Hi, although I wonder when it started being acceptable to call it Sci Fi instead of SF? I'll hi for Fantasy too.
Fantasy is often 'lumped' in with SF, although I like both, I have never seen any reason to throw them together. Certainly fantasy shouldn't just be dumped under 'fiction' if all the other genre are getting their own place. I wouldn't go into a bookstore and look under 'fiction' to find the shelves with fantasy.
me neither, im just sayin... hey KSR, could you make a fantasy section, if you hvnt already? a lot of us would like one!
Hi. I write what I like to term 'Science Fantasy' (I think it's an established term, not one I've made up) because what I write is a mixture of both genres. I love reading hard-score science fiction but would never claim to write it, my stories are often set in space, but my planets tend to have a 'mythical feel' although personally I don't go in for fairies and magic - I try to have scientific explanations for paranormal happenings. I have two Sci-fantasy novels about to be published by The Wild Rose Press and a fantasy as part of their 'Muse' anthology to be released this summer. I have to say I hate the term 'Sci-Fi, to me it belittles the genre. I much prefer plain S.F. It seems to be used widely by the media these days though, but it makes me cringe!
Science Fantasy is a genre of it's own that isn't quite as popular these days, but was in the past. In Science Fantasy the "science" part is in the world building by not so much in the plot. For instance if you wrote a western style novel that was about a bunch of people trying to survive in something that looked, felt and smelled like the American old west, but was actually the first settlement on a new planet, that would likely be science fantasy.
Funny you should use that description, Michele. In 1993, I wrote just such a novel. It's going to be published this year by Wild Rose Press. It's called Three Moon Station. I'm calling it a "tfuturistic romance." Ahem.
Hi Reena, I chuckled when I read your comment. I recently received this great e-mail from R.J. Ellory (look him up he is a Best Selling English Author)----- Original Message -----

Well, we are fine, and we have finished Joni-Pip! My son turned the last page, and quietly smiled, and then he looked at me and said, "There's three, aren't there? When's the next one coming?", and - in all honesty - I don't think you could ask for a better response than that!
You give us a small temptation with Chapter One of Book Number Two...and then it is over!
It has been a fabulous journey, because that's what the book is, after all, and it has been like reading a book and watching a movie simultaneously, as there are the printed images, and then the images created by your writing. It is a great accomplishment, and I know that getting the book done in the first place is testament to your ability as a writer, but also - understanding at least some small part of the trials and tribulations you have to go through as a creative writer - I appreciate the sheer guts and persistence necessary to complete a work of this scope.
So there is the question Carrie: When's the next one coming?
I hope all's well with you, and we'll speak soon.
Best wishes, as always,
The Birmingham Branch of The Joni-Pip Appreciation Society.
So one day, lets' hope what you hope, Reena!
Carrie
