Adrienne (a-town) | 308 comments I hope this is the right folder...

I saw this questionnaire on another site and I thought it might be fun to do here:

1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

message 2: by Kate (new)

Kate | 119 comments 1. I will usually try to be careful with the spine, but it depends on the awkwardness of the book.

2. I use bookmarks.. and usually anything that I can find nearby, But I prefer paper ones to metal.

3. I don't write in my books, mostly because I don't know what to say..what do people write in them?

4. My books tend to get tossed around a bit as I don't have a lot of room for them. They get put into handbags too.

5.Very rarely, most of the time I close them

6. I shower, so I don't read them in the bath, Sometimes I may have wet hands, I wouldn't read them in the rain.

7. The ones that fit are lined up on the shelf. Others are stacked or standing on the left over space in front of the rows, some are on the floor in piles, some are on my desk. (Ever since I joined goodreads my book collection has taken on a life of its own)

8. I like hardcovers and will generally try to look after them better as they tend to cost more. I also remove the dustjacket when I read as they get in the way and end up bent or damaged because of the awkwardness of some hardcovers. It goes back on as soon as I've finished

9. I have a mixture. Some of my teen/childhood best friends are battered and worn, some I've tried to keep in good condition.

message 3: by Steph (new)

Steph | 1 comments 1. I crack them open.. and if it's a paperback, I sometimes flip the cover open too. I'm bad.

2. I use paper ones mostly. I have a metal one, but I find it kind of a pain because it's always falling out so I only use it in really heavy books.

3. Nope, never ever.

4. I've been known to shove a book into my purse without much thought. Not on the floor though, that's just messy.

5. Not lately. Probably at one point or another I have.

6. I wish I could read in the bath, but I get terrified of dropping it in and rendering the book un-readable.

7. There are most of them on the bookshelf, and then some in a pile on the floor. I'm running out of space. Some are on top of the lined up books in the shelf, too.

8. I usually take the dust protector off of hardcovers when I'm taking the book out and about because something really bothers me about torn dust protectors.. other than that, nope.

9. My books are loved in a battered way, for sure. One of my favourite books has pencil marks on it from being thrown in a book bag with school odds and ends. All of my other favourite books have fared about the same, with cover corners fallen off and random marks here and there.

message 4: by Kandice (new)

Kandice 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I am very careful with the spines. Enough so that if it's a book I plan on keeping to re-read, I will replace a cracked spine if at all possible.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I never dogear pages, and always use bookmarks. I'm not a fan of the metal ones because they are so thick. I like the flexible plastic with tassles the best, but paper or material is fine too as long as it's not too thick.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I write in "learning" books. Not novels, really, but books I am reading to learn something, or research. Those I will mark all up with pencil, pen, highlighter, whatever. To mark something for later reference in a novel I put a post-it sticking out the side at the right page.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I always carry a book in my bookbag, but I am also pretty careful with them. I take them everywhere, so they do end up on a floor or seat occasionally, but always protected or watched:)

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Never

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I sometimes bathe with them, but only when I've dried my hands and I always stand up to place them on the vanity as opposed to the floor when I am ready to do actual "bathing".

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Lined up in a lot of different kinds of order. My TBR designated shelf is stacked flatways, so I can have more differentiated piles.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Not really, but I prefer hardbacks for books I want to keep.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Depends on the book and how long I've had it. I have some Stephen King books I've had over 25 years and they are...well worn, to say the least.

message 5: by Andreea (new)

Andreea (andyyy) | 117 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
Erm, generally you can only break the spines of British/American books. Continental European books are less fragile. I occasionally break it, but it's always by accident.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use bookmarks a lot, but it's usually just random bits of paper or post-its.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I write small marks in pencil sometimes, to remind myself of important quotes/information and very rarely a few words if I want to explain a reference or something.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I leave my books everywhere. It has little to do with respect, I'm just a messy person and I read/flip through a lot books at the same time.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Sometimes.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I usually never bathe/shower for more than 15. I occasionally spill things on my books, but never purposely and needlessly expose them to water/other liquids.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Some are on bookshelves, some spread out on my dest/night stand, some are on the floor next to my desk, others under my bed. Again, I'm not the most organized person in the world and I don't mind it.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Well, paperbacks (especially thick ones) are more prone to damage, so I pay special care to them.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
I don't like tearing my books and if a volume I love is unusually worn, I'll buy another one, but generally speaking I'm not obsessed with the way my books look.

message 6: by El (new)

