His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. It starts with The Golden Compass (or The Northern Lights, depending on where your edition comes from).

I enjoyed the movie, but after reading the book, I decided that the movie sucked and the book was one of the best stories I'd read in ages.

I second The Chronicles of Narnia. I love those books. The Magician's Nephew is my favourite. I always wanted to go to the Wood Between the Worlds.

Power of Three by Diana Wynne Jones

I only recently remembered the title of this book (with a little help from the Name that Book group on LibraryThing) but I remembered the plot very well because it's one of the best YA books I've ever read. Can't remember how old I was when I read it (and re-read it and re-read it) but I loved it. Now that I know who the author is I'm adding some of her stuff to my wishlist.

The Snow Spider by Jenny Nimmo

The first of a trilogy. I remember them being brilliant books, I'd actually like to re-read them.

Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones.

Great story, especially if you're a dog-lover :)
