I saw the movie a while ago and enjoyed it for the light fairy tale that it is. I am currently reading the book and it is much the same so far.

Was this the movie with Drew Barrymore?

No, you may be thinking of Ever After with Drew Barrymore which is based on Cinderella. Ever After is a great movie and one of my favorite chick flicks. Ella Enchanted starred Anne Hathaway.

This story has an interesting premise. Ella is given the "gift" of obedience at birth by a well meaning but inept fairy. I enjoyed Ella's rebellion against her curse and the character development that occurs as a result of her having to perform any task someone orders her to do. Ella must obey all orders, even if they are unintentionally given. I was enjoying the originality of the story and was disappointed when it became more apparent that it was based on Cinderella. Overall, it is a charming tale and fun to read. If I remember correctly the movie follows the book quite closely. It is not a very long story so very little is lost in the translation to the screen.