El 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I do try to be careful with the spines, especially if they're new books. If they're used and already a bit dinged up, I do my best not to lose any pages at least.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I have an aversion towards dog-earring books. I use bookmarks of a wide variety - some are real bookmarks, others are scraplets I find lying around.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I very rarely write in my books. Sometimes I make little marks just indicating lines I enjoyed, and only in books I plan to keep forever-and-ever. My copy of The Handmaid's Tale has been written in the most from all the papers I had to write on it in college. Plus it's near and dear to my heart anyway. Do not highlight. I will erase pencil marks from library books. No, I'm not kidding about that.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Wherever my books go, they are never "tossed". I usually hand-carry a book to and from work, or if it's raining I will put it in my shoulder bag.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Occasionally, but not for long periods of time. It's generally for as long as it takes me to rearrange the pillows or to get a glass of water. My boyfriend is really bad at this - his bedside table has five books all lying face-down, piled up on one another. Drives me crazy. I try not to look at it.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
When I take a bath I generally like to have a book with me. But I make sure my hands are dry. Read in the rain only under an umbrella or other sort of awning.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Mostly on bookshelves. If we go to a book sale or used bookstore and walk out with armfuls of books, they might sit on the floor for a while until we find a new living space for them.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Not really. Again, if they're new copies I try to maintain their new appearance.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
It depends on the book. Some books are in pristine condition because of the sort of book it is. Others are clearly well-loved. (Anyone who has worked in a used bookstore knows that these are not "used" books, but they are "well-loved".) If a book becomes well-loved to the point of destruction, I'll buy a new copy. But I can't remember the last time I wore out a book. Generally when I buy a book for the second or third time it is because someone borrowed/stole/lost my copy or someone else has destroyed it beyond recognition. And then those people are no longer my friend.

message 7: by Jackie (last edited Mar 30, 2010 08:31AM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I'm semi-careful. If it's a library book I don't care much, but with my own books I crack them enough so they won't bend and get too many lines.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Yes! I ♥ bookmarks. I have a weird quirk where I use two. One for where I started reading that day and one for where I left off for the day. It gives me great satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment to see many pages in between the bookmarks at the end of the day. I prefer the plastic or material ones with the tassles, but I have a nice ribbon one with beads that I adore too. I also have a metal one with a charm at the end that I sometimes use. If all else fails a folded up post it note will do. I absolutely do not dog-ear...that's an abomination.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

Nope, but I have for a bookclub. I only did it because I was given permission to do so, but I don't like writing in my own books unless it's a text book. I do highlight and try to keep it in the margins.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

No tossing or brutal shoving. I treat all my books gently and with respect....unless of course I hate the book then I wouldn't hesitate to toss it or shove it off in a corner.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

I wouldn't dream of it. I usually find something nearby to place in it.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Never and I wouldn't because I'm a clutz.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

I have no bookshelves at the moment, so my books are neatly stacked in bags on my closet floor or neatly crammed into hidden shelves.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Not really. Although I may be a bit rougher with a hardcover.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

If it's a new book I cherish it and it will be carefully cared for, but if it's a used book I don't care as much. I don't normally read books twice or keep all the books I buy/read so I try to be careful with the books I have because most likely it's going to be donated or given away to a friend. I don't want people to think bad of me because of the condition of my books.

message 8: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I don't really even think about that actually.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I always use bookmarks. Usually those cards that fall out of magazines. They are useful for something!

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? Not since school.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? I don't throw them around and be rough or anything, but you never know where one might end up!

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Rarely...but I have done it before for a couple minutes.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? Rarely...but again, I have.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? Stacked in various places.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? No.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? If its fiction, I usually give it away when done (if it wasn't borrowed in the first place). I guess I enjoy the content while reading it and then don't care. :-)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 906 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I'm careful with mine, I'll open them as far they'll go without forcing them.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I like to use paper bookmarks, so much that I enjoy designing special ones for specific books that I like to reread a lot.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
For the longest time I refused to write in any of my books, but I do now have a very few exceptions, like a couple of reference books. But even with those I only use pencil and make as few marks as needed.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I don't toss, but I do tend to leave books on the floor or in my book bag.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Never! I don't want to risk damaging the bindings.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Not a chance! Water and paper definately do not mix. :-)

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
All of the above. I have my books lined up on the bookshelf with books stacked on top in empty spaces.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Not really, I don't discrimiante, I treat all of my books equally. :-)

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Since I like to reread and collect, I do my best to treat them like an item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for.

message 10: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I AM VERY CAREFUL WITH MY BOOKS PERIOD! I GET VERY SAD WHEN I SEE CRACKED OR BROKEN SPINES.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? THIS IS ALSO A PET PEEVE OF MINE! I ALWAYS USE A BOOKMARK, SOMETIMES ITS STORE BOUGHT AND WAS A GIFT, OR SOMETIMES ITS A NOTE FROM MY BOYS OR A FRIEND, OR POSSIBLY A PICTURE OF ONE OF MY SONS.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I DON'T WRITE IN BOOKS AT ALL!

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? I USE BOOK COVERS AT ALL TIMES TO KEEP MY BOOKS IN GOOD CONDITION. SO I'M VERY CAREFUL WITH THEM AND ALWAYS TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? NEVER! :(

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? NEVER! I'M TOO WORRIED ABOUT RUINING THEM!

