case you all don't already know, those are oranges, the symbol for marriage.
Not to change the subject from cross-stitch and tapestry, n.b. Fran's comment #28: "mystery and poetry, a charm difficult to explain".[image error]
Here's an image from the Playing With Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage exhibit at the Met. It's not the best example, but what I found on a quick search. These images have the same charm as Cornell's boxes, nothing like the popular roses and cupids you find in greeting cards, extremely witty... human heads on animal bodies, humorous settings combining hand-painted watercolor backgrounds and cut-outs of portrait photography. It's only on view thru May 9th. Highly recommended!

Famous Paintings Recreated in Legohttp://www.oddee.com/item_96540.aspx
"Born in Turin some 56 years ago,Marco Pece is an Italian photographer with a fascination with Lego. An Art Lover himself, his recent work recreates famous paintings, in perfect detail using ubiquitous bricks. After long hours with "playing" with bricks, the final artwork is a fabulous photograph."
