Get these damn kids reading! discussion

Hello Everyone. My name is Ashley and I am 22 years old. I currently in college studying to become an elementary teacher. I love to read. My favorite genres are Young Adult Literature, Memoirs, Gay&Lesbian, and Fantasy. I look forward in getting to know the rest of you :)

I am a Mother. I have an 8 year old daughter who is reading at a 6th grade level. I am also raising two step kids, a 11 year old girl and a 14 year old boy, neither of which "like" to read. I joined this group to see if I could get some input and share some input about reading and kids.

The Griffin and Sabine books by Nick Bantock are not easy, but I think they might be useful for you. They are art books, so people who do not like to read are drawn in by the pictures, and the text is hidden. It is an epistolary novel--told by letters--so the reader has to open an envelope and take out the letter to read it. The books are also short, so the reader does not get exhausted. They are worth checking out!

Hester, I haven't heard of these books. Do they look like picture books? Will a kid be embarrassed reading them while his peers all have multi-chapter novels? I'll look into them. Thanks!! Kim

I don't think a kid will be embarrassed. I only discovered them in college. They are aimed for an adult audience, rather than at children. I would love to hear what you think of them after you check them out.

Kim, this series might work for you. The books are about a bionic dog and have lots of kid-type humor. My son read them in elementary school, but I think they would hold up for the middle school ages. The series is especially good for boys who like dogs. The protagonist's buddy is a girl, so it might work there as well, but by middle school the girls may be over the fart stage of humor.

My name is Karen. I am 38 years old and I have 2 step children. I love to read and I have always encouraged kids in my life to read. When my daughter started to read I thought of a way too support her. We now are reading the same book and we plan to talk about it on the weekend. While making cupcakes and having hot chocolate. My son is being a little resistant to the idea but I still buy him books. I think he may come around yet.