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? I HAVE MANY FULL TO THE LIMIT BOOKSHELVES, PLUS PILES EVERYWHERE.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? NOT AT ALL! ALL BOOKS SHOULD BE RESPECTED.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? MY BOOKS ARE WELL-USED AND WELL-LOVED, BUT APPRECIATED AND CARED FOR. LIKE I MENTIONED BEFORE, ITS A PET PEEVE OF MINE WHEN I SEE SOMEONE FOLDING OVER PAGES, CRACKING SPINES ORE ANY NUMBER OF OTHER THINGS THAT I FEEL DISRESPECT THE BOOK. BOOKS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE!

message 11: by Caz (new)

Caz | 18 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I'm not really certain what you mean by crack the spines, but I'm not all that careful with them.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use bookmarks, either ones that are pretty much a piece of ribbon with things at both ends or those magnetic paper ones.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
Nope no writing on them, unless they're school ones we have to analyze.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Erm, I'm bad, my books get tossed about quite a bit :P

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Not often, but sometimes

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Never bathe with them, I'd be too worried about dropping them in the tub. I occasionally hold them with wet hands, but not often. I wouldn't read in the rain unless I was under a shelter. I do sometimes accidentally spill stuff on my books though, and sometimes things leak in my bag (eg a water bottle) so this gets on my book.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
The ones I own are on shelves in a cupboard, but most of my books are from the library, so I don't have to worry about the storage so much, the ones I have out from the library are kept in a pile on a table in my bedroom, so they are easy to find.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
No not really.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Well they aren't horribly battered but they're more like a teddy than a photo album! :) x

message 12: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie | 1286 comments 1. I'm a spine cracker for sure; so many books are bound so close to the printing, particularly paperbacks. I also fold back paperbacks (:

2. I dog ear unless it's a library book or very old and/or valuable.

3. Don't write in them at all.

4. Always have a book in the purse, a couple tossed on the floor in the back of the car, several tossed on the floor around my bed until I clean them up. I am not careful apparently.

5. Face down regularly, esp. in the bathroom on the vanity.

6. Read every day in the bath, but would not take a book of any value or of any great age. Some of my favorites such as Lucia series are water spotted, broken spined and a right mess. But I still love them.

7. Lined up on bookshelves except as mentioned above. Getting more shelves installed in the hope of sorting them and storing them more appropriately.

Also on the floor in stacks.

8. Paperbacks I view as disposable except in special cases (though I keep them. Perhaps replaceable would be more to the point.). They get pretty beat up if I'm bathing, travelling, eating, etc.

9. I am more than battered teddy bear type (except for the vintage books which would not take the strain) but are cared for in the greater sense--on bookshelves, even in the bathroom, dusted regularly, taped if ripped, etc.

I view run of the mill books, paperbacks especially, as disposable since they won't last more than a few years anyway due to cheap paper and construction and are easily replaceable. I don't see a need to "venerate" them. Hardbacks I am a little more careful of, but I tend to buy used anyway, so they come to me in various states.

message 13: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? The sound of a spine cracking makes me cringe. I work in a library and I've seen what happens to books after the spine is broken and then the book is read 2 or 3 more times. It ain't pretty.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
Definitely bookmarks. I have a collection. I look through my hundreds (literally) of bookmarks and choose the one that best fits my mood.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
If I'm loaning a book, I'll put an address label in the front cover. If I feel the need to write a note to myself, I use a Post-It note.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I toss my books sometimes. I threw a book once. Freaked my husband out no end. He thought there was something wrong with me.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Not often. Rarely.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I have been guilty of reading a book in the bathtub, but I keep my hands out of the water until after I'm done with the book.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
They used to be alphabetical, but it required too much shifting, so they are lined up neatly, but sometimes double shelved (one row in front of the other).

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
It's true, I do. I paid more the hardcover, so I generally try to take care of it.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Not too many of my books are tattered. And if they are, it certainly wasn't me who did it.

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I’m damn careful with the spines, don’t want to damage the book now!

Yes I use book marks which are sometimes just the receipt from the bookstore

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I only write in a book if its one of my study texts, not novels.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Depends on the book if it’s a favourite well all respect is due.

No, I use a bookmark

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Never, never, never

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Novels on the shelves, study stuff are currently on the floor, etc.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Well, hardcovers cost more, should be more careful with them.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Well actually I love books more than all that stuff you mentioned there!!!

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

Nope! I'll crack a book to make it lay flat, no problem.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

99% dog-ear, 1% random scrap of paper

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I write my name (in pen) in the book, or use my lovely personalized bookplates for especially cherished books.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

If I am reading in bed and get sleepy I will sometimes dog-ear the page (gasp!) and toss the book on the floor.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Absolutely!

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I have been known to read in the tub. I don't "read in the rain" but then again I try not to do anything in the rain--I vastly prefer shelter.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Yes, yes, and yes.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

No, though hardbacks can take a bit more abuse than paperbacks.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I think I've made my careless book-love pretty obvious.

