If Only... discussion

If only I could say here is where you can give your input on what you think the next contest topic should be. Try to make it something everyone can write about :D Not like the history of toothbrushes. (I know, I know - it's a wonderful topic, but I guess some people just can't appreciate it...I think I need to get more sleep)

I topic…something about nature? flowers? trees?
what about a short story?

How about a short-short story, say 500 words. I think anybody could easily manage that. You might get lots of submissions.


Now about those toothbrushes......

Back in the day, long before the rise and fall of the Roman Empire there was a man named Jasper that worked for a futuristic company called the Fuller Toothbrush company. He couldn't get the idea out of his head as he saw he could make a fortune in trades off this distant futuristic venture that would help people all through0ut the fertile valley, and beyond. He set up shop in an old cave and the voice of some Deity came to him and set him straight...while he slept. The Deity (supply your own here ______________) said, "This is not the way to think this idea out. Manufacturing will not arise for another thousand years. Look to mother nature to provide what it is you need for teeth."
It made complete sense to Jasper. The next day he got a bunch of twigs together and attached some course leaves to them in close-knit rows. The leaves were rolled tight and were put together by neighborhood farm children. He smiled as the first batch was ready by noon. He looked up at the mountins toward Deity's (_______________) home and smailed to himself. He was manufacturing after all. "HHMMPPPHH," was all he said!!!
He got to town and traded his new tooth product like mad. Lots of great stuff found it's way into Jasper's hands. A couple hours later he was all traded out. He packed up all his newly acquired goodies and prepared to leave the city. Just as he made his way out of town, reaching the boudaries, an angry mob appeared at the city gates. Upon noticing Jasper leaving the area they took chase. Hearing the sound of lots of people running and shouting Jasper turned and noticed all their mouths were swollen. It was then he became aware that what they were running after, was him! He ran like a madman, in an attempt
to put lots of distance between hiself and the maddened mob. Their toothbrushes had been made with stinging nettles!!!
High up in the Mountains, Deity (______________) looked down upon the doomed man. "HHHMMMPPPHHH," was all he said before he laughed so uproariously that it caused a landslide of catastrophic proportions.
Tales of the doomed city, having spread for centuries, finally led to the creation of the Fuller Toothbrush company as seen in Jasper's Dreams.

HA! - if only I could say you just made my that much better. :D Very awesome. Be assured I fully appreciated your toothbrush-ness. I'd probably say the Deity was Demeter, the earth goddess. I doubt she'd really like manufacturing, and plants are her thing. Though I hadn't realized she had such a well-developed sense of humor...
Short story? That's always kind of been an option so far, since any kind of contribution is allowed. Maybe we could just have an open contest for any writing? Though that would be difficult to judge.
Nature sounds good - only we just did animals (yes, I know it's different) and for me it sounds like a slightly harder topic. I don't know. Now, if we could incorporate fantasy in there...It'd be really fun to do a tree nymph or something.

If the TB story wasn't a fractured fairy tale fantasy I don't know what is. I was tired when I wrote it and now I'm cringing at all the typos (which I'll fix tonight).
When I sent the story I got an error message back and the story was...GONE!!!! I thought to myself "Oh Well," but now I see it posted.
I know we always write stories of some kind, I juast posed a short-short story contest because most anyone can write 500 words or less. Anything you guys (non gender term) want to write I'll be there. If it's fantasy then I'll pull out the arsenal. I know a few dragons that are chompin' at the bit to have their tales told.

Drama I've never tried but I have written quite a bit of horror. the problem is that this is mostly a fantasy setting. Then again...Fantasy/horror does have a nice ring to it!!!

Once we get more opinions, we should make a poll to get a general idea of what we want next - we can alter it after, but it might be a good (additional) starting point.
Oh, you know what would be fun? A mock battle with our characters :D Totally off topic - John's arsenal comment sparked it.

Dragons do sound awesome to me. And it's not like we won't have a whole bunch of contests or anything. :D Maybe even one on toothbrushes or vacuums (in which case there'd be some clear favorites to win - though I did write about toothpaste and dragons once...)

Dragon's use humans for floss, but...that's another story. I'd do a Dragon story, I'm game.

Horror sounds good. I wrote a short horror story for my Language Arts class and am planning on turning it into a series.

It seems like we have three clear nominations: Fantasy/dragons, horror and drama. It might be a good idea to do two specialized contests at once and then the third for our next bout of contesting.
I'll start a poll and see what results we get :)
