Petra, google "NYTimes bestseller number one listings" for those years and you will get a lot of suggestions.

I was in high school from 1994-1998. Sprinkled among the ever present Steele, Patterson, Clancy, Cornwell, etc. books, I found:John Irving
Wally Lamb
Arundhati Roy
Jon Krakauer
Toni Morrison
Martin Amis
Anna Quindlen
Jacquelyn Mitchard
Cormac McCarthy
Barbara Kingsolver
I am confused, are we supposed to be reading books by authors that were publishing while we were in high school (and therefore having big sales) - for me this would be like JK rowling, David Sedaris, and Chuck Palahniuk. OR are we supposed to be reading books that were popular amongst high school students while we were in high school (as in, people our age was reading them), in which case Douglass Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, JRR Tolkein, would be more suitable.
Wendy, did the book have to be popular or just the author? I'm looking at the time period of 1976 - 1984. John Irving was on the NY Times Bestsellers list and the Publisher Weekly's list. Would I have to read a book he wrote during the time or could I read any book he has published?

I want everyone to really enjoy the book he or she choses to read for this task.
Manday wrote: "I am confused, are we supposed to be reading books by authors that were publishing while we were in high school (and therefore having big sales) - for me this would be like JK rowling, David Sedari..."Depends when you were in high school, I am looking for books popular during high school, but it will be very broad. I'm probably going to read a Vonnegut!

All excellent!!

So is choosing a book or author from the best seller list of one of our high school or college years acceptable? Just want to make sure I am getting the point here.Also- not that I need to widen it, but my college years were longer because I did my BA and MA back to back? If so, I am spanning Fall 1993- Spring 2004! WOW!
Okay, one more question and I'm good! Will a book off of one of these lists count? I'd pick one that corresponds to the years I was in high school/college, of course. http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yal...
Sarah wrote: "I have a question, could we use a popular book from that time according to the lists on goodreads?"That sounds like a great idea! Not that I can speak for Wendy, but i had not thought of that!
I just can't find a list of popular authors for these years!! My high school years were 2000-2005 and this is going to sound bad but my college years were from 2005-2009. I just don't know who the top authors were. I'd like to go back to my high school years anyways because I didn't read a lot back then.
Sarah wrote: "I just can't find a list of popular authors for these years!! "Which years? I might be able to help.
Ms. Anderson if you could help me that would be greatly appreciated. However right now I need to get to bed so hopefully something will be up by the time I wake up tomorrow. Happy reading and thank you!
Sarah~ Looking at your list of favorite authors and from what I just researched from my own years ('99-'07), I know James Patterson and Nicholas Sparks were incredibly popular (Patterson had at least two books on the top of the NYT bestseller list practically every year in the past decade).
Here's a wiki list of Publisher's Weekly bestsellers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publishe... (just click on 2000's decade; I'm using this page for the lists in case anyone else wants to go in and look).
This site is fantastically obnoxious to look at, but it lists NYT bestsellers by year: http://www.hawes.com/no1_f_d.htm You can hit the back arrow on that page and see complete lists by year of all the books that were on the bestseller list.
If Wendy okays the Teen Favorites list I asked her about, you could take a look at that, too.
Finally, this link from the "Popular" task could help--just select a year and choose a book! http://www.goodreads.com/book/popular...
I hope this helps!
Edit: And sorry for being about two seconds late posting this lol
YAY, Harry Potter was popular when I was in high school/college so I can read that. I have been trying to re-read them this last year!
Jayme wrote: "I thought we couldn't reread books."Rereads are allowed as long as the task doesn't specifically prohibit them.
Jayme wrote: "I thought we couldn't reread books."It just says read a book that was popular when you were in High School or college. It doesn't say anything about re-reads.
"Read a book written by an author who was popular when you were in high school or college. "
I was in high school during 1997 (graduated in '99) and Jon Krakauer was on the nonfiction best-seller list in 1997, so I am going to read Under the Banner of Heaven which has been on my bookshelf for a long time.

Read a book written by an author who was popular when you were in high school or college. For example I could read Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Ursula Le Guin, Lloyd Alexander, Norman Mailer, or Tom Wolff for the years (1965-1972).
If you need suggestions OR have suggestions for books to read for this task post them here.