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments 1. SPINES:
I am very careful with my own books. It hurts me when I break the spines of my books.

2. BOOKMARKS:
I'll use just about anything for a bookmark, but I will not dog ear my pages.

3. WRITING:
Depends on the book and why I have it. Classics and books for class I will write in. Text books get written all over. Books that I read simply for pleasure? Nothing. No writing. I keep them looking like new for as long as I possibly can.

4. FLOOR?
A little bit of both. I'll put it on the floor, or on the bag, but I am careful with where and how I set them down. They go everywhere, but I'm careful when I set them down.

5. FACEDOWN?
Not really. I just grab a random piece of paper or cardboard for a bookmark. Sometimes I use gum... ;)

6. WATER?
No!! NEVER!! I have water damage to my books more than almost anything else! (I do bathe with library books though... But, I'm SUPER careful!)

7. SHELVING:
I constantly reorganize how my books are shelved so that they look as good as possible. I try to keep them semi-organized and there is a method to the madness although not everyone can see what it is... Most of my books are in boxes right now though... So sad.

8. SOFT v. HARD COVER:
Sometimes. I try to treat my books equally, and keep them all in pristine condition. However, I do buy books in hardcover when I'm more concerned with them lasting longer, and staying in great condition. I know they'll last longer.

9. CARED FOR?
I try to keep them cherised. I like to think that the more care I take of them, the more loved they are. However, there are a few books I have read, and loved to death. I like keeping my books as pretty as possible though.

message 17: by Felina (last edited May 14, 2010 01:57PM) (new)

Felina 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I don't worry about it to much as in I would probably still buy a used book that had a beat up spine but I don't think I actually do that to my books.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Always bookmarks, receipts, candy wrappers or scraps of paper. Never dog-ears. I usually use the purchase receipt for bookmarks. I have all the original purchase receipts for my Harry Potter books as well as the movie stubbs for the last 3 movies in each of the books. I'm very proud of that.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

If the subject matter requires it. And if I write in a book I keep it. I would never mar a book I intended to give away/sell. I used to automatically put my name on everybook then I found paperbackswap.com and stopped.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I have books on the floor and books in bags but I put them there tenderly. It pains me to have a book with a creased front cover.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Only momentarily, like if I run to the restroom or for a glass of water.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Absolutely not. I don't like to bathe. Don't freak out I do it everyday but I don't enjoy the process. I have alot of long hair and the act of bathing takes entirely to long as it is. I wouldn't throw reading into the mix.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Most are on book shelves. The left overs are everywhere. I think piles of books makes a house infinately more lovely.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I don't care to own hardcovers so I have very few but I am very protective of their little paper covers. I will usually put them aside when I actually read the hardback. I prefer to own paperbacks.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

My favorite books have been pushed on so many people that they look very well read. I like it that way. I had a friend who borrowed one of my books and took it with her to Egypt. It came back a bit battered but who cares...it was in Egypt.

Ems Loves to Read (esondie) | 0 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

*No, no, no! No cracking of the spines here. I used to loan out my books and if they'd come back with cracks, the borrower had to buy me a new copy. I no longer loan books under any circumstances.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

*With my personal books, I use bookmarks and would never dream of dog-earing them. With textbooks, though, I'll dog-ear.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

*Only in textbooks. I refuse to write in my others. I use highlighters, pens, and pencils for those, but don't do the pages of pink thing. I try to only use yellow so it's not as obvious, and I don't highlight for pages and pages.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

*I have a special bag that I use for all my currently-reading books. They're placed inside very carefully to avoid damage.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

*No. I always have a bookmark on hand.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

*I bathe with them, and I'm proud to say that I've never ruined a book in the bath yet! I did try to shower with one once as a young teen, and that didn't go so well. I do not ever handle books with wet hands or take them out in the rain.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

*bookshelves according to how much I love them, the genre, the author, and size.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

*I try very hard to keep all of my books in pristine condition. With my absolute favorites, I have them in both hardback and paperback. I read the paperbacks until they're worn through (and then buy new copies), but keep the hardbacks in pristine condition.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

*Both. Some of my absolute favorites are threadbare, to borrow a clothing term. You can tell which ones I've read only once or twice by the condition they're in. I try really hard to keep them all nice, but some just get used more than others. You can definitely tell which ones I read over and over.

Cheryl (CherylsPearls) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

Eeeek! NEVER!

