OMG That version of Pride&Prejudice is my all time favorite movie!! And if y'all haven't seen it, y'all don't know what you're missing!! (<3Colin Firth to death<3)
My other favorite movie is without a doubt, "The Phantom of the Opera". LOVE Gerard Butler as the Phantom and think Christine is an abosolute ninny for not choosing him (so, not a happy ending to me), but nonetheless, still one of my favs =]
Splendor In The GrassThe Way We Were
(okay both not HEA's but out of this world love story's)
A Summer Place
Little Woman (Winona Ryder)
A Star is Born Barbra/Kristofferson
We danced to the theme song from Ice Castles at our wedding...loved that movie, but it's been years since I have seen it. Lately I've been hooked on the oldies on Turner Classic Movie channel: Random Harvest, The Last Leaf, Dark Victory, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Seventh Veil, Gigi, Portrait of Jennie, Saratoga Trunk, A Foreign Affair. Some with teary endings, some with a HEA, but all wonderful!
I remember seeing Random Harvest when I was a teenager. I remember crying. You know - emotional teenager thing. I think I cried a lot back then. I rarely ever cry now.
Melanie wrote: "Oh, I can still get teary, even over an emotional commercial LOL!"When my hubby was on his 6 month deployments in the Navy I cried at the drop of a hat. Especially those telephone commercials about keeping in touch.
I love "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore; it's one of the best screen adaptations of Cinderella that I've ever seen.
Eryn wrote: "I love "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore; it's one of the best screen adaptations of Cinderella that I've ever seen."Yes, it is definitely my favorite adaptation as well. I love the scene (view spoiler).
It's an old movie but has anyone seen "A Matter of Life and Death" in the States it's called "A Stairway to Heaven" It's a beautiful lyrical piece which covers love, and war, life and death and is really a film about England. I love it and it remains probably my favourite movie ever.
The Time Traveler's Wife, Somewhere in Time, and of course, Casablanca - any one of which can hold me from start to finish, no matter how much laundry is piled up....
This is a great topic... I love so many of the films being talking about here. I love old romantic dramas films even B/W. Pamela, you list covers so many of the movies I love. One of my favs an oldie but goodie is "An Affair to Remember" with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. I know there was a newer version but the older one was the best in my opinion.
Ian, I have seen the movie "Stairway to Heaven" I'm a little foggy on the details but thanks for bring it up, now I have to see it again. :-)
Ah, yes! I posted this pic of a famous kiss in a thread, Arda, and there were people who didn't know who it was. **sigh** That is just a shame.[image error]
Hi :-) I am really enjoying this topic, it's bring back books I've forgotten I've read and loved along with the movies made from them. thanks Sorry about my ramblings I either have nothing to say or too much. ~~ I remember my first Gothic Romance novel, I was 14 and it made that summer a Thrilling Adventure I'll never forget. I'd lay in the sun floating in baby oil, hoping to tan my fair skin only to freckled but by the end of summer if I was lucky they would join together and look like a light tan, (yeah I use to do that before we learned better then too roast in the Sun). Anyone else make this mistake with their skin?
~~ That wonder book was "Dragonwyck" by Anya Seton. I can't tell you how many times I reread that beloved, 1944 original edition which I still have. I found out a few years later that there was an award winning movie of the book. It's a great Movie but I still love that book best.
~~ I thank my mother, who is gone now for my love of books and movies. I spent a lot of my youth reading when I had to stay at home for whatever reason, thx again Mom. lol Within those magic pages I could travel the world even worlds beyond earth, go back in time, be anyone of the heroines, they feed my imagination helping me to dream of what was possible when I grow up.
~~ After Dragonwyck, came Gone with the Wind..........Later in my teens came Doctor Zhivago that was a tough read think it took me a few months to get through it. Never read Nancy Drew or any of the book written for young adults in away I wish I had.... But making up for it now.. I've read all the Twilight books and watch all the movies. lol Anyone remember the Bobbies Twin, my first series books? lol
***Is there a Topic anywhere here about what books started us on the road to being an avid reader? I will keep checking.
I don't think we started one here, Arda. But feel free to start one.I haven't read Dragonwyck but I'll look it up.
Eryn wrote: "I love "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore; it's one of the best screen adaptations of Cinderella that I've ever seen."That's one of my favorite movies, but I am a sucker for fairy tale adaptations.
I also enjoyed the Jane Eyre movie that came out last year.
My favorite romantic drama is BBC North & South. I have watched it about 10 times since first seeing it in January.
Xenia wrote: "My favorite romantic drama is BBC North & South. I have watched it about 10 times since first seeing it in January."Richard Armitage is just perfect in N&S. I really need to buy a personal copy of the series!
Yeah, some of the ones have already been mentioned, but Ever After... definitely. And Dirty Dancing (although I've often questioned the true HEA in that film).
And although this movie didn't get good reviews overall, I really loved "Far and Away" with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (I know I know, the couch-jumper himself, but I really did like him in that movie). It has a super-romance ending. I'd love to read a book with that same story, but WITH sexy-times. haha
Also, the film/mini-series based on Catherine Cookson's novel The Girl. Oh my GOSH I loved that story. I watched that mini-series when I was 15, and that's what prompted me to read the book. It's also what prompted me to add Jonathan Cake to my list of celebrity boyfriends.
Abigail, is that Pride and Prejudice a mini-series with 5 episodes? If so I saw it recently and loved it.
Pamela(AllHoney) wrote: "Abigail, is that Pride and Prejudice a mini-series with 5 episodes? If so I saw it recently and loved it."It's the one with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I think on video it was probably five episodes, but I have the DVD. Two discs. I could watch it over and over again.
If you like the historical miniseries like "North and South" you'd probably like "The Girl." I like the book, too, by Catherine Cookson (it's actually the first romance I ever read, and it's has "frosted glass" sex scenes). Takes place in 1850's Northumberland. Lot's of class issues. You may be able to rent it from your library, and sometimes Netflix has it.
I watched a Catherine Cookson movie on Netflix awhile back, The Glass Virgin. I really liked it, about a wealthy girl whose world crumbles around her and she finds love and a good ending. I've got the book on my wantlist now. They had a bunch of others on there too, but that's the only one I watched so far.
Yes, I've seen The Glass Virgin, that one was good. I just checked Netflix, and "The Girl" is currently available from Netflix through DVD (not instant stream). I highly recommend it. You'll fall in love with Ned Ridley.
Other Catherine Cookson miniseries I'd recommend are The Cinder Path, Tilly Trotter (oh my gosh, this one was good!), and Dinner of Herbs.
Abigail wrote: "I LOVE LOVE LOVE Love Actually. And the BBC Pride and Prejudice."
Love Actually is one of my favorites! I had it on VHS but now I need to find the DVD version since I no longer have a VHS player.
Yes, I watch Love Actually every Christmas. I keep trying to get my BFF to watch it, too. Alas, she always misses it.

Love Gigi
We had the theme from The Mirror Has Two Faces for ours. I think it as called I Finally Found Someone.
