Mountains discussion

I was wondering if anyone in the group had read some of the books authored by Reinhold Messner? I have plans to tackle a few of his, but since he has written so many, I am looking for recommendations. I was planning on reading some of his newer books, but figured I'd ask.

Also, are there any other books by mountaineers who have climbed all fourteen 8000ers that group members would recommend? Thanks.

I just recently finished "Annapurna:A Women's Place" and found it to be an interesting, sometimes engaging read. It's about an all woman expedition in the 1970's. Has a definite 70's perspective and the struggles of a grueling endeavor with the baggage of wanting to prove something. A melancholy mix of success and tragedy. A worthwhile read for several reasons.

"The Crystal Horizon: Everest-The First Solo Ascent" isn't too shabby. If I remember correctly the first half of the book discusses some history of attempts to summit Everest with some culture. The second half is Messner's account of his summit. I've always had mixed feelings with Messner's writings. However, he does show how he is truly human and even his limits can be pushed in this book. I enjoyed "Reinhold Messner, Free Spirit: A Climber's Life". It's comprehensive, for sure.

For what it's worth, “Los 14 ochomiles de Juanito Oiarzabal” [The Fourteen Eight-Thousanders of Juanito Oiarzabal:], Ediciones Desnivel, 1999 is out there in print, somewhere, in English. I haven't gotten my hands on yet, but when I do... I'll definitely offer it to you.

Thanks Montag, Jake, and Ti. I am indeed interested in Annapurna, after hearing how hard it was from Ed Viesturs' books. And thanks Ti, I do have plans to read the English version of Messner's All Fourteen 8,000ers, which looks to be pretty good, but I'll also look into Juanito's. Keep the recommendations coming everyone.