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Bookmarks, definitely, and only ones that won't mark up my book. I never dog-ear corners whether the book is mine, a friend's or belongs to the library.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

No writing in my books...ever. Ok, I did highlight and make some notes in my textbooks in college! You caught me there! New books I will sometimes put my name and the date I bought them on one of the outer leaves.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I never toss my books at all; never put them in the floor. I put borrowed library books into a bag to bring them home and to return them but they are stacked neatly and not thrown in. I love all my books, so of course they are treated tenderly and with great respect.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Another "eeek!" Never.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

No. I could never figure out how anyone could manage to read in the tub at all. Hold them with wet hands? No. No, I don't read out in the rain. If I was caught in the rain with a book out, I guess I would shove it up into my blouse to keep it from getting wet! lol No books near water, please.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Yes, lined up and no cramming! No books on the floor, alone or in stacks.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

No. Books are books.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I rarely buy paperbacks but I do have some from school days; some from contests and giveaways, too. I treat them with the same respect and care. No discrimination based on age, either. However, I do have some delicate books I've rescued that get special care, such as those from the 19th century. Those get extra respect for surviving as long as they have! lol

Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) | 166 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I break the spine every 50 pages so it opens evenly. And I have OCD.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use 2 etsy-made bookmarks a friend gave me, a promotion card from an old hip-hop CD, and a ribon.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I put sticky notes in books and write on them.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
The latter.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Only if I'm in a rush.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Neither of us ever get wet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
I have books in shelves and in lockers; stacked tetris style.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Not usually.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
I hide them away like a red-headed step child.

Rosabelle Purnama | 87 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I'm quite careful with the spines and do not make the books lay flat. I hate it when the spine breaks...

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Another thing that I don't like to do to my books is to dog-ear the corners.. it left a mark and not good to see. I always use bookmarks, even if i don't happen to carry the proper one, I use any paper that I have on hand. My usual bookmarks are paper ones.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I don't write in my books. I only write my name on one of the first few pages of the cover to mark it as my own :) If I need to make a note or highlight a quote I use post it notes or write it down in a small notebook that I use to record my favorite quotes or other things from the book

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I treat my books tenderly (almost always..) but my bookshelf is now overflowing, so some of the books are on the floor at the moment for lack of space

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Unfortunately I do this a couple of times, but I don't most of the time.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Never...

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

My books are lined up on a bookshelf. But my bookshelf is very very full at the moment, so some of my newer purchases are currently stacked on the floor

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I rarely buy hardcovers, so most of my books are paperbacks. I only have about 2 or 3 hardcovers at the most.. so I don't make a distinction of book care between hardcover and paperbacks

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Hmm for me, it's mostly like an item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for.

Liz (busy91) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

They crack in the process of reading, I don't force them flat.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Sometimes I dog-ear, but I usually use paper bookmarks.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

Non-fiction books get written/highlighted in. In pen or pencil.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I don't toss books on the floor, mabe on a table. I'm not too tender with them usually. Depends on the book.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

I have been known to.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I don't 'bathe'...LOL.
I don't like my books wet. When I carry them out in the street, I wrap them in a plastic bag, just in case it rains.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Mostly lined up on the bookshelf. some of them are every which way though, because I have so many.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Nope.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I'm more the item of clothing person. I appreciate my books, but I do take care of them.

Brittany Welna | 4 comments 1.I try to be careful with them, it bothers me when I put a book down and the top wont lay flat. But at the same time, I don't like when the book resists opening so you can't read the parts near the inside. So then I would kind of force it open. I try to put them down on the side i was opening more so the book stays flat.
...that was unnecessarily detailed.

2. No bookmarks usually. I just remember my place. However I do sometimes use old train ticket stubs. Currently, i have the beginnings to a string friendship-type bracelet holding my page.

3. I really dislike writing in books. I can never figure out how to maneuver the pencil with the book so that it's not awkward while I'm trying to read. It's like an unnecessary burden to me, haha.
But I don't even write my name in it either.

4. I treat them moderately well... depends on the book and the state it is already in. New Harry Potter books are treated like my mother's best china dishes haha. Other are taken care reasonably. I have tossed a book down from my stairs to my bed though once or twice... it's a soft landing though?! No tossing on the floor or jamming into bags, of course.

5. Sometimes, not usually, unless I'm coming right back to it.

6. Wet books! They'd get so ruined! No no no. I don't do that.

7. They are stacked on a shelf. Two main piles: Recently-Read and To-be-Read. And then behind those and on other shelves are older books that I've already read. It's getting to that point where I have to fit them in where ever they will fit.

8. Hardcovers, in particular, favorite books (i.e. Harry potter books) I will sometimes take off the book jacket/sleeve (what is that thing called?) I also appreciate that a hardcover keeps the book lying flat. That's a plus.

9. I treat them reasonably well. And for the favorite books, they get extra special treatment. My paranoia comes in when I loan my books to other people... it makes me really worried and I hate doing it. As much as I love telling people about favorite books that I've just read... I'm wary about actually lending them my book because I hate the idea of them losing it or making a mess of it or never getting it back!

