What books have helped you with your teaching? Do you have a resource/book you couldn't live without? What books do you read when you're not "ankle deep" in paperwork?

Amy (ldtchr) | 10 comments Right now my backbones are:
Academic Club and Live It Learn It! both by Sally Smith

Book Club materials from Planet Book Club

VandeWalle's Math Series (teaching math developmentally, and attaching activities to standards)

Words by Marcia Henry

And some Visualizing and Verbalizing workbooks from the Linda-Mood Bell stuff.

AND definitely, How the Special Needs Brain Learns from Dr. Sousa!!!!! I've been digging into How the Brain Learns Mathematics again too......

When I'm not in paperwork - or just avoiding it - I read all kinds of things. I try to inspire my students and my own kids to read as much as possible - my students are much harder to get going than my daughters. Since I work with all ages, I tend to read a lot of everything, try to read some non-fiction, but unless they're about the world of learning i don't usually get too far.

Hi Jamie!

I attended the PA Governor's Institute for Early Childhood Educators earlier this month. The focus of the week's program was emotional literacy. If you are interested in finding resources that could help with social/emotional learning, here are 2 websites:

www.casel.org/

www.csee.net/climate/

I hope this helps!

Renee

Amy (ldtchr) | 10 comments We have a good ASD resource center around here and they have some solid materials regarding social skills. One is at: http://www.thegraycenter.org/store/in...

Kate (oregonkate) | 4 comments Michelle Garcia Winner has several good books out for dealing with social groups/ASD. I am using some of her stuff for a social group with kids that aren't necessarily diagnosed as ASD but who benefit from social training.

I have some of her materials also; I find that most of my students fall within the severely impaired perspective taker range so the curriculum is not so helpful to me. I hope to be involved in a summer social skills program for higher-functioning individuals where we might be able to use her activities.

There is also another set of books I use put out by Thinking Publications but I don't have the name of them at my finger tips. It has activities that deal with problem solving, reputation, grooming etc. It is aimed at middle school to high school age kids. I am using it with a group of boys, three with high functioning Aspergers, (and labeled as TAG) one with LD but is on referral for ASD. I will look at the book next time I am in my car and add it to this board.

Hi all

I apologize for being an invisible moderator. My life is so busy at times that I forget that I have a group on Goodreads!

I presented an Inservice on nonverbal communication in February. I was consumed with gathering information and learning how to present to a group of teachers and speech therapists - I was presenting on the Friday afternoon before our February break! My presentation was Nonverbal Communication and featured an episode from Seinfeld where George had grapefruit juice in his eye and he winked all day. Overall it was well received...and I survived!

I just realized these posts are very old. So this may be mute but this is a great social learning curriculum. In case you could still use it! http://www.socialthinking.com/index.p...

I just checked out that website and thought it was great. As someone who mentors kids with ASD...it will be a resource I will pass on and use.

Jane (janieness) | 5 comments Good! I just had a student join my caseload who came from and ED classroom. I'm planning on trying to get the social thinking curriculum approved and ordered for him as well as some of my other students. It's a great program.