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Yeah, I shove them into my bag, across the floor etc

it doesn't really matter to me so long as I am conmfy

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I make bookmarks but I just tend to use whatever is in front of me whether a bookmark or a business card but I never dog-ear it

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I have a stamp that I use but only for the books I like or plan on keeping forever. I only write in textbooks and I may leave a small pencil dot on a paragraph of a quote that I really like so then I would write it in my book journal later but erase the pencil mark later

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I love my books but they are everyehere. I tend to read rather quickly so I really don't get a chance to destroy them per say. Most of my books are still in new condition

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Of course. I really think most people do.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
First I don't do baths and second it is very hard to read comfortably in the rain so my books are never wet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
All on bookshelves even if they are crammed in there or on top of each other. There are no books on the floor.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
I perfer paperbacks but if I see a good sale on a book I am interestedin and it is cheap or on sale then I will buy hardcovers.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
My books are very well cherished. My daughter's first word was book because I always have them on hand. I love them like I love life!

Lauren 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I like to be careful with the spines. Sometimes it is hard to read the inside of the page and not crack the spine a little though.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? Always bookmarks. I have a metal one I got on a trip a few years ago, if it's not around a scrap of paper will do. I never dog ear the corners though.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? No, never. The one exception being university textbooks may have some highlighting or a couple notes to clarify points.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? Yes I toss my books on the floor, but not carelessly. I do like for them to last in good condition as long as possible.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? On occassion, I prefer my bookmark though.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? I'm not a bath person so no. I also am not a reading whilst in the rain type so no to that as well.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? Lined up on bookshelves, alphabetized by authors name and seperated by "read" and "unread"

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? Not generally. I prefer paperbacks and have very few hard cover books.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? My most loved books are often years old and you can tell that they have been read numerous times by the way the pages are "fluffed" and sometimes marks on them. I also buy many used books so the condition is not always up to me alone.

message 27: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 140 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I crack my books open when they aren't flat. It makes it easier to read the inside pages, and I'm all about being comfortable when I read.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I actually do both. I will dog-ear a page if I don't have a bookmark handy. Usually I use library receipts or random scraps of paper for my bookmarks. I guess I just don't feel like spending money on something that I don't really need and will probably lose anyway.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
Yes, I write in my books. Usually I just underline my favorite lines in pencil, though I occasionally write notes as well. I don't usually use highlighters unless I'm reading a textbook. Part of the reason I love used books is finding where other people have underlined or written in them. It's almost like discussing a book with a stranger.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I have been known to set my books no the floor next to my bed. I almost always read in bed, so if I'm about to go to sleep I just set the book down on the floor next to my head. I also put books in my backpack so I can read them between classes if I have any free time. Still, I'm pretty careful about how my things are organized in my backpack, partially because of the books and partially because I keep my oboe and sheet music in there too. I guess I'm in the middle between tender and careless.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Yes. I usually do that if I'm interrupted in the middle of reading. I just set the book down, go do whatever the person wants, and then come back and read.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I don't bathe with my books because I only take showers, and that doesn't really work. I'm generally pretty careful about getting books wet, though occasionally I will get a little of whatever I'm eating on my book, which is pretty similar.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
I try to put them on a bookshelf, though sometimes I stack them on the shelf rather than line them up neatly. It just depends on the size of the book and the shelf. I don't usually keep stacks of books on my floor, though I have been known to stack them on my desk.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Not really. I think I am equally careful with all of my books. If anything I'm more careful with paperbacks, because I don't want to rip the covers. Hardbacks are pretty well protected.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
I think mine are in between the two. I don't take extra measures to protect my books, but I'm not careless with them either. They end up being a little rough on the corners, with cracked spines, dog-eared pages, underlines, and a few food stains in the margins, but I've never had a book fall apart on me, no matter how long I've kept it, and you can always clearly read every word on the page. I guess that's really what's important.

message 29: by Max (last edited Jul 24, 2010 01:40PM) (new)

Max 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

The only time I ever mind hurting the spine is if it causes the pages of the book to fall out. So I'm generally careful not to let that happen. Other than that, I probably prefer for the spines to be a bit cracked, since it makes reading the book a lot easier, the wider I can open it.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Unless I'm reading Infinite Jest (in which I use one soft bookmark, one metal bookmark, and dog-ear the corners of pages I know I'll have to come back to in the future) I like to use nice bookmarks. Right now I'm using a multi-colored, Native-American-looking thin, threaded bracelet that I use to keep track of my reading instead of tying around my wrist. Other times I use metal bookmarks from B&N that have some of my favorite sayings/quotes.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I never write in my books, unless its for a class. Generally because if I'm reading a book for recreation, writing in the margins/highlighting/etc. makes it feel too much like work. I like to just enjoy my reading. Then when it comes to classwork, I do what I must.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Books get enough of my respect when I'm actually reading them. I don't feel the need to treat them like my tender lover. I'm careful enough not to destroy my books, but I won't mind tossing one aside, and I won't cry over spilt milk, or coffee.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Only if I'll get right back to reading it. Otherwise, not really... I think that's what leads to pages falling out, which I can't stand.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Despite my general nonchalance towards book care, I don't like my books getting wet. And the last time I took a bath was with my sister (don't worry, I was 3), though I probably wouldn't mind reading in the tub. In fact, it seems pretty nice. In fact, I might draw myself a nice candle-lit bubble bath and read in a bit...

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Lined up on a few bookshelves, categorized by genre, then within genre by author, segregated by favorites and not-so-favorites. I love organizing my books on my bookshelves, because I am, as my best friend likes to inform me on a daily basis, strange (in a good way, I hope).

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

All books are equal! Down with book inequality!

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I love books that are used -- really used. I love giving them love, ya know? And the only way I can tell that books are given love (aka are read) is if they're a bit worn down, not at all in tip-top shape. I like the teddy bear comparison. Books are my acute, didactic teddy bears. Why would anyone not want to hug the crap out of their teddy bear, even if it did lead to a bit wear and tear?

Caity (elimarna) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I'm pretty careful with them. I have to have the page pretty flat in front of my face and fully lit in order to read it. Some days I think I might have dyslexia or something because I'll mix up letters and words for days on end and not catch on. You can always tell which books I like the most, though, because they're the ones that tend to get beat up the most.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I used to dog-ear the corners, but now I use bookmarks, usually paper. The metal ones are too expensive. Sometimes I just use a receipt or something, if I can't find one of my dozens of bookmarks.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

NO! I could not write in my precious books, unless it's a textbook. If I have to highlight or mark up a textbook that is one thing, but I never write in any of my other books.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Sometimes they end up on the floor, when I was in school they would spend a lot of time in a backpack, but I never just tossed them in unless I was in a hurry. Now they are kept on shelves, my bedside table, or my bed. When I take one with me when I go out, my purse is big enough that I can fit my book in nicely.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Sometimes, but only if I know I'll get back to it in less than 10 minutes, but even that is rare. I usually look for something to mark my spot, or else make a note of the page number so I can get back to it later.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Who would do that?! I dry my hands properly before touching my books, and if I have a book out in the rain it's because I was outside with a book and it suddenly started raining before I could protect the book.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Well, on my bookcase bookshelves they're lined up, but squeezed in pretty tight. On my DVD case they're lined up neatly, but not squeezed in. In my old VHS case I am still working on it. some are stacked, some are lined up neatly, but it beats leaving them in a box in the garage. Once I have my room clean and all my books in my room, I'm going to have to go through and reorganize. Only small books can fit into the VHS case, so that is mass market paperbacks only, and I can only use one shelf of my DVD case for books because the bottom shelf is the only one that can hold that much weight. My bookcase is unfortunately small, so the bulk of my books will be double-stacked on that.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I prefer paperbacks in general, so if I have a hardback there is likely a reason behind it. First edition US Harry Potter books get babied, as do all my OLD hardback books. Paperback books I do my best to take care of so they last a while.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Depends on the book. My favorite books usually get beat up the most because I read them so often, but they'll always be stored nicely, at least.

Tara (tbm126) 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
Never. I subconsciously ensure that my books remain in perfect condition, never leaving a single mark on the spine. Because of this, my friends are petrified to borrow my books. Even when they return the books in visibly perfect condition, I can feel the difference when I open the book.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use bookmarks ALWAYS. Most of my bookmarks are paper (when I was younger I enjoyed designing my own bookmarks).

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I am physically incapable of writing in my books. In school, I always copy the page number and quote the passage in my notebook when I am instructed to highlight. The book was good enough to get published; I shouldn't add anything to it.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I always treat my books with care. I had to start figuring out better ways to pack them in backpacks so that their covers wouldn't get bent or pages dog-eared when I carried them around.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Never. I'd rather lose my place.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
No. Additionally, my hands have to be clean when I read my books (so sometimes I have to wash and dry my hands).

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Before I moved, they were lined up by height. Right now they're in piles around the house, but I'm going to stack them by height and then alphabetically as soon as I get new bookshelves.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Yes. Paperbacks of my favorite novels are always my "reading copies." With time, the spine may bend or leave marks, and that's okay. The hardcovers are always kept in mint condition, regardless of the situation.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Over time, my books may show wear (especially if they are paperback versions of my favorite novels) but they are always meticulously cared for. I'm not sure what the aforementioned equivalent of that would be. They're an obsessive collection.

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I'm quite careful with them, especially mass market spines.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Almost always. Usually paper or some sort of ribbon.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I've carried over my school habits into a lot of my books and I do tend to write in them but I only use a highlighter if I'm doing research.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

My books are my babies! They are very well taken care of.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Occasionally

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I definitely bathe with my books.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Very organzied on a bookshelf.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I'm a bit harder on hard covers because they're tougher.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

They are cherished!

Angela | 21 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I try to be careful but I will crack the spine enough so that it's easy to read the book.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I never, ever dog-ear anything. That drives me crazy. I have bookmarks but I prefer to use some kind of paper - receipt from buying the book, receipt from the library, post card, etc. Right now I'm using an index card which I've used to write down lines I liked.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
Never. I never even wrote in my text books.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Yes, I toss them around sometimes. Oops.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
My book is face down on my bed right now haha.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
No.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
I have books on a shelf, but the books I'm currently reading or planning to read are either on my desk, nightstand or on the floor next to my bed in a pile.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Yes, I am more careful with hardcovers.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Even though I toss them around, my books are in pretty great condition. Even the books I've had since I was a child are in good condition.

Suzanne (thisoilfieldwife) | 134 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? Generally, I try to be careful with the spines, although the ones that I read over and over again tend to get some creases in them, as do the thicker books. Not because I crease them, but mainly because it just happens to them.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? Sometimes. I try to, anyway. Although now that I read on my Nook I do not have as many as I once did. I have handed them down to my kids. I usually use the paper ones, if I use one, although I do have a metal one around here somewhere. I usually just use whatever is handy when I start reading a book to mark my spot, a loose piece of paper or a receipt. I even have a Christmas card I am using in one of them right now.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I don't normally write in them, although sometimes I will make a note of something in it on occasion. I usually use a pen as we don't have many pencils laying around. And I love to get a secondhand book and see what someone else has written in it. Sometimes give me more insight into what I am reading.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? My books are everywhere. Once my bookshelves got filled up, I started filling up the various entertainment centers around the house, and the top of my nightstand, and in the floor by my bed. And they go with me in my purse if I know I a going to get a chance to read while I am out and about.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Nope. I will either put something in it to hold my spot, or I will try and remember the page number.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? No water around my books, unless it is in a glass that I am drinking out of beside me.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? They are lined up on bookshelves, stacked in cabinets in the entertainment centers, stacked on my nightstand, and stacked up beside my bed.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? If I have a hardback, which is rare because I prefer the paperbacks, I usually take off the dust jacket to read it, and I am usually a little bit rougher with the hardbacks.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? They are mostly well loved, although there are some that seem to have been never read (usually first editions or signed editions).

1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I always try to be extremely careful with the spines of my books, unless they are already used. If it's one that has had it's back cracked already, I am not as conscious of how I hold it. There are some very thick novels that I can't help but crack when I read them, such as Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" books. It's just impossible to read the words closest to the spine until you open it just a little farther...and usually that results in a crack.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I always use a bookmark. Dog-earing pages is a big no-no for me. My bookmarks vary, and I have built up quite a little collection of funky ones. If I start a book and no bookmark is handy, I will grab anything to mark my spot until I can put a proper one in.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I do not write in my novels beyond putting my name in the cover of the ones I will keep. My other books though, like poetry collections, I will mark up no problem. Only in pencil, and as small a writing as I can manage.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I am very respectful of my books. I always try to be careful with them, and treat them well so that I can pass them on to others without having them look awful. I always make sure I don't bend the corners on the cover, and that no food or beverage leaves marks on them.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

I only do this if I will be back in less than five minutes.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I do read my books in the bath, but I am extremely careful not to get them wet in any way, shape, or form. I do not use wet hands to even move books away from the bath. I dry my hands first. As to reading out in the rain, if I am caught in a rain shower and have a book in my hand, I put the book under my coat/sweater so it doesn't get wet, and hurry to a dry place if I wish to continue reading.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Lined up on a bookshelf, by genre, and alphabetical within that genre. I am usually very careful not to cram my books so tight the covers bend. I like to have a little wiggle room for them.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

No. I treat them both with the respect I mentioned above.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Out of the two options, I would have to say that definitely my books are treated like the treasured photo album.

Dawn | 547 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I'm careful unless they're cracked already, or if it's a particularly long book I have to crack the spine so I can read the words closest it.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I use paper bookmarks faithfully. When I was little I dog-eared but that stopped when I was around 11/12.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? The only books I've ever written in/used a highlighter in were textbooks or poetry collections for school.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? I toss them into bags/purses but never on the floor.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Yes, but only if I'm returning to the book in a few minutes.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? Never. If I have a book with me outside and it's raining, I hide it under my jacket so it won't get wet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? My books are sorted by genre but I have a serious space problem so a ton of them are stacked on my desk and vanity/dresser. I'm hoping to buy a proper bookcase this winter and organize my books both by genre and alphabetically.

Used, appreciated, and reasonably well cared for.

CassieCruel 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I try not to, but if they are second hand and the spine is already cracked, I'm not usually too worried

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Never, never, never dog ear!!! I don't use metal bookmarks as they usually fall out, But generally I grab anything I can, receipts, business cards, invoices

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

Never write in books, used to put my name in all mine as a kid.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Depending on if new, and if the other half gets his mitts on them.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

I try not to, but if my bookmark is missing and it's just a bathroom break, possibly

NO NON ON ONONONONON NONO NNOOOOOOOO

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Due to moving, they are everywhere!!

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Sometimes you have no choice, between publishers or a good deal

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Some are battered, covers creased from being taken everywhere, spine cracked from re-reads
